A hosted copy is also not automatically an authorized copy. Scribd availability confirms that a document is posted there; it does not by itself prove that every included work may legally be redistributed.

Is it an official Lock Cowboy publication?

Do not assume that:
- “Merged” means revised, corrected, or professionally edited;

Those fundamentals remain relevant to locksport practice. The document may also help a newcomer decide whether the hobby is interesting before buying equipment.
The transparent-lock emphasis has one advantage: it makes the internal mechanism visible. But that is also its limitation. A clear demonstration lock is an educational model, not a representative sample of every residential, commercial, automotive, high-security, or electronic lock.
What is outdated or uncertain?
The MIT section is explicitly tied to 1991. Its mechanical explanations can remain valuable, but readers should not treat a decades-old guide as current authority on:
- Modern pick and tension-tool designs;
- Materials, lock construction, and security features;
- High-security or restricted-keyway cylinders;

For a more current structured reference, Locksport from No Starch Press was published in January 2024 and covers lock operation, maintenance, security differences, laws, competitions, communities, and multiple lock types. It is broader and more current, although it is still not a substitute for local legal advice or formal locksmith training.
Is using lockpicking material legal?
There is no single answer for every reader. Rules differ by country, state, and circumstance. Possessing tools, carrying them, importing them, using them with criminal intent, and performing professional locksmith work may be treated differently.
The PDF’s warning to practice only on owned or authorized locks is a sound baseline, but it is not legal advice. Before buying, carrying, transporting, or using tools, check the laws where you live. In the United States, relevant sources may include your state statutes, attorney general, licensing authority, or a qualified local attorney. International readers should consult the appropriate local authority.
The safest practice rule is simple: use only locks you own or for which you have explicit permission, and keep training separate from any attempt to gain access to property.

Is the Scribd copy safe and legitimate to download?
Its safety and licensing cannot be guaranteed from the title alone. A third-party upload may be incomplete, poorly scanned, modified, or surrounded by unreliable advertisements and links. Any downloaded file also carries the ordinary risks associated with files from unknown sources.
Copyright status is a separate issue. Online availability does not place the MIT Guide or the beginner material in the public domain. Prefer an original author or publisher, a clearly licensed copy, or a legitimate commercial edition.
