Choose LUNA if you want a focused, console-inspired recording workflow—especially if you own a Universal Audio Apollo interface and want to track through UAD processing. Choose REAPER if you need broad platform support, deep routing, customization, scripting, or a low-cost DAW for music, post-production, video, and sound design. LUNA is free to start; REAPER offers a full 60-day evaluation before its paid license. Neither is a universal winner: they prioritize different ways of working.

What are LUNA and REAPER?
LUNA is Universal Audio’s DAW for recording, editing, producing, mixing, and mastering. Its identity is shaped by an analog-studio-inspired approach: a console-style presentation, tape and summing concepts, and close access to Universal Audio processing. That describes a workflow and a set of sound-shaping tools; it is not evidence that a LUNA session automatically sounds better than one made in another DAW.
REAPER is a full audio production application for recording, editing, mixing, mastering, MIDI, video, and more. Its distinguishing strength is adaptability: users can shape routing, actions, shortcuts, layouts, scripts, and project templates around the job. That breadth can make it less guided at first, but the advanced options are not required for basic recording.

Price, editions, and licensing
LUNA Free costs $0 and provides the core DAW, but it is not identical to LUNA Pro. Pro adds paid features and processing; Universal Audio lists Hardware Inserts among its Pro-only features. See the vendor’s LUNA Free and Pro feature FAQ before deciding whether the upgrade matters to your setup. The current Pro checkout price was not verified here, so consult the live product page rather than relying on older launch pricing.
REAPER is not permanently free. Its official purchase page offers a 60-day fully functional evaluation, followed by a $60 discounted license or a $225 commercial license in the US, before taxes. The discounted license applies to personal, educational, or nonprofit use and to an individual or business whose yearly gross revenue does not exceed $20,000. A new REAPER 7 license includes upgrades through version 8.99. One license may be installed on multiple computers, but used on only one at a time. Confirm the terms and current prices on the REAPER purchase page.
For the DAW alone, LUNA Free is the cheapest way to start and REAPER has a low, clearly stated paid price. The total cost depends on the work you want to do: LUNA Pro, UAD plug-ins, extensions, or Apollo hardware can add expense; REAPER users may choose to buy third-party instruments and effects. Apollo is not required to run LUNA, and buying it solely to try the DAW is not necessary.

Workflow and learning curve
LUNA is likely to feel more direct if your main task is recording and mixing music. Its console-inspired design and integrated production assumptions make some decisions readily visible instead of asking you to build every part of a workflow yourself. That does not make it effortless for everyone: setup involves Universal Audio accounts and software, and users may need to learn how LUNA’s extensions, hardware features, and edition tiers fit together.
REAPER can record and edit without elaborate configuration, but its flexibility means there are more choices to encounter. Folders, sends and receives, track channels, actions, templates, and plug-in settings can all be useful; they can also feel like a lot when you simply want to record a song. Start with a basic template and change it only when a real need arises. The official REAPER user guide can help new users build a setup without treating every advanced feature as a prerequisite.
The practical trade-off is guided workflow versus control, not beginner software versus expert software. LUNA may reduce setup decisions for a conventional recording session. REAPER lets you tailor more of the application, at the cost of deciding how you want it to work.

Apollo tracking and latency: LUNA’s main differentiator
If you own an Apollo, LUNA has a strong case. Universal Audio describes an integrated workflow that connects the DAW to Apollo routing and realtime UAD processing; its documentation cites sub-2 ms latency through Accelerated Realtime Monitoring in supported Apollo workflows. That advantage comes from the LUNA–Apollo–UAD combination, not from a general rule that LUNA is lower-latency than REAPER on any computer or interface. In either DAW, the result depends on the interface and driver, buffer size, sample rate, plug-in delay, CPU load, monitoring path, and whether processing runs on the interface or in the computer. A single latency figure cannot be promised across different rigs. If tracking through effects is central to your work, compare the exact interface, drivers, and monitoring chain you intend to use.
Interfaces, setup, and operating-system support
LUNA does not require UA hardware: Universal Audio says it can work with compatible interfaces using Core Audio on Mac or ASIO on Windows. But “works without Apollo” does not mean “has the same Apollo-integrated experience.” LUNA’s published system requirements list macOS Big Sur 11 through macOS Tahoe 26 and 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11; they do not list Linux. REAPER is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The official download page listed version 7.78, released July 18, 2026, when these details were checked. It supports common audio systems including ASIO on Windows, Core Audio on macOS, and ALSA, JACK, and PulseAudio on Linux. Linux is the clear choice between these two DAWs if you need a natively supported operating system, but it does not guarantee that every Windows or macOS plug-in will run there.

REAPER has the edge in host flexibility. Its documented plug-in formats include VST, VST3, LV2, CLAP, and JSFX, alongside DX on Windows and AU on macOS. It also offers extensive routing, plug-in delay compensation, sidechains, and scripting. This suits users with a diverse plug-in collection, specialized routing needs, or custom tools. Format support is not a promise that every third-party product will work: check the plug-in maker’s operating-system, architecture, and authorization requirements.

LUNA is more closely tied to Universal Audio’s processing ecosystem, but it is not limited to Apollo users or to tracking audio. It supports AU plug-ins on Mac and UAD plug-ins, and its current feature set includes ARA-based tools such as Melodyne, WaveLab Go, SpectraLayers Go, and VoiceAssist Basic in relevant LUNA Pro workflows. Availability can depend on the edition and the tool. Do not assume that a sound or effect bundled with LUNA Pro is automatically licensed for use in another DAW; check that product’s own terms.

For instruments, LUNA includes the free Shape toolkit and offers instruments including Opal, PolyMAX, Ravel Grand Piano, ARP MIDI Arpeggiator, and ChordAXE Lite. That can cover songwriting and many conventional MIDI tasks. REAPER is the stronger fit for users who need to customize elaborate MIDI systems: its official feature listing describes up to 128 MIDI buses and 128 individually routable audio channels per track. These capabilities are useful for large instrument templates, hybrid hardware setups, or experimental routing, but are not necessary for a typical keyboard part.
Editing, comping, and mixing
Both DAWs support music editing and mixing, but choose by testing the task that matters to you rather than by relying on broad labels such as “better comping.” REAPER documents multiple takes, comping, media-item editing, regions, non-destructive editing, and extensive automation. LUNA also provides modern editing tools, including ARA-based workflows in current releases. If you routinely comp vocals, edit multitrack drums, or depend on a particular pitch-correction workflow, try that exact process in each DAW before committing. Session organization and editing habits often matter more than a feature list.
LUNA’s mixing appeal is its focused, console-style workflow and access to analog-inspired processing. That may help an engineer move quickly through familiar recording and mixing decisions. REAPER is better suited to building large or unusual mix systems: nested folders, flexible sends and receives, multichannel tracks, sidechains, automation, custom actions, and batch rendering can support complex templates, stem delivery, or parallel processing. More options do not automatically mean a better mix; they mean more control over how the work is organized.

REAPER has the clearer documented advantage for video and broader post-production use. Its official feature pages describe video import, editing, processing, and rendering, along with batch rendering, loudness reporting, scripting, and extensive multichannel routing. Those features make it a natural candidate for sound design, broadcast, game audio, and sound-for-picture workflows. LUNA is positioned primarily around music creation, recording, editing, mixing, and mastering; do not choose it as a substitute for a dedicated post workflow without checking the specific requirements.
Which should you choose?
Choose LUNA if…
- You own an Apollo and want its integrated realtime UAD tracking and monitoring workflow.
- You mainly record, write, produce, and mix music, and prefer a focused, console-inspired environment.
- You want to try a free DAW before paying for additional features or gear.
- You value a curated production workflow more than extensive customization.
Choose REAPER if…
- You need Linux support, deep routing, extensive multichannel control, or custom scripts and actions.
- You work in video, post-production, game audio, broadcast, or sound design as well as music.
- You want broad plug-in format support and the freedom to assemble your own instrument and effects collection.
- You want a low-cost license with stated pricing and an upgrade entitlement through version 8.99 for new REAPER 7 licenses.
Consider both if your work splits between them
You can use REAPER for post, complex editing, or custom routing and LUNA for Apollo-centered tracking or music production. Moving a project between DAWs usually means exporting stems, MIDI, or other interchange data rather than opening the native session directly. Check that tempo maps, automation, plug-ins, routing, and edits survive the transfer; rendered stems preserve audio but not the original mix controls.
How to decide without overspending
- Start with your interface. If you already own Apollo, test LUNA’s integrated tracking workflow. If you use another interface, try LUNA Free with it rather than assuming you need new hardware.
- Test a real session. Record a few tracks, monitor with your usual effects, edit a take, build a basic mix, and export stems. For REAPER, start with a simple template; for LUNA, confirm which features require Pro.
- Check your operating system and plug-ins. Linux rules out LUNA according to its published requirements. For either DAW, verify that essential instruments and effects are supported on your system.
- Compare total setup cost. Include any needed interface, paid edition, plug-ins, or instruments—not only the DAW license.
- Buy only after the workflow fits. LUNA Free and REAPER’s unrestricted 60-day evaluation let you test before paying.
