Choose LetsVPN for a simple, provider-managed VPN on a phone or computer. Choose OpenVPN Access Server when you need to operate a VPN that gives authorized users controlled access to private networks. They are not equivalent products: LetsVPN is primarily a consumer VPN service, while Access Server is self-hosted business VPN software. Your choice determines who runs the gateway, who handles updates and outages, and whether the VPN protects internet browsing or connects people to your own infrastructure.

The key difference: a service versus server software

“LetsVPN” is an ambiguous brand name. This comparison refers to the LetsVPN app associated with Letsgo Network Incorporated in the U.S. App Store, alongside the consumer-focused English site at let-svpn.com/en/. Other sites using the name publish different prices and features, so verify the developer, domain and storefront before subscribing.

OpenVPN Access Server is a commercial control plane and VPN server that you install on Linux, a virtual machine, container, on-premises hardware or a cloud marketplace image. End users normally connect with the separate OpenVPN Connect application. The OpenVPN protocol, OpenVPN Connect client, Access Server and managed CloudConnexa service are different products.

LetsVPN privacy claims need careful reading

The U.S. App Store listing identifies LetsVPN and Letsgo Network Incorporated as seller. Its privacy information is developer-reported and Apple says it has not verified the disclosures (App Store listing). That is not proof of anonymity or of the absence of operational data. A VPN operator can potentially process account, connection, abuse-prevention, billing and diagnostic information even when it says it does not log browsing activity.

Multiple LetsVPN-branded domains also make materially different encryption, protocol and pricing claims. Attribute any WireGuard, OpenVPN-derived or “no logs” statement to the exact service and policy you are evaluating rather than to the brand name generally.

Common LetsVPN limitations

  • An exit IP can be blocked by a streaming, banking or other service.
  • Automatic selection may choose a distant or congested route.
  • Hotel, campus, workplace or mobile networks may block or degrade the connection.
  • App-store prices can differ from direct-web prices, and renewal terms may differ from introductory offers.
  • A VPN connection does not protect a compromised device or guarantee that every application uses the tunnel.

What Access Server requires

Access Server’s web administration interface simplifies configuration, but it does not remove infrastructure work. A normal deployment is:

  1. Provision a supported Linux host, VM, container, on-premises server or cloud image.
  2. Assign a stable public address or DNS name and open the required firewall ports.
  3. Install Access Server and protect the administrator account and management interface.
  4. Choose NAT or routed operation, define VPN networks and specify permitted private subnets.
  5. Configure authentication, MFA, groups and least-privilege IP or port rules.
  6. Distribute OpenVPN Connect profiles to Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS or Android users.
  7. Test internal DNS, return routes, split or full tunneling, revocation and offboarding.
  8. Implement patching, backups, monitoring, capacity planning and recovery testing.

Access Server documentation covers NAT, routing, point-to-site and site-to-site connectivity, split tunneling, granular access controls, clustering and failover (datasheet).

Where Access Server is the better fit

  • Remote employees need private IP ranges or internal applications.
  • Offices, clouds or data centers require site-to-site connectivity.
  • Existing LDAP, RADIUS, SAML, PAM or MFA systems must control access.
  • Administrators need user and group policies, device controls and auditability.
  • The organization needs on-premises, cloud-selected, offline or air-gapped deployment.

Self-hosting also transfers responsibility to you: host hardening, certificates, key rotation, updates, DNS, routing, logging, incident response and capacity. A single server remains a single point of failure. Clustering and load balancing are documented capabilities, but high availability requires multiple hosts, synchronized state, redundant networking, monitoring and tested failover.

Security, privacy and routing compared

Infrastructure trust

With LetsVPN, the provider operates the gateways and network path. With Access Server, your organization controls the server, identity systems, DNS and much of the logging, but cloud, ISP and endpoint providers may still generate records. Self-hosting reduces dependence on a consumer VPN operator; it does not automatically make a deployment private or secure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Authentication and policy

Access Server documents local authentication, PAM, RADIUS, LDAP, SAML, TOTP-based MFA and custom authentication, plus group and network policies. The reviewed LetsVPN material does not verify equivalent enterprise identity integration. Ask whether accounts can be tied to your identity provider, disabled immediately, restricted by group and audited.

Full tunnel versus split tunnel

A full tunnel sends internet traffic through the VPN, which can improve centralized inspection but increases bandwidth, latency and cloud-egress use. Split tunneling keeps selected internet traffic local while sending private subnets through the VPN; it can perform better but gives administrators less visibility. Internal DNS, return routes, overlapping private ranges, IPv6, MTU, cloud security groups and firewall rules all affect the result.

OpenVPN describes TCP and UDP transport, built-in X.509 PKI and Data Channel Offload (DCO), which moves data-channel encryption work into the kernel. DCO can improve throughput on supported platforms, but it is not a universal benchmark guarantee. UDP may be blocked on restrictive networks; TCP fallback can work at the cost of performance. The product comparison materials describe IPv6 support as partial, so do not assume complete IPv6 parity.

Performance and reliability

There is no universal speed winner. LetsVPN may feel faster for a casual user when its provider has a nearby, lightly loaded gateway. Access Server may be faster or slower depending on server location, CPU, network capacity, concurrent users, protocol, DCO support, full- versus split-tunnel traffic, packet loss and MTU. LetsVPN advertises automatic routing and fast connections, but the reviewed sources provide no independently reproducible benchmark.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LetsVPN’s provider handles node maintenance and lets users switch routes. For Access Server, uptime depends on your host, ISP, cloud region, patches, backups and failover design. Test recovery rather than assuming that a clustering feature alone creates high availability.

LetsVPN

Prices vary by site and storefront. A LetsVPN-branded site displayed $11.99 monthly, $6.67 monthly equivalent on an annual plan and $3.33 monthly equivalent on a two-year plan. The U.S. App Store listing displayed, among other purchases, $6.99 per month for Standard and $9.99 per month for Platinum. These were observed around August 16–18, 2026; currency, taxes, renewal pricing, refunds and device limits can change. Check the exact checkout page and seller.

Access Server

OpenVPN’s pricing page lists a free tier for up to two simultaneous connections, a 14-day business trial and Growth pricing displayed from $7 per concurrent connection per month, with an example of $70 per month for 10 connections billed annually (pricing). A concurrent connection is not the same as a named employee: many registered users may share a smaller peak, while a large workforce may need many simultaneous sessions.

Budget separately for the VM or hardware, public IP, bandwidth and cloud egress, administrator time, monitoring, backups, support, identity integration, hardening and redundant nodes. The two-connection tier is not a substitute for production business design.

Decision guide

Choose LetsVPN if

  • You want to protect a laptop or phone on public Wi-Fi with minimal setup.
  • You travel and need provider-operated locations without managing servers.
  • You do not need access to a company’s private subnets or internal applications.
  • You accept dependence on a proprietary app, provider policy and provider availability.

Choose Access Server if

  • Authorized users must reach internal applications or private IP ranges.
  • You need site-to-site routing, SSO, MFA, group policies or controlled offboarding.
  • You can staff Linux, networking, certificates, backups and upgrades.
  • You require customer-selected hosting, clustering, failover or air-gapped operation.

Choose another category if

  • You want business VPN networking without operating servers: evaluate a managed service such as OpenVPN CloudConnexa.
  • You want open-source self-hosting and can accept more configuration and support work: evaluate OpenVPN Community Edition or WireGuard.
  • You need device-to-device mesh connectivity: investigate a mesh VPN.
  • You need firewall-integrated site-to-site networking: investigate a VPN appliance or cloud-native networking service.

Bottom line

LetsVPN wins on convenience for personal browsing, travel and public Wi-Fi. OpenVPN Access Server wins when the VPN is part of your organization’s network: private-subnet access, identity integration, routing control, self-hosting and high-availability design. If you need managed business networking but not server administration, neither is the ideal match; evaluate a managed business VPN or ZTNA service instead.
