Verdict: The 14-inch MacBook Pro with the standard M5 chip is an excellent performance laptop for sustained creative work, development, HDR media, and buyers who need HDMI and an SDXC card slot. It is a meaningful upgrade from Intel and early M-series Macs, but a relatively modest step up from the M4 MacBook Pro. For everyday school, office, and browsing tasks, the M5 MacBook Air is likely better value.
This review covers the 14-inch MacBook Pro with Apple’s base M5 chip—not the separate 14-inch and 16-inch models equipped with M5 Pro or M5 Max.
What is the M5 MacBook Pro?
“M5 MacBook Pro” usually refers to the 14-inch MacBook Pro introduced in October 2025 with Apple’s standard M5 processor. The base M5 chip is not offered in a 16-inch MacBook Pro. In the United States, Apple’s store selector showed a starting price of $1,699 during the August 18, 2026 research pass. Apple originally launched the model at $1,599 in October 2025. Prices and configurations vary by country and can change.
Design and everyday usability
The M5 MacBook Pro retains Apple’s squared-off aluminum chassis, excellent haptic trackpad, comfortable backlit keyboard, and Touch ID fingerprint reader. It is available in silver or Space Black. The 14-inch model weighs about 3.4 pounds, making it portable, although the MacBook Air remains the lighter and quieter choice.
The six-speaker system and 12MP Center Stage camera are strong everyday features. The camera can keep you centered during supported video calls, while the speakers deliver unusually full sound for a laptop. There is still no touchscreen or Face ID, and the display retains a camera notch.
The unchanged design is not necessarily a weakness: the chassis is sturdy and functional. However, buyers expecting a major visual or connectivity overhaul will not find one here.
Display: the strongest reason to choose the Pro
The 14.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR screen is one of the laptop’s biggest advantages over the MacBook Air. It combines deep contrast, wide P3 color, support for one billion colors, smooth 120Hz ProMotion, and high HDR brightness. Apple specifies 1,000 nits sustained XDR brightness, 1,600 nits peak HDR brightness, and up to 1,000 nits SDR brightness outdoors.
In Tom’s Guide’s testing, the panel reached 115% of the sRGB gamut, 81.7% of DCI-P3, and 1,109 nits HDR brightness. Results depend on test equipment and methodology, but the display is well suited to photography, HDR video, design, and general media use.
A nano-texture finish is available as an option and is most useful in bright offices, studios, or locations with troublesome reflections. It is not automatically better for everyone, adds cost, and calls for more careful cleaning. The screen is not touch-enabled, and the 14-inch workspace may feel cramped for video timelines, large spreadsheets, or several code windows. Those users may prefer a 16-inch model or an external monitor.

The M5 brings a 10-core CPU, a 10-core GPU with a Neural Accelerator in each GPU core, and a 16-core Neural Engine. It also provides 153GB/s of memory bandwidth. The practical gains are most apparent in GPU-accelerated applications, exports, compilation, video encoding, graphics work, local AI, and other demanding tasks. Web browsing and office applications are already extremely fast on M4, so the difference there is less dramatic.

Apple’s performance claims
Apple says the M5 delivers up to 20% faster multithreaded CPU performance, up to 1.6× faster graphics performance, up to 1.6× higher gaming frame rates, up to 2× faster SSD performance, and up to 3.5× faster AI performance than M4 in specified workloads. These are Apple’s internal, workload-specific “up to” figures—not universal improvements in every application.
Independent benchmark results
Tom’s Guide tested a 32GB/1TB M5 MacBook Pro, so its results should not be treated as identical to every retail configuration:
| Test | M5 MacBook Pro | M4 MacBook Pro | Dell 14 Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Geekbench 6 single-core | 4,288 | 3,807 | 2,701 |
| Geekbench 6 multi-core | 17,986 | 15,114 | 15,794 |
| HandBrake conversion | 3:31 | 4:27 | 5:06 |
| Shadow of the Tomb Raider | 57 fps at 1200p | About 36 fps | Not directly comparable |
Macworld reported approximately 14% higher Geekbench single-core performance, 22% higher multi-core performance, and nearly 50% better Cinebench GPU performance than M4 in its testing. The gains are considerably more compelling over Intel and earlier M-series systems than over a capable M4 MacBook Pro.
The active cooling system is also important. Unlike the fanless MacBook Air, the Pro is designed for longer demanding workloads such as video exports, rendering, and large builds. That makes it a better sustained-performance platform, although the exact advantage depends on the application and configuration.
AI and local machine-learning work
The M5’s Neural Engine and GPU Neural Accelerators improve the hardware foundation for on-device image generation, video enhancement, transcription, and other machine-learning workloads. That does not automatically make the Pro the right AI laptop.
For cloud-based chatbots and ordinary Apple Intelligence features, the base M5 is already more than adequate. Local AI users should instead ask which models their software supports and how much memory they need. Virtual machines, containers, local large language models, image-generation models, and AI video tools can become memory-constrained. Serious local AI users may be better served by an M5 Pro or M5 Max with greater memory bandwidth and higher memory ceilings.
Ports and external displays
The built-in connectivity is a major advantage over the Air. You get three Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports, MagSafe 3 charging, HDMI, an SDXC card slot, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Photographers can import from a card, presenters can connect HDMI, and desk users can charge without occupying a USB-C port.
The base M5 supports up to two external displays in supported combinations, including two displays up to 6K at 60Hz or 4K at 144Hz. It can also support one display up to 8K at 60Hz, 5K at 120Hz, or 4K at 240Hz, with the built-in display remaining active. Check Apple’s display-support specifications for the exact connection arrangement.

The important limitation is that the base M5 uses Thunderbolt 4 at up to 40Gb/s. M5 Pro and M5 Max models use Thunderbolt 5 at up to 120Gb/s. That difference matters for high-speed external storage arrays, demanding docks, capture hardware, professional expansion cards, and complex multi-display setups. It is also relevant when choosing an external SSD: a Thunderbolt 5 drive cannot deliver its platform advantage through the base M5’s Thunderbolt 4 ports.
The base model also uses Wi-Fi 6E rather than Wi-Fi 7. Wi-Fi 6E remains sufficient for many users; Wi-Fi 7 matters mainly when you have compatible networking equipment and a workload that benefits from its higher throughput or lower latency.
Battery life and charging
Apple rates the 72.4Wh battery for up to 24 hours of video streaming or up to 16 hours of wireless web use. The 24-hour figure is a manufacturer estimate from a specified video-streaming test, not a guarantee of mixed interactive use.
Recommended Free Tools
Tom’s Guide measured approximately 18 hours and 14 minutes in a continuous Wi-Fi browsing test at 150 nits. Its M4 test unit lasted about 18 hours and 31 minutes under the same test, so the M5 is not automatically longer-lasting in every workload. The results are still excellent for a performance-oriented laptop, but brightness, applications, wireless conditions, and workload will change real-world endurance.
The included adapter is 70W. Fast charging requires a 96W-or-higher USB-PD power source, which is worth knowing if quick top-ups matter to your travel or desk setup.
Memory and storage: choose carefully
Unified memory is shared by the CPU and GPU and cannot be upgraded after purchase. Storage can be expanded externally, but internal memory cannot. That makes the RAM decision more consequential than the SSD decision.
- 16GB: Suitable for browsing, office work, school, light coding, and casual photo editing.
- 24GB: The sensible middle ground for long ownership, development tools, Lightroom, moderate video work, and heavy multitasking.
- 32GB: Preferable for professional photo and video work, containers, virtual machines, large software projects, local AI, or keeping the laptop for many years.
The current lineup starts at 1TB and offers 2TB and 4TB options. Choose 1TB for office work, development, cloud-first workflows, and moderate photo libraries; 2TB is more comfortable for photographers, musicians, and developers with large toolchains; 4TB is mainly for users who need a large internal media workspace.
An external SSD is usually a more economical way to add capacity, particularly for archives and completed projects. The trade-offs are extra cables, portability friction, heat, and the base model’s Thunderbolt 4 bandwidth ceiling.

M5 MacBook Pro versus M5 MacBook Air
Choose the M5 MacBook Air when your work is mainly browsing, writing, schoolwork, office applications, and video calls. It is the better fit if low weight, silent operation, and price matter more than HDR quality, HDMI, SDXC, and sustained cooling.
Choose the M5 MacBook Pro when you need its brighter XDR display, built-in ports, active cooling, or longer sustained performance. Photographers and presenters benefit from the SDXC slot and HDMI; editors and developers benefit from the performance platform and display. Do not buy the Pro simply because it is faster on paper if your applications rarely use that extra capability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.M5 MacBook Pro versus M4 MacBook Pro
The M5 is faster, with the largest practical advantages appearing in graphics-heavy applications, SSD-intensive work, AI workloads, and some multithreaded tasks. It also starts with more storage in the current lineup.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor an M4 owner who mainly browses, writes, edits documents, or uses ordinary creative applications, the upgrade is usually difficult to justify. An M5 upgrade makes more sense if you regularly export video, compile large projects, use GPU-accelerated software, run local AI workloads, or need additional storage. Owners of Intel or early M1 systems are likely to see a much more noticeable overall improvement in speed, battery life, camera quality, and software longevity.
When should you choose M5 Pro or M5 Max?
The M5 Pro is the more logical choice when you need Thunderbolt 5, higher memory bandwidth, more demanding external-display support, large external storage arrays, or more than 32GB of unified memory. Apple’s March 2026 announcement listed the 14-inch M5 Pro from $2,199 and the 16-inch model from $2,699 in the United States, subject to current pricing and configuration changes.
M5 Max is aimed at intensive 3D rendering, complex multi-stream or high-resolution video, large local AI models, and workloads where the time saved directly supports professional revenue. Apple listed M5 Max configurations from $3,599 for 14-inch and $3,899 for 16-inch models in the United States. For general productivity, the premium is difficult to justify.
Which configuration should you buy?
Minimum sensible configuration
The 16GB/1TB model is adequate for office work, school, browsing, light development, and moderate creative use. It is the entry point, not the best choice for every long-term professional workload.
Best-value configuration for many buyers
Choose 24GB memory and 1TB storage if you want a comfortable general-purpose machine for several years, use development tools, edit photos, multitask heavily, or occasionally edit video. Add storage externally if your projects do not need to remain on the internal drive.

Professional configuration
Choose 32GB memory for professional photo and video work, containers, virtual machines, large codebases, and local AI. Select 2TB if active projects and media need to stay internal. Choose 4TB only when the convenience is worth the substantial premium.
When to skip the base M5
Move to M5 Pro if your workflow depends on Thunderbolt 5, high-bandwidth storage, multiple high-resolution displays, more memory headroom, or consistently heavy rendering and compilation. The base M5 can be an awkward middle ground: more expensive than the Air but less expandable than the higher-tier Pro models.
Buying extras
An external SSD is the most useful accessory for users who need more capacity without paying Apple’s internal-storage upgrade prices. Compare Thunderbolt and USB 3 performance, sustained write speeds, heat management, warranty, and portability.

Final verdict
The base M5 MacBook Pro is a refined, high-quality 14-inch laptop rather than a revolutionary redesign. Its excellent XDR display, useful ports, active cooling, long battery life, and stronger GPU make it a compelling purchase for demanding users and a substantial upgrade from Intel or early M-series Macs.
It is not the automatic choice for everyone. M4 owners should upgrade only for a specific performance, storage, or AI need. General users should compare the lower-cost M5 Air first. Buyers who need Thunderbolt 5, substantially more memory, or maximum graphics performance should skip the base chip and choose M5 Pro or M5 Max.
