Yes—but only for the right buyer and configuration. The Lenovo ThinkPad X9 Aura Edition is worth considering if you want a thin, premium Windows laptop with an excellent OLED display, comfortable keyboard, strong webcam features, and modern Copilot+ capabilities. It is not the best choice for maximum performance per dollar, extensive built-in ports, upgradeable memory, discrete graphics, or the traditional ThinkPad TrackPoint experience.
For most buyers, the 15-inch X9 is the better value when its price is close to the 14-inch model. Its 80Wh battery and larger 2.8K OLED display make it more practical for sustained mobile work. Choose the 14-inch model when compactness and travel weight matter more than battery capacity and screen area.

The X9 is a premium productivity ultraportable, not a workstation. Its value comes from the combination of build quality, display, keyboard, touchpad, portability, webcam, and Windows compatibility—not from exceptional raw performance or AI branding alone.
What the ThinkPad X9 Aura Edition actually is
The name primarily refers to two first-generation Intel models: the ThinkPad X9 14 Aura Edition and the ThinkPad X9 15 Aura Edition.

Both use Intel Core Ultra 200V-series processors, integrated Intel Arc graphics, soldered LPDDR5x memory, and an NPU rated up to 48 TOPS on applicable configurations. They are designed for office work, programming, research, video calls, large browser sessions, light creative work, and supported local AI functions.
They are also a departure from the conventional ThinkPad formula. Lenovo uses a premium aluminum design, a large haptic touchpad, and a more modern visual approach. The X9 keeps business-oriented security and durability positioning, but it does not reproduce every traditional ThinkPad feature.
Do not confuse the original X9 15 with the newer ThinkPad X9 15p Aura Edition. Lenovo announced the 15p in 2026 with an estimated starting price of $1,999 and expected Q1 2026 availability, but final US stock, specifications, and checkout pricing should be confirmed separately through Lenovo’s official announcement.

US pricing: the configuration matters more than the family name
Lenovo’s US catalog showed one X9 15 configuration at approximately $1,629, while listed X9 14 configurations appeared around $1,949–$2,109 in the available storefront snapshot. These are not permanent prices: Lenovo discounts, coupons, inventory, warranty terms, and custom configuration options can change the final checkout amount.
Use these as practical buying bands, not official Lenovo classifications:
- Excellent value: a substantial discount with 32GB RAM and 1TB storage.
- Fair value: roughly $1,500–$1,700 for a well-equipped X9 15, depending on the display, operating system, and warranty.
- Questionable value: more than $1,900 for an X9 14 with Core Ultra 5, 16GB RAM, or limited storage.
- Poor value: flagship pricing for a base-memory or base-storage configuration when a better-equipped alternative is available.
Before ordering, confirm the exact Lenovo part number and check the processor, RAM, SSD, display, Windows edition, warranty, and final price. Lenovo’s product pages list possible components; not every retail SKU includes every listed option. The Lenovo US ThinkPad buying page is useful for comparing current catalog listings, but the checkout configuration is the final authority.
14-inch versus 15-inch: which one is better?

The 15-inch version is not simply a larger X9. Its 80Wh battery gives it a meaningful advantage for mobile work, while the larger screen is more comfortable for spreadsheets, timelines, coding, and side-by-side documents. It is usually the stronger purchase when the two models are similarly priced.

The 14-inch model is easier to fit in smaller bags and may be preferable on airplanes or in crowded commutes. However, its smaller battery and potentially higher price make it harder to recommend on value alone. Buy it because you need the smaller footprint, not because the 14-inch label automatically means better portability-per-dollar.
Build quality, keyboard, and touchpad
The X9’s premium aluminum construction, thin profile, and solid chassis are among its strongest arguments over cheaper Windows laptops. Reviews generally praise its comfortable keyboard and large haptic touchpad, making it a good fit for writing, office work, coding, and long browsing sessions.
It also includes business-oriented features such as a webcam privacy shutter, security tools, and, on selected configurations, a fingerprint reader. Lenovo positions the platform as business-ready and cites MIL-STD-810H testing for ThinkPad models. That is a testing designation, not a promise that the laptop is indestructible or superior to every consumer machine.
The missing TrackPoint is a major buying decision
The X9 is a ThinkPad in branding and business positioning, but it is not a conventional ThinkPad input experience. There is no TrackPoint, and the keyboard layout differs from classic ThinkPad families such as the X1 Carbon and T14s.
This is not automatically a defect. Buyers who prefer a large modern touchpad may never miss it. But long-time ThinkPad users who depend on the TrackPoint, physical pointing-stick buttons, or familiar keyboard geometry should try an X9 before committing—or choose a conventional ThinkPad instead.
Display quality: excellent, but not universally ideal
The X9’s OLED screen is one of its most durable advantages over ordinary business laptops. OLED provides deep blacks, high contrast, vivid color, and an excellent experience for photos, video, presentations, and general use.
The 15-inch model is specified with a 15.3-inch, 2880×1800 OLED panel rated at up to 500 nits, 100% DCI-P3 coverage, HDR support, and variable refresh up to 120Hz on the listed panel. The 14-inch model can be sold with either a 1920×1200 OLED panel at 60Hz or a 2880×1800 OLED touch panel with HDR and refresh rates up to 120Hz. The exact display must be checked against the SKU.

There are trade-offs:
- A high-resolution OLED panel can consume more power than a lower-resolution IPS display in some workloads.
- Static desktop elements create the usual long-term image-retention and burn-in concern.
- High refresh rate, HDR, and high brightness can reduce battery life.
- People sensitive to display flicker or PWM should consult independent measurements of the specific panel.
- Glossy OLED surfaces may be less comfortable in brightly lit offices than a matte business display.
OLED is better for contrast and color; it is not automatically better for every text-heavy workplace or every battery scenario.

Available processors include the Core Ultra 5 226V, Core Ultra 5 228V, Core Ultra 7 258V, and selected Core Ultra 7 268V configurations with vPro. The integrated Intel Arc graphics are suitable for a thin-and-light laptop, but they do not turn the X9 into a workstation.
Good workloads
- Microsoft Office and Google Workspace
- Large browser sessions and research
- Software development and coding tools
- Video conferencing
- Writing, spreadsheets, and presentations
- Light photo editing
- Occasional 1080p video editing
- Supported Windows and application AI features
Less suitable workloads
- Long CPU rendering jobs
- High-end 4K video production
- 3D modeling and rendering
- GPU-intensive games
- Professional applications requiring discrete graphics
- Virtual-machine-heavy workflows needing 64GB or more RAM
Independent reviews generally describe the X9 as a capable ultraportable while criticizing its price-to-performance ratio. Apple laptops and some ARM-based Windows systems can deliver better efficiency or performance in particular workloads. The X9’s advantage is broader Windows compatibility and business-oriented hardware, not benchmark leadership.
Battery life: good potential, but do not trust one universal number
Battery results vary significantly between X9 configurations and test methods. Notebookcheck measured approximately 14 hours for an X9 14 in its Wi-Fi test. WIRED reported about 12 hours 15 minutes in local video playback. Tom’s Guide recorded substantially weaker results on its reviewed configuration, closer to five or six hours in its real-world testing.
These results are not necessarily contradictory. Battery life changes with:
- OLED resolution and panel type
- Brightness and HDR
- 60Hz versus 120Hz refresh
- Browser behavior and video codecs
- Power mode and battery-saver settings
- Firmware and driver versions
- Background services and external displays
The 15-inch model’s 80Wh battery gives it the better endurance foundation, but it does not guarantee a specific number of hours. The 14-inch model may use a 55Wh battery on some configurations. Treat “all-day battery” as workload-dependent rather than a fixed promise, and test sleep or Modern Standby behavior during the return period if you frequently close the lid between meetings.
Ports and connectivity: the clearest compromise
Thinness comes at a practical cost. Reviews repeatedly criticize the 14-inch X9 for its limited port selection and lack of USB-A. The 15-inch chassis is more accommodating for legacy peripherals, but it still does not offer the port breadth of thicker business laptops.

Because the port mix can vary by model and the exact SKU matters, check the relevant X9 14 PSREF or X9 15 PSREF before purchasing. Ask whether your setup needs:
- A USB-C dock or travel hub
- USB-C-to-USB-A connectivity
- HDMI or DisplayPort adapters
- Ethernet through a dock
- A card reader
- Multiple external monitors
Include the dock or adapter cost in the effective purchase price. If your workday involves a wired network, multiple displays, older USB accessories, and memory cards, a conventional ThinkPad may be a better fit even if the X9 looks more premium.

Is Aura Edition or Copilot+ worth paying for?
Aura Edition combines Lenovo software features aimed at productivity, wellness, collaboration, focus, and privacy. Copilot+ identifies a Windows PC with an NPU capable of supporting compatible AI functions. The X9’s NPU is rated up to 48 TOPS on applicable configurations.
These features can be useful, but they should not be the main reason to pay a premium. Availability and usefulness depend on Windows updates, application support, account requirements, and regional rollout. Some advertised functions may change over the laptop’s lifetime.
The durable value is the hardware: the display, webcam, microphones, battery capacity, keyboard, touchpad, chassis, and Windows compatibility. Treat Aura software and Copilot+ capabilities as bonuses that may improve a supported workflow, not as proof that every X9 is faster or more future-proof than a similarly priced laptop.

The X9’s thin design has consequences. Memory is soldered, with configurations up to 32GB, so it cannot be upgraded later. Storage is listed up to a 1TB PCIe Gen4 SSD on the 15-inch product page, but the installed capacity depends on the purchased configuration.

For long-term ownership:
- Choose 32GB RAM if you multitask heavily, develop software, use virtual machines, work with large spreadsheets, or expect to keep the laptop for many years.
- Choose 1TB storage when the price premium is reasonable.
- Confirm whether the laptop includes Windows 11 Home or Pro.
- Consider extended warranty or accidental-damage coverage if the laptop is business-critical.
- Review the return policy before testing battery behavior, display comfort, sleep drain, and ports.
A thicker ThinkPad T-series model may offer a more conventional service and upgrade experience. The X9 is better understood as a premium sealed ultraportable than as a highly configurable business machine.

X9 versus the main alternatives
MacBook Air 15
The MacBook Air is the stronger alternative if you do not require Windows, Windows-only applications, or conventional enterprise PC management. Independent comparisons have found advantages for the MacBook Air in some battery and performance tests.
The X9 makes more sense when you need Windows compatibility, prefer OLED contrast and color, want selected business features, need up to 32GB memory in the available configuration, or work within a Windows fleet. Compare actual RAM, storage, warranty, application compatibility, and display preferences—not just advertised battery numbers.
Microsoft Surface Laptop
The Surface Laptop is a sensible option for buyers who want a clean Windows design and may prioritize efficiency or lower weight. The X9 is more compelling if its OLED display, ThinkPad business positioning, webcam features, or Lenovo support options matter more. Check processor architecture carefully if your applications or peripherals have compatibility requirements.

The X1 Carbon is the more natural choice for buyers who want a traditional premium ThinkPad: TrackPoint support, familiar ergonomics, broader business configuration options, and a conventional fleet-oriented design. The X9 is more lifestyle-oriented, with a larger touchpad and OLED-first presentation.
ThinkPad T14s
The T14s is worth considering when ports, traditional ThinkPad controls, configuration flexibility, and conventional business deployment are more important than the X9’s aluminum styling and OLED appeal. It may be the better tool for a corporate fleet or a user who regularly connects multiple accessories.
ThinkPad X9 15p
The X9 15p is a newer, different model—not an updated name for the original X9 15. Lenovo announced an estimated $1,999 starting price, but final US retail configurations and availability should be confirmed before treating it as a direct buy recommendation. If the original X9 15 is heavily discounted, it may offer better value for buyers who do not need the newer platform.
Who should buy the X9?
- You want a premium Windows ultraportable rather than the lowest-cost performance.
- You value a high-quality OLED display and comfortable input devices.
- You need Windows-specific applications or business management.
- You prefer the 15-inch screen but do not want a heavy workstation.
- You can accept a USB-C hub or dock.
- You do not use the TrackPoint.
- You can buy 32GB RAM at a competitive sale price.
Who should skip it?
- You depend on the TrackPoint or classic ThinkPad keyboard layout.
- You need many built-in ports and legacy connectivity.
- You require upgradeable RAM or 64GB-plus memory.
- You need discrete graphics for gaming, 3D, or professional video work.
- You want maximum performance per dollar.
- You are comparing it with a MacBook Air only for battery life or efficiency.
- You are uncomfortable with OLED’s image-retention risk or glossy reflections.
- The available configuration is priced near newer, more powerful alternatives without additional business value.
How to buy the right configuration
- Start with the size: choose the 15-inch model if prices are close; choose the 14-inch model when compactness is worth the premium.
- Prefer 32GB RAM: memory is soldered and cannot be added later.
- Target 1TB storage: it is the more comfortable long-term choice if the upgrade cost is reasonable.
- Confirm the panel: do not assume every 14-inch X9 has the same resolution, refresh rate, touch support, or battery behavior.
- Confirm Windows edition: Home and Pro are not interchangeable for every business environment.
- Price the accessories: add a dock, USB-A adapter, display adapter, or Ethernet solution if your workflow needs one.
- Check support and returns: verify warranty coverage, accidental-damage options, and the return window before purchase.
At the latest available US catalog snapshot, the practical target is a well-equipped X9 15 around $1,500–$1,700. An X9 14 should generally be discounted or offer a clearly better portability benefit before its roughly $1,900-plus pricing becomes attractive.
