Both first-generation Lenovo ThinkPad X9 Aura Edition laptops—the X9 14 and X9 15—use Intel Core Ultra 200V Series 2 processors, commonly known by the platform codename Lunar Lake. The X9 14 is the more portable choice; the larger X9 15 has a bigger battery, a roomier OLED screen and a USB-A port. Neither is a conventional ThinkPad: both replace the familiar TrackPoint and buttons with a glass haptic touchpad, and their memory is soldered.
For most professionals, the most sensible configuration is a Core Ultra 5 model with 32GB of RAM and at least 512GB of storage. Choose the X9 14 when size and weight matter most, or the X9 15 for more screen space, battery capacity and everyday port flexibility. Skip both if you need a TrackPoint, upgradeable memory, discrete graphics or sustained high multicore performance.
Which ThinkPad X9 Aura models use Lunar Lake?
The Lunar Lake models are the ThinkPad X9 14 Aura Edition Gen 1 and ThinkPad X9 15 Aura Edition Gen 1. Lenovo’s formal specification documents call their processors Intel Core Ultra 200V Series 2; Lunar Lake is the familiar platform name. The X9 14 is listed on Lenovo’s product page, and the X9 15’s configuration details are in its PSREF specification sheet.
Do not confuse these with the ThinkPad X9 15p Aura Edition, a separate 2026 product using newer Core Ultra X-series/Series 3 processors. It is not a Lunar Lake X9. Lenovo describes that newer model in its CES 2026 announcement.

Several names appear in listings and marketing, but they refer to different things:
- Lunar Lake: the platform codename.
- Core Ultra 200V / Series 2: the processor family.
- Arc 130V or 140V: the integrated graphics, depending on processor.
- Intel AI Boost: the processor’s neural processing unit, or NPU.
- Aura Edition: Lenovo’s product design and software-experience branding, not a CPU or a guarantee of identical specifications across models.
Lenovo associates Aura Edition with Smart Experiences software, alongside utilities such as Commercial Vantage and Intel Connectivity Performance Suite. Exact features and included software can depend on configuration, software version and region. See Lenovo’s Innovation World 2025 announcement for its product positioning.
X9 14 vs. X9 15: the practical differences
| Feature | ThinkPad X9 14 Aura Edition | ThinkPad X9 15 Aura Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Screen | 14-inch WUXGA OLED, 60Hz; touch varies by configuration | 15.3-inch 2.8K OLED; touch and non-touch options, up to 120Hz variable refresh rate |
| Published display highlights | 400-nit specification; 100% DCI-P3 | Up to 500 nits, with HDR peak behavior listed up to 1,100 nits; 100% DCI-P3 |
| Battery capacity | 55Wh | 80Wh |
| Ports | Two Thunderbolt 4, HDMI and 3.5mm audio; no USB-A | Two Thunderbolt 4, HDMI, USB-A and 3.5mm audio |
| Processor family | Core Ultra 200V Series 2 options | Core Ultra 200V Series 2 options, up to Core Ultra 7 268V |
| Memory | Up to 32GB soldered LPDDR5x | Up to 32GB soldered LPDDR5x-8533 |
| Audio | Configuration-dependent; check the exact SKU | Four-speaker Dolby Atmos system |
These are not simply the same laptop in two screen sizes. The X9 14 is easier to carry, but its 55Wh battery and missing USB-A make it the more compromise-heavy choice for a desk setup or legacy accessories. The X9 15 is the more practical all-rounder if you can accept a larger chassis: it has a 25Wh larger battery, more workspace and a USB-A connection. Actual weight and display behavior vary by configuration; check the selected SKU rather than assuming every listing has the same panel or battery details.
For either model, two Thunderbolt 4 ports can support a dock or USB-C adapters, but that is less convenient than built-in legacy ports. With the X9 14 in particular, budget for a dock or adapter if you regularly connect USB-A devices, external displays or wired peripherals.
What Lunar Lake means for performance
The listed X9 processors have eight CPU cores—four performance cores and four low-power efficiency cores—and eight threads. They do not use conventional Hyper-Threading. Core Ultra 5 options pair with Intel Arc 130V integrated graphics; Core Ultra 7 options use Arc 140V. These are capable integrated graphics for everyday work and some lighter creative or gaming tasks, not a replacement for a discrete GPU.

| Processor | Maximum P-core clock | Integrated graphics | Maximum NPU rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core Ultra 5 226V | 4.5GHz | Arc 130V, up to 53 graphics TOPS | Up to 40 TOPS |
| Core Ultra 5 228V | 4.5GHz | Arc 130V, up to 53 graphics TOPS | Up to 40 TOPS |

| Core Ultra 7 268V | 5.0GHz | Arc 140V, up to 66 graphics TOPS | Up to 48 TOPS |
These are manufacturer maximums, not measurements of application speed. The number most likely to be repeated in a product headline—48 NPU TOPS—belongs to the top 268V, not every X9. Core Ultra 5 models are listed at up to 40 NPU TOPS. Lenovo’s PSREF also lists total platform TOPS, but those figures should not be treated as a direct benchmark or as proof that a particular app will run faster.
Lunar Lake’s strengths are responsive everyday performance, power efficiency, modern integrated graphics and dedicated AI acceleration. Its eight-core ceiling is less suited to sustained rendering or other workloads that scale across many CPU cores than larger H-series or high-performance Ryzen chips. Integrated graphics also lack CUDA support and cannot stand in for a workstation GPU in demanding 3D or machine-learning workflows.

Independent X9 14 results show why configuration and test conditions matter. TechRadar’s review of a Core Ultra 7 258V unit reported Geekbench 6 scores of 2,639 single-core and 10,607 multicore, PCMark 10 at 7,139, and 16 hours 10 minutes in its battery test. Tom’s Guide tested a Core Ultra 5 226V configuration and reported Geekbench 6 scores of 2,545 single-core and 10,049 multicore, a 7:46 HandBrake transcode and 10:09 battery life. Those are results for specific review units and methods, not guarantees for every X9. The reviewers also found that the 268V’s gains over the 258V could be modest in ordinary tests; paying a large premium for it is hard to justify unless you need its particular features or the price gap is small.
What kind of ThinkPad is the X9?
The X9 Aura models depart deliberately from familiar ThinkPad conventions. Their Glacier White aluminum styling, glass haptic touchpad and premium thin-and-light positioning replace the black, function-first look many ThinkPad buyers expect. Most notably, there is no TrackPoint or set of physical TrackPoint buttons. If you depend on pointing with the red nub, neither X9 is a safe purchase without trying the input layout first.
The memory is soldered, so a buyer cannot add RAM later. Lenovo cites MIL-STD-810H testing, but that is a manufacturer testing claim—not a promise that a particular laptop will withstand drops, spills or rough handling. The X9 is best understood as a premium portable business laptop, not a direct replacement for a traditional T-series machine or a P-series workstation. Lenovo’s product announcement outlines the design, camera and material claims in its X9 launch material.

Which configuration should you buy?
Core Ultra 5 or Core Ultra 7?
For office work, browser-heavy days, calls, general development and travel, a Core Ultra 5 228V or 238V is the value-minded choice. Choose a Core Ultra 7 258V or 268V if you specifically want the Arc 140V graphics, a higher NPU rating, higher peak clocks, or—in supported 268V configurations—vPro manageability. Do not assume the 268V will make ordinary work dramatically faster than a 258V. The price difference matters more than the badge if your tasks are mostly web, email and documents.
16GB or 32GB of RAM?
Prefer 32GB if you use virtual machines, keep large development environments open, work with many browser tabs, experiment with local AI, or plan to keep the laptop for several years. Because RAM is soldered, the choice is permanent. Sixteen gigabytes can work for routine office use, but it leaves less headroom for heavier multitasking and long ownership.
How much storage?
Choose 512GB as a practical baseline and 1TB for a longer replacement cycle, sizeable project files or local media. Verify the exact model’s storage configuration and upgrade options before ordering; configurations can differ. SSD serviceability is a more realistic prospect than upgrading RAM, but do not assume every SKU has the same drive arrangement.
Is OLED worth it?
OLED gives these laptops strong contrast and wide color coverage, and the X9 15’s panel options add high resolution and up to 120Hz refresh. The trade-offs are reflections and potential battery cost: bright, light-colored content can draw more power than a comparable IPS display. If you work outdoors, prefer matte screens or need the longest possible runtime, compare the exact panel and consider whether OLED’s visual benefits matter to your work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Battery life: capacity is not a runtime promise
The X9 15’s 80Wh battery gives it a capacity advantage over the X9 14’s 55Wh battery, but it does not guarantee a particular number of working hours. Screen brightness, OLED content, refresh rate, workload, wireless use and power settings all affect runtime. The published review results for the X9 14 differ substantially—10:09 in Tom’s Guide’s test and 16:10 in TechRadar’s—so use them as examples of test-specific outcomes, not a direct prediction for your day. For context, TechRadar noted that a competing system with a larger battery and IPS display lasted longer in its comparison.

Copilot+ PC and AI: capability, not a guarantee
Core Ultra 200V hardware includes an NPU for supported AI workloads. A system is eligible as a Copilot+ PC when configured to meet Microsoft’s hardware requirements, including a 40-TOPS-or-higher NPU, at least 16GB of memory and 256GB of storage. Eligibility describes a hardware and software threshold; it does not mean every AI feature runs locally, works offline, or is available in every country, language, Windows edition or application.
Think of NPU TOPS as potential capacity, not a measure of useful productivity. A feature benefits from the NPU only if Windows or the application supports it and routes work there. If you have no specific local AI workflow in mind, do not pay a large premium solely for a larger TOPS figure.
Linux and business deployment
Lenovo lists Linux-related preload options for the X9 15, but that should not be read as a guarantee that every hardware feature works as it does in Windows. Lenovo’s PSREF warns of potential Linux limitations for Intel RST RAID, the MIPI computer-vision camera, WWAN and Human Presence Detection. If your workflow depends on any of those, confirm support for the exact configuration and Linux distribution before deployment. For IT buyers, also check whether the specific processor SKU includes the vPro capabilities your management and security tooling requires; not every X9 configuration is the same.
Who should consider an alternative?
- ThinkPad X1 Carbon Aura Edition: Compare it if you want a more recognizable flagship ThinkPad identity. Check the exact keyboard and pointing devices, display, weight, warranty and price at equivalent memory and storage before deciding; do not assume its specifications match the X9.
- ThinkPad T14 or T14s: Better candidates if traditional ThinkPad ergonomics, conventional connectivity, fleet consistency or serviceability matter more than the X9’s distinctive design.
- ThinkPad X9 15p: A separate 2026 Series 3/Core Ultra X product for buyers investigating newer, more performance-oriented hardware. It is outside this Lunar Lake comparison, and its existence does not make the X9 15 a Series 3 model.
- MacBook Air: Worth comparing if macOS works with your tools. In Tom’s Guide’s tested comparison, the M4 MacBook Air outscored the X9 14 in several benchmarks and lasted longer in its battery test. That result is specific to the tested systems; a Mac is not a substitute if you require Windows-only software, enterprise tooling or peripherals.
- Snapdragon/ARM Windows laptops: Consider them if battery efficiency is your priority, but verify compatibility with your x86 applications, drivers, corporate security tools, peripherals, virtualization needs and games or anti-cheat software.
Recommendations by buyer
- Most portable: X9 14 with 32GB RAM, if the lack of USB-A and smaller battery suit your routine.
- Best all-rounder for many professionals: X9 15 with a sensibly priced Core Ultra 5 or Core Ultra 7 and 32GB RAM. Its larger battery, screen and USB-A port make it easier to use without a dock.
- Best value configuration: Core Ultra 5 228V or 238V, 32GB RAM and 512GB or 1TB storage, depending on price and workload.
- Premium choice: Core Ultra 7 268V when vPro or its stronger integrated graphics matter, or when the upgrade costs little—not simply because it is the top number.
- Better to skip: Either X9 if you need a TrackPoint, replaceable RAM, a discrete GPU, heavy sustained multicore performance, or complete Linux support for every listed feature.
Prices and exact configurations vary by country, seller and sale. Historical review-period prices are not reliable current quotes; compare live listings at equivalent RAM, storage, screen and warranty levels. Start with Lenovo’s X9 14 page or X9 15 page, then verify the processor and memory on the configuration you are actually buying.
