The Lenovo B50-30 was a 23.8-inch, 1080p all-in-one offered in configurations ranging from Pentium to Core i7. Brian Fagioli’s March 8, 2015, BetaNews review focused on a high-end version with a Core i7, 12GB of RAM and Nvidia graphics with 2GB of memory. That was a strong specification for its time; it is not a reason to treat every B50-30—or the platform today—as powerful or affordable. A used unit’s value now depends on its exact parts, condition and price.
This is the B50-30 all-in-one desktop, Lenovo machine-type family F0AU—not the similarly named B50-30 notebook. The model has multiple factory configurations, so buyers should verify the specific machine rather than rely on the family name.
What the 2015 review covered
BetaNews published Brian Fagioli’s review on March 8, 2015. Its featured configuration had an Intel Core i7 processor, 12GB of RAM and a discrete Nvidia graphics card with 2GB of memory. Fagioli approached the all-in-one with reservations: a separate desktop and monitor are easier to repair independently. The review considered whether the B50-30’s specification and space-saving design made that compromise worthwhile. Lenovo’s platform specification lists a much broader range of processors, graphics, storage, wireless adapters, cameras and optional features. It does not establish the exact benchmark results, precise i7 or Nvidia model, or measured display performance of the review unit, so none should be inferred from the headline.

Lenovo’s B50-30 platform specification documents options, not a single standard build. Treat every optional feature below as something to confirm on the individual machine.

Display and design
The 23.8-inch IPS panel is one of the platform’s clearest strengths. Its 1920×1080 resolution suits everyday office work, browsing and media, though it is less sharp than a modern 1440p or 4K screen of similar size. Lenovo lists 250-nit brightness: ordinary rather than especially bright. The IPS specification is a more concrete reason to value the screen than the original headline’s subjective “beautiful” description.
The stand adjusts from approximately −5 degrees forward to 45 degrees backward. With the stand, Lenovo lists dimensions of about 22.87 × 8.07 × 18.5 inches and weights of about 18.96 pounds for non-touch models and 19.82 pounds for touch models. The combined screen and computer reduce desktop clutter, but they also concentrate the display and system in one repair-dependent device. Touch was optional, so confirm it rather than assuming it is included.

Performance depends on the exact processor, graphics and drive
Processors
The listed chips are fourth-generation Intel desktop or low-power desktop processors. Their specifications differ meaningfully: the dual-core Pentium G3240 runs at 3.1GHz, while the G3250 is listed at 3.2GHz; the Core i3-4150 and i3-4160 are dual-core, four-thread parts at 3.5GHz and 3.6GHz. The four-core Core i5-4460S is listed at 2.9GHz base and up to 3.4GHz; the i5-4460T at 1.9GHz base and up to 2.7GHz. The Core i7-4785T is four-core/four-thread at 2.2GHz base and up to 3.2GHz; the i7-4790S is four-core/eight-thread at 3.2GHz base and up to 4.0GHz. These are platform specifications, not benchmark results.
For basic office work and browsing, an i5 or i7 paired with an SSD and adequate RAM is the more appealing used configuration. Light photo work may be possible, but older processing hardware, 1080p resolution and the 16GB documented memory ceiling limit headroom. Video editing is best kept to modest or legacy projects. The i7 label does not make this comparable to a current Core or Ryzen system.
Memory and storage
Two SO-DIMM sockets and a listed 16GB maximum make a memory upgrade possible, though access requires opening the all-in-one. Prefer a unit with at least 8GB; verify its installed modules and memory type before planning an upgrade. Lenovo’s ceiling is a platform specification, not a guarantee that every possible module combination will work.

A mechanical hard drive can be the main source of sluggish everyday response. If a compatible SATA SSD can be fitted, it is likely to make a more noticeable difference to booting and application launches than a small processor upgrade. The maintenance documentation includes storage replacement procedures, but fit, mounting hardware and cabling should be checked for the exact chassis before buying a drive. Check the installed drive’s health before purchase. The DVD±RW drive is useful for legacy discs, but it is not a reason to pay extra.

Integrated Intel graphics are suited to desktop tasks, ordinary video playback and older or undemanding games. The optional GeForce 820A and 840A configurations offer more graphics capability than integrated models, but they are not modern gaming machines. Results depend on the exact GPU, cooling, drivers and resolution; ask for the model rather than accepting “Nvidia graphics” as a complete specification. Do not assume the graphics hardware can be swapped like a standard desktop graphics card.
Ports, camera and other features
Lenovo lists three rear USB 2.0 ports, two side USB 3.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI output, a six-in-one card reader, microphone and headphone jacks. The card reader supports SD, SDHC, SDXC, MMC, MS and MS-Pro. HDMI input appears only on selected models; TV input and an optional DVB-T tuner are also configuration-dependent. HDMI output is not proof that the built-in screen can function as an external monitor.

Some configurations have a 1080p, 2-megapixel fixed-focus camera, while an Intel 3D camera was another option. Lenovo also lists a dual-array microphone and JBL speakers rated at 3 watts × 2, with Dolby Home Theater support. Keyboards and mice could be USB or 2.4GHz wireless; an infrared remote was an option for TV-equipped models. Check the actual unit and included peripherals instead of assuming any of these features are present.

Memory, storage, optical drive, Wi-Fi card, fan and CPU appear in maintenance procedures, so the machine is not sealed against all service. But reaching internal components involves disassembly. Lenovo’s maintenance procedure for removing the middle cover illustrates the difference from a tower PC, where many parts are accessible without taking apart the display assembly. A RAM or storage service may be realistic for a careful owner; major board or display work can be more involved and uneconomical.
An all-in-one makes the screen, computer, power hardware and stand part of one ownership decision. A display or motherboard fault can make the whole device costly to restore, and parts must match the machine’s configuration. Lenovo’s Encompass parts catalog provides a lookup route for at least one touch configuration, but availability and compatibility vary. Check by machine type and serial number before sourcing parts. Lenovo’s F0AU support page identifies the product family.

Is a used B50-30 worth buying?
There is no supported single “fair price” for this aging model: the available pricing evidence does not establish current market value. Compare the seller’s asking price with the exact configuration, condition, return terms and cost of any necessary SSD, RAM or missing equipment. Do not use the historical 2015 review-era price as a present-day valuation. A newer refurbished all-in-one, mini PC with a separate monitor, small-form-factor desktop, or laptop plus monitor may offer better performance and support life. Compare total cost, support, repairability and upgrade options—not screen size alone.
Configurations to seek
- Prefer a Core i5 or i7 with 8GB or 16GB of RAM and an SSD, if the price reflects its age.
- Consider Nvidia graphics only for older or light games or specific legacy workloads, not as proof it is a gaming PC.
- Choose a non-touch model if touch is unneeded and it costs less.
- Prioritize a clean, working display, intact stand, healthy drive and included power equipment over bundled legacy extras.
Warning signs
- A listing that says only “Core i7” or “Nvidia” without exact model numbers, RAM, storage and graphics details.
- A slow or failing hard drive, only 4GB of RAM, or a price that leaves no room for likely upgrades.
- Cracked, yellowed, scratched or flickering screen; dead touch layer on a touch model; broken stand or missing power components.
- Drive errors, overheating, fan problems, nonworking ports, unknown BIOS password, or unclear OS activation.
Inspection checklist
- Ask for the exact machine type/model, CPU, RAM capacity and module arrangement, storage type, GPU, touch status and operating-system version.
- Request display photos on white, black and gray backgrounds; inspect for dead pixels, backlight problems, flicker and scratches.
- Confirm the stand and power lead are included; verify the BIOS is not password-locked.
- Test webcam, microphone, speakers, optical drive, card reader, every USB port, HDMI connections, Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Bluetooth.
- Request a storage-health report and confirm whether the OS is activated. A drive replacement can also leave Windows activation or recovery issues.
The B50-30 is AC-powered; it is a desktop, not a laptop, and has no battery-backed portable operation to rely on.
Operating-system support needs a separate check
Lenovo’s platform sheet lists Windows 8.1 64-bit as an original preload; that is a historical factory specification, not confirmation of current security support or eligibility for a newer Windows release. The documentation cited here does not establish the machine’s present Microsoft support status. Before buying for regular internet-connected use, verify current OS support and compatibility against the exact hardware. A Linux installation may suit a buyer comfortable checking device and driver support, but compatibility should not be assumed from the model name alone.

The B50-30 was a capable, feature-rich all-in-one in its time, especially in the reviewed Core i7, 12GB, discrete-Nvidia configuration. Today it is best treated as a conditional used purchase: a clean i5 or i7 system with adequate RAM and an SSD can suit basic office, web, media or legacy use at a suitably low price. A slow Pentium or i3 HDD-only model, a damaged display, missing stand or unclear specification is much harder to justify. The original promise of “beautiful, powerful and affordable” describes a 2015 proposition, not a current buying verdict.
