The Linux Foundation’s LF Live session “Rust for Linux: Writing Safe Abstractions & Drivers” is a free, recorded webinar led by Rust for Linux maintainer Miguel Ojeda. It shows how Rust fits into the existing Linux kernel, from enabling Rust in a kernel build to creating C bindings, wrapping them in a safe abstraction, and using that abstraction from a Rust module without writing unsafe code in the module itself.
What the LF Live session covers
The session took place on November 11, 2021, as part of the Linux Foundation’s LF Live Mentorship Series. LF Live was created to connect learners and prospective open-source contributors with maintainers and community leaders through free online sessions. The event page identifies Miguel Ojeda as both the mentor and a Rust for Linux maintainer, and lists a recording and slides.
This is a technical introduction to kernel development with Rust—not a general application-Rust course. The official recording description summarizes the project’s aim as: “Rust for Linux aims to bring a new system programming language into the kernel.” Rust is presented as an additional kernel language that works with the existing C codebase, not as a demand to rewrite Linux.
The workflow demonstrated in the recording
1. Enable Rust in a kernel build
The presentation starts with the kernel’s Rust infrastructure, compilation model and configuration. It then demonstrates setting up and building a kernel with Rust support enabled. The exact commands depend on the kernel tree and toolchain you use, so the recording is best treated as a walkthrough of the build process rather than a timeless copy-and-paste recipe.

The PCB-mounted screw-in stabilizer for “big keys” such as space bar, shift, enter, and delete are designed for less wobbliness and smooth performance
2. Add bindings to C-side kernel APIs
Rust code must interact with the kernel’s established C interfaces. The session shows how new bindings expose selected C functionality to Rust. These bindings form a low-level foreign-function interface (FFI); they are the point where Rust’s type and ownership rules meet APIs designed in C.
3. Wrap the bindings in an abstraction
The central teaching example is an abstraction that safely wraps those bindings. Its implementation is responsible for expressing the C API’s lifetime, ownership and validity rules in a Rust interface that callers can use correctly.

- Gasket Structure and PCB Single Key Slotting: This computer keyboard features a advanced structure, extended integrated silicone pad, and PCB single key slotting, better optimizes resilience and stability, making the hand feel softer and more elastic. Five layers of filling silencer fills the gap between the PCB, the positioning plate and the shaft, effectively counteracting the cavity noise sound of the shaft hitting the positioning plate, and providing a solid feel
- PBT Keycaps and 8000mAh Battery: 99 keys 96% layout compact keyboard can save more desktop space while keep necessary arrow keys and number area for games and work. The rechargeable keyboard built-in 8000mAh large capcacity battery to provide more power and longer battery life. Double shot PBT keycaps, made from two colors material molded into each others, make the keycaps characters maintain the vibrance and saturation, clear and not fade
4. Consume the abstraction from a Rust module
The final step is a Rust module that uses the new abstraction without unsafe code in the module itself. This separation is the practical safety model: carefully reviewed low-level code defines the boundary, while higher-level kernel code works through the safe API.
How “safe abstractions” divide responsibility
Rust does not make every kernel operation automatically safe. Interacting with raw pointers, device registers, reference-counted kernel objects or C callbacks can require unsafe implementation code. The goal is to keep that code localized and to document the assumptions it must uphold.

- Fluid Typing Experience: Laptop-like profile with spherically-dished keys shaped for your fingertips delivers a fast, fluid, precise and quieter typing experience
- Automate Repetitive Tasks: Easily create and share time-saving Smart Actions shortcuts to perform multiple actions with a single keystroke with the Logi Options+ app (1)
- Smarter Illumination: Backlit keyboard keys light up as your hands approach and adapt to the environment; Now with more lighting customizations on Logi Options+ (1)
- More Comfort, Deeper Focus: Work for longer with a solid build, low-profile design and an optimum keyboard angle that is better for your wrist posture
- Multi-Device, Multi OS Bluetooth Keyboard: Pair with up to 3 devices on nearly any operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux, Googlebook OS) via Bluetooth Low Energy or included Logi Bolt USB receiver (2)
- Bindings: expose the C-side operation to Rust and may carry low-level hazards.
- Abstraction: checks or encodes the operation’s invariants, ownership rules and lifetimes in a reusable interface.
- Consumer module: calls the abstraction through ordinary safe Rust, so each caller does not have to re-implement the same safety reasoning.
Documentation, testing and coding guidelines are therefore part of the engineering work, not optional polish. A wrapper is useful only when reviewers can understand its contract and tests can exercise the assumptions behind it.
Rust and C in kernel development
The companion slides present memory safety, compile-time productivity and performance comparable to C as motivations for adding Rust to kernel development. Those are design goals and language properties, not a performance benchmark from this webinar.

| Concern | Rust-oriented approach | How it relates to existing C code |
|---|---|---|
| Memory safety | Ownership, borrowing and type checking can prevent many classes of invalid memory use in safe code. | Unsafe FFI and kernel invariants still require explicit review; Rust does not remove those boundaries. |
| Compile-time feedback | The compiler checks types, lifetimes and ownership before a module is run. | These checks apply around interfaces that may originate in C. |
| API integration | Bindings expose selected C APIs to Rust. | Rust code can be added alongside the established kernel implementation. |
| Runtime performance | The slides cite performance comparable to C as a motivation. | The session does not publish a separate benchmark or universal speed claim. |
| Development workflow | Configure the build, create bindings, implement an abstraction, then write a consumer. | The workflow extends the kernel’s existing build and review practices rather than replacing them. |
Do you need Rust experience first?
The Linux Foundation’s recording description says no prerequisite Rust knowledge is required. The material introduces Rust in the context of kernel infrastructure and uses the abstraction example to explain why particular types and interfaces are chosen. Learners who already understand basic Linux kernel concepts or C APIs may recognize the examples faster, but the session is designed as an approachable entry point to Rust for Linux rather than an advanced Rust prerequisite.

- It is: a free Linux Foundation mentorship webinar with a recording and slides, focused on Rust support, bindings, safe wrappers, drivers and modules.
- It is not: a certification course, a promise of employment, or a statement that the Linux kernel is being rewritten in Rust.
- It is separate from: the continuing Rust for Linux project and the Linux Foundation Mentorship Program. The webinar explains concepts; it does not itself award a mentorship placement or stipend.
