Use Steam Broadcasting. In the Steam client, open Steam > Settings > Broadcasting, choose who may watch, then have your friend select Watch Game from your profile or Friends List. For ordinary friend-to-friend viewing, you do not need OBS, Twitch, YouTube, or an RTMP key.
How to let friends watch your Steam game
On the host’s PC
- Open the Steam client.
- Select Steam > Settings.
- Open Broadcasting. Steam may change labels or menu placement between client updates, so look for the Broadcasting section rather than relying on an old screenshot.
- Choose the privacy option that matches your audience.
- Launch the game and remain signed in to Steam.
Steam’s built-in broadcast normally starts when someone begins watching and ends when you close the game. It does not automatically mean that everyone can see you whenever you play; your broadcasting privacy setting controls access. See Steam’s Broadcasting overview.
On the viewer’s PC
- Open the Steam Friends List.
- Find the friend who is currently in-game.
- Open the friend’s profile or menu.
- Select Watch Game.
- If Steam sends a watch request, wait for the host to approve it.
Steam can also expose public broadcasts through Community and game-hub areas, but that is different from a private friend-only session.

Which broadcasting privacy setting should you use?
The wording can vary slightly in the current Steam client. The practical meanings are:

Steam’s published material says that the first time a friend asks to watch, you may be shown broadcasting privacy controls. If you want a predictable, friend-only experience, use an invite-only or request-based option rather than a public setting.
Protect your desktop and private information
Steam Broadcasting is designed around game capture, but you should not assume that every desktop action is invisible. Steam Support documents placeholder behavior when it cannot capture the active game, and capture behavior can differ when you switch applications or enable external-application capture. Read the Steam Broadcasting FAQ.
- Close private chats, email, password managers, documents, and unrelated launchers before broadcasting.
- Do not switch to the desktop while assuming that the broadcast has stopped.
- Test with a trusted friend before selecting a public audience.
- Check how your game launcher, mod manager, or anti-cheat screen behaves.
- Disable Broadcasting when you no longer need it.
Why “Watch Game” is missing
The button is conditional. Steam may not show it when the host is not actually marked in-game, broadcasting is disabled, a request is awaiting approval, the client has not refreshed, or Steam cannot expose the game correctly.

- Confirm that both accounts are online and are Steam friends.
- Make sure the host has launched the game, not merely opened Steam.
- Check the host’s Settings > Broadcasting privacy option.
- Have the viewer refresh the Friends List and try again.
- Restart Steam on both computers if the status is stale.
- Try borderless-windowed or windowed mode if the game is not being captured.
- Temporarily disable conflicting overlays or capture tools.
- Try another game to determine whether the problem is game-specific.

Why the viewer sees a blank or waiting screen
A waiting or placeholder screen can appear when the game loses focus, Steam cannot capture its rendering mode, or the connection or encoding process is temporarily struggling. Return to the game window, wait briefly, and try again. Full-screen exclusive modes, elevated games, protected or anti-cheat windows, unusual launchers, and some non-Steam games can be less reliable than ordinary windowed or borderless games.
Fix lag and disconnections
Playback depends on both ends of the connection. The host’s upload capacity, the viewer’s download capacity, Wi-Fi quality, VPNs, firewall rules, background uploads, and hardware load can all affect the stream. Higher quality also increases bandwidth and encoding demands.

- Stop background downloads and uploads on both computers.
- Test without a VPN if Steam Broadcasting is unstable.
- Prefer a wired connection or a strong Wi-Fi signal.
- Try a less demanding display mode or lower game resolution.
- Reduce broadcasting quality if the current Steam controls offer that option.
- Test another game to separate a game-specific capture problem from a network problem.
There is no single reliable bandwidth number that applies to every current Steam Broadcasting session, so treat quality settings and real-world network conditions as variables rather than guarantees.
Audio, microphones, and webcams
Steam Broadcasting can carry gameplay video and associated audio, but do not assume that every microphone or voice-chat configuration will be included. Test game volume, microphone input, Steam voice settings, party chat, and in-game voice chat with the intended viewer. The viewer should also check for echo if the host’s microphone is picking up speakers.
Basic friend watching is not a complete creator-streaming setup. It does not automatically provide the scenes, alerts, moderation, webcam layout, analytics, or multistreaming workflow associated with a dedicated streaming setup.

Broadcasting versus Remote Play Together

Remote Play Together is not a higher-quality Broadcasting mode. It is a separate feature that streams video, audio, and voice while allowing participation in supported local multiplayer games. See Steam Remote Play.
When OBS, Discord, Twitch, or YouTube is the better choice
Use Steam Broadcasting when one or more friends simply need to watch through Steam. Choose OBS with Twitch, YouTube, or another streaming platform when you need webcam scenes, alerts, moderation, public creator discovery, analytics, multistreaming, reliable desktop capture, or a recorded-video workflow. Discord screen sharing is another practical option for a private group.

- Set Broadcasting to request-based or invite-only.
- Confirm who is allowed to watch before launching the game.
- Close private applications and notifications.
- Test video and audio with a trusted friend.
- Tell viewers when you are switching away from the game.
- Turn Broadcasting off when finished.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a friend need to own the game to watch?
Steam’s Broadcasting information does not establish game ownership as a general requirement for ordinary viewing. If Steam presents a game-specific restriction, follow that prompt.
Does Steam save the broadcast?
Steam Broadcasting is intended for live viewing. Do not treat it as an automatic recording or video-archive service.
Can someone watch from a browser?
Steam provides several broadcast and Community viewing surfaces, but the most dependable friend-watching path is the Steam client’s profile or Friends List and its Watch Game option.
