If Live Captions is not showing on your iPhone, first check that your device is an iPhone 11 or later, turn on Settings → Accessibility → Live Captions, then choose the right source: iPhone Audio for sound playing on the phone or Microphone for nearby speech. The floating window may also be collapsed or hidden when no audio is detected. Live Captions availability varies by language, country, and region.
Start with a two-minute check
- Open Settings → Accessibility → Live Captions and turn on Live Captions.
- Play a video or podcast with clear spoken dialogue. Open the Live Captions control and select iPhone Audio.
- For an in-person conversation, select Microphone instead and ask someone to speak clearly near the iPhone.
- If you still cannot see the window, look for a collapsed Live Captions control and tap it. The window can hide when no audio is detected.
- If neither test works, check compatibility and language or regional availability before trying app, microphone, or software fixes.
These tests separate a missing or hidden window from a visible window that is not transcribing. Apple documents the setup, source controls, and window behavior in its iPhone Live Captions guide.

Identify what is going wrong
- No Live Captions setting: Check the iPhone model and Apple’s language, country, and region availability.
- No floating window: Make sure the feature is on, start speech, and restore the collapsed window if it was hidden.
- Window appears but stays blank: Select the correct source, then test clear speech from another source.
- Works in one app but not another: The issue may be limited to that app or its audio, rather than Live Captions overall.
- Words appear but are wrong or incomplete: Background noise, overlapping voices, low volume, accents, and poor input can affect results. Apple says accuracy varies.
1. Confirm your iPhone is eligible
Apple lists Live Captions as available on iPhone 11 and later. To check your model, go to Settings → General → About. A phone that can install iOS 26 is not necessarily eligible for every feature in that release; check the Live Captions device requirement specifically.

Its current iOS 26 feature-availability page lists supported combinations, including English in Australia, Canada, India, Singapore, the UK, and the US; French in Canada and France; German; Japanese; Korean; Spanish in Mexico, Spain, and the US; and specified Cantonese and Mandarin variants. Confirm the current listing for your location and language rather than relying on an old language list. A missing setting may reflect availability, not a fault you can fix by moving a toggle.

2. Enable Live Captions and choose the input
Go to Settings → Accessibility → Live Captions and turn on Live Captions. Then choose the source that matches what you want transcribed:
- iPhone Audio: Audio playing from the phone, such as a video, podcast, or FaceTime audio.
- Microphone: Nearby speech or other sound picked up around the phone.
Turning the feature on does not by itself guarantee that it is listening to the source you have in mind. If the wrong source is selected, the window can remain blank. Microphone troubleshooting is relevant to nearby-speech mode; it is not a universal fix for captions from internal iPhone audio.
3. Restore or reposition a hidden caption window
The floating window may be out of sight rather than broken. Apple says it can automatically hide when no audio is detected, and a swipe left or right on the window hides it. Start clear spoken audio, look for the collapsed Live Captions control, and tap it to restore the window. If it is visible but difficult to find, drag it toward the middle of the screen. The window can also be minimized or expanded.

4. Test another spoken-audio source
Try a different video, podcast, or other source with unmistakable speech, turn up media volume enough to hear it, then select iPhone Audio and wait several seconds. For nearby speech, select Microphone and ask someone to speak clearly close to the phone. A controlled test is more useful than changing unrelated settings.
Use the results to choose the next step:
- Microphone works, iPhone Audio does not: Check the playback app, source selection, and audio routing. Test another app before concluding there is a system-wide fault.
- iPhone Audio works, Microphone does not: Test the microphone, check for an obstruction, and review relevant app permissions.
- Both work in some places but not others: Focus on the affected app or media. App-provided captions and Live Captions are separate systems.
- Neither works anywhere: Recheck eligibility and availability, restart the iPhone, install available updates, and test again.
5. If Microphone mode fails, check microphone input
First determine whether the phone can record intelligible speech. Open Voice Memos, record a short clip while speaking near the bottom of the iPhone, and play it back. You can also record a short video with each camera and listen for clear speech.
If recordings are muffled, remove a case or screen protector that may cover a microphone opening and carefully clear visible debris. Apple’s microphone troubleshooting guidance covers obstruction checks and testing. If an app that needs microphone input is involved, check Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone and confirm that app has permission. Permission checks are relevant to microphone-based input and app capture, not a general explanation for missing captions from every kind of iPhone audio.

If Voice Memos and camera recordings are also unclear after checking for obstructions, contact Apple Support about possible hardware service rather than continuing to change caption settings.

6. If only one app fails
Test Live Captions in another app first. If it works elsewhere:
- Force-close and reopen the affected app.
- Check the App Store for an update.
- Try another video or audio source in that app, if available.
- If the problem continues, contact the app’s developer.
Apple’s app troubleshooting guidance also suggests restarting the iPhone and checking for updates. Deleting and reinstalling an app can be an isolation step, but it is not a guaranteed Live Captions fix and may remove locally stored app data.

7. Restart and update iOS
After checking the setting, source, and availability, restart the iPhone. Turn Live Captions back on if needed, then test both iPhone Audio and Microphone. Install any update offered for your device at Settings → General → Software Update. Apple’s iOS 26 update page records successive releases; use Software Update to see what is currently available to your iPhone rather than relying on a version number that can become outdated.
There is no basis here to treat all missing Live Captions reports as a confirmed iOS 26 bug. If the issue began after an update, note that timing, but still check both inputs and test another app before drawing that conclusion.

Live Captions transcribes speech in real time from iPhone audio or the microphone. Subtitles or closed captions are caption tracks supplied by a video, streaming service, or app. A video may have no subtitle track and still be a suitable Live Captions test; an app’s own captions can also work or fail independently of Apple’s system feature. If one video has no captions, try another spoken-audio source before concluding Live Captions is broken.

Calls, retention, and privacy
Apple provides a Keep Call Captions option. With 1 Minute, call captions are cleared after the call, and copying, screenshots, and screen recording of the call transcription are unavailable. With 1 Hour, captions remain for up to an hour and can be copied, screenshotted, or screen-recorded. Apple says selecting the one-hour option causes all participants to hear a brief announcement that the call is being transcribed. Changing the setting during a call or pausing transcription triggers an announcement that transcription has stopped.
This retention setting does not explain a completely missing Live Captions window, but it matters if you use captions on calls. Treat saved transcriptions and captures as potentially sensitive, and do not assume Live Captions is a legally sufficient substitute for an official transcript.
When to contact Apple
Contact Apple Support if the Live Captions control is missing despite an eligible iPhone and supported availability, or if both input modes fail across multiple apps after you have checked the settings, restarted, and installed available updates. Have your iPhone model, iOS version, language and region, affected apps, and results of the two input tests ready. If microphone recordings are also unclear, mention that specifically; it points to an input problem that caption-setting changes may not resolve.
