The Lenovo ThinkPad X395 can still be a capable, compact used laptop for office work, programming, travel, and Linux—but only if you choose the right configuration. Look for 16GB of soldered RAM, a 1920×1080 IPS display, a healthy 48Wh battery, and an NVMe SSD. The 8GB memory cannot be upgraded, and an HD TN screen or badly worn battery can make an otherwise appealing deal hard to live with. Lenovo lists January 4, 2026 as the end-of-support date for X395 configurations, so buy it as an inexpensive older business laptop, not as a current premium machine.
What the ThinkPad X395 is
The ThinkPad X395 is a 13.3-inch business ultraportable introduced around 2019–2020. It paired an X-series ThinkPad chassis with AMD Ryzen PRO processors, integrated Radeon Vega graphics, business security options, and the familiar ThinkPad keyboard and TrackPoint. It was positioned as an AMD counterpart to the Intel-based ThinkPad X390.
Lenovo lists dimensions of about 311.9 × 217.2 × 16.9mm (12.28 × 8.55 × 0.67 inches) and a starting weight of roughly 1.28kg (2.82lb) for an FHD non-touch configuration. Actual weight varies with the screen and options. Lenovo’s X395 specifications describe a magnesium-aluminum lower chassis and a PPS/glass-fiber upper surface.

Performance: useful for everyday work, not demanding modern workloads
The Ryzen PRO processors are four-core chips from an older mobile generation. The Ryzen 3 PRO 3300U has four threads; the Ryzen 5 PRO 3500U and Ryzen 7 PRO 3700U have eight. Their base and boost clocks are respectively 2.1/3.5GHz, 2.1/3.7GHz, and 2.3/4.0GHz. PRO branding indicates business-oriented features; it does not make these processors equivalent to today’s Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 chips.
For ordinary productivity, a 16GB X395 remains useful: document editing, email, web apps, remote administration, terminal work, programming, 1080p media playback, and moderate video calls are reasonable workloads. A Ryzen 5 PRO 3500U is generally the value pick. The Ryzen 7 PRO 3700U is welcome if the price is close, but do not pay a large premium for its name.

They can handle basic photo work and older or lightweight games at reduced settings, but the X395 is not a good choice for modern demanding games, serious 4K editing, heavy CAD or 3D work, or sustained workloads where newer processors offer substantially more performance and efficiency. No benchmark conclusion follows from the specifications alone.
Memory is the decision you cannot undo
The X395’s 8GB or 16GB of DDR4 memory is soldered to the motherboard. There are no memory slots, so an 8GB unit cannot be upgraded later. Lenovo notes that memory rated for 2666MHz may operate at DDR4-2400 because of processor limitations.
- Choose 16GB for Windows 11, lots of browser tabs, development tools, multitasking, or keeping the laptop for several years.
- Consider 8GB only for light office use, a Linux desktop, thin-client work, or a genuinely low price.
- Do not assume a seller can add RAM after purchase. The configuration is effectively permanent.
When comparing used listings, prioritize RAM, screen, and battery condition ahead of the processor tier. A well-kept Ryzen 5 PRO model with 16GB and a good screen is often a better buy than a Ryzen 7 model with 8GB and a poor panel.
Display: make FHD IPS your baseline
There are substantially different panels under the X395 name. Lenovo lists the following options:

Do not accept “1080p” as the only display detail in a listing: it does not establish the panel type or whether PrivacyGuard is fitted. Ask for the exact resolution and panel type, or a clear photo of Windows display settings and the machine’s identification. Lenovo’s PSREF display table is the reference for the original options.
Storage, ports, and docking
The X395 uses an M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD. Storage is a more practical upgrade than RAM; Lenovo lists configurations up to 1TB. For a used machine, 256GB is enough for basic use, while 512GB is a more comfortable primary-drive size. A larger SSD only makes sense if its price is reasonable and its health is sound.
Ask for the SSD model and a health report, including SMART status, total host writes, and temperature. Verify that the drive is actually NVMe and check whether a BIOS storage password or other lock complicates reuse. A generic replacement SSD is not necessarily a problem, but its condition and quality matter.
Lenovo lists two USB-C 3.1 Gen 2 ports with Power Delivery and DisplayPort 1.4, one USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A port with Always On, one USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type-A port, HDMI 2.0, a 3.5mm audio combo jack, a side docking connector, and an Ethernet extension connector. An extension connector is not a standard built-in RJ45 socket; wired Ethernet may require the appropriate adapter.
The USB-C ports can handle charging and display output, but test both. Damage to one can affect charging, external displays, or docking. Ask whether a suitable 45W or 65W USB-C Lenovo charger is included and test it if possible. The X395 can drive its internal screen plus two external displays; Lenovo lists HDMI output up to 4096×2160 at 24Hz and USB-C DisplayPort output up to 4096×2160 at 60Hz. Actual dock and monitor results depend on the dock, display configuration, and operating system. A USB-C dock is not the same thing as a modern USB4 or Thunderbolt setup.
Optional WWAN, smart-card reader, and microSD reader vary by configuration. A SIM-shaped cutout or listing claim is not proof of a working LTE modem: confirm that the WWAN module and antenna hardware are present and suitable for your region and carrier.
Battery life: inspect the actual battery, not the original claim
The internal battery is rated at 48Wh. Lenovo advertised up to about 14.5 hours under controlled test conditions; that figure is not a realistic promise for an aged used laptop. Battery wear, screen type, workload, settings, and wireless use all affect runtime.

Ask the seller for design capacity, full-charge capacity, and cycle count. A pack retaining roughly 70–80% of its original capacity is materially more promising than a heavily worn one, but condition matters more than any single threshold. Budget for replacement if the machine is several years old, and be wary of unbranded replacement packs with uncertain quality.
On Windows, the seller can generate a battery report by opening Command Prompt or PowerShell and running:
powercfg /batteryreportWindows prints the location of the resulting HTML report. Check the design capacity, full-charge capacity, and recent usage rather than relying on “lasts several hours” in an advert.
Keyboard, camera, and business features
The X395 keeps the ThinkPad keyboard layout, TrackPoint, and touchpad, making it appealing for typing and travel. A backlit keyboard is optional, not universal. The chassis is described as spill-resistant, but that is not a reason to expose an older machine to liquid.
Other configuration-dependent features include a ThinkShutter camera cover, optional IR camera for Windows Hello, fingerprint reader, smart-card reader, and PrivacyGuard/PrivacyAlert features. The standard webcam is 720p: functional for calls, but dated compared with newer laptops. Confirm each feature on the actual unit rather than assuming it comes with the model.
Windows 11 and Linux
Lenovo provides an X395 Windows 11 support resource and a support page for drivers and documentation. That is useful evidence, but it does not replace checking the particular machine. Confirm its model details, firmware, TPM 2.0, and Secure Boot state, and use Microsoft’s compatibility checks before installing or relying on Windows 11.
Lenovo’s original specifications also list Linux and Ubuntu options. A Linux installation may suit this business laptop well, but optional features are not guaranteed to work equally across distributions. Test suspend and wake, power management, fingerprint reader, WWAN, camera functions, and any docking setup with the distribution you plan to use.

Lenovo’s model database lists January 4, 2026 as the end-of-support date for X395 configurations. This does not make the laptop stop working or automatically determine operating-system support. It does mean buyers should not assume indefinite Lenovo access to firmware, parts, service, or driver updates. Check the current support page and available documentation before purchase.

Before buying, ask the seller for:
- Exact processor, RAM amount, display resolution, and panel type.
- SSD capacity and health information.
- Battery report showing design capacity, full-charge capacity, and cycle count.
- Confirmation of BIOS supervisor-password status and whether the machine is locked to an organization or Absolute/Computrace service.
- Windows activation status, if Windows is included.
- Whether the original USB-C charger is included, and whether the machine has actual WWAN hardware rather than only a SIM cutout.
- Clear photos of the screen, ports, keyboard, hinges, underside, and BIOS or system identification.
On arrival, test both USB-C ports for charging and display output, both USB-A ports, HDMI, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, webcam, microphone, keyboard, TrackPoint, touchpad, and advertised biometric features. Inspect the screen for dead pixels, pressure marks, and uneven backlighting. Confirm charging, battery discharge, sleep and wake, fan behavior, SSD health, and BIOS or firmware update access.

A missing Ethernet adapter can be an inconvenience rather than a laptop fault, but clarify what is included.
Which X395 configuration should you buy?
- Best overall: Ryzen 5 PRO 3500U, 16GB RAM, FHD IPS, a healthy battery, and a healthy NVMe SSD.
- Worth considering as a premium X395: Ryzen 7 PRO 3700U with 16GB and FHD IPS, provided the price premium is small and the battery is good.
- Budget-only choice: Ryzen 5 PRO with 8GB for light work or Linux, at a clearly lower price. Treat its memory limit as permanent.
- Avoid or price very aggressively: an HD TN model, a worn battery, an unverified USB-C port, or an 8GB configuration priced close to newer alternatives.
Order of importance for most buyers: 16GB RAM, FHD IPS screen, battery condition, then processor tier. Next check SSD health and the ports. Pay extra for WWAN, touch, fingerprint login, IR, or PrivacyGuard only if you will use them.
How it compares with alternatives
ThinkPad X390: A close Intel counterpart with similar compact business positioning. The better choice depends on exact processor, graphics, memory, screen, and condition; neither model wins for every configuration. Check soldered memory and panel quality on either.
ThinkPad T495: Its 14-inch display gives more workspace, and its larger chassis may suit sustained work better. It is also bigger and heavier, making the X395 preferable for buyers who specifically want a 13-inch travel laptop.
ThinkPad X13 Gen 1 AMD: A newer AMD generation is the more attractive option if the price difference is modest and the machine’s condition and configuration are comparable. Verify its memory, screen, battery, and SSD too; a newer model name alone is not enough.
A newer ultraportable: Choose a newer or warrantied laptop if you need longer remaining firmware support, a better webcam, USB4 or newer connectivity, improved battery efficiency, stronger integrated graphics, or warranty coverage. Lenovo’s 2026 ThinkPad portfolio announcement includes newer systems such as the X13 Gen 7, but new-product pricing is not a direct comparison with a used X395.
