Incus and PGSTY SILO can both help you learn S3-style object storage, but they play different roles. Incus can provide S3-protocol buckets backed by its documented storage options; SILO is a separate S3-compatible server that you deploy and operate independently. The official documentation reviewed does not establish SILO as an Incus storage driver or describe an Incus-managed SILO integration.

How does Incus storage work?

Incus distinguishes storage pools, storage volumes, and storage buckets. Pools provide storage for volumes, which can hold items such as images and instances. Buckets expose object storage through the S3 protocol. An application accesses a bucket using its URL and credentials; unlike a custom storage volume, a bucket is not attached to an instance as a disk. See the Incus storage documentation.

Incus documents local bucket backends using dir, btrfs, lvm, or zfs, as well as the cephobject storage driver. Its documentation describes Ceph as an independent cluster that must be set up separately. It does not list SILO as a native Incus storage backend.

How do I use S3 storage with Incus?

Choose a documented Incus bucket backend, create the bucket through Incus, and configure an S3-compatible client with the bucket endpoint and access credentials. The exact setup depends on the chosen backend and your Incus configuration; consult the storage documentation for current commands and options.

UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
  • The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
  • Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
  • Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

If your goal is for an application running in an Incus instance to use an independently operated S3-compatible service, configure that application with the service’s endpoint and credentials if it supports custom S3 endpoints. That is application-level access, not Incus provisioning or managing the external service.

Can Incus use MinIO or SILO?

The official Incus documentation reviewed does not describe a native MinIO or SILO storage driver, nor an Incus-managed SILO integration. PGSTY SILO is a separate S3-compatible object-storage server maintained as a MinIO fork. Its project states that it is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by MinIO, Inc.; see the SILO project.

Applications that support S3-compatible endpoints may be configured to connect to SILO, but this does not make SILO an Incus storage pool or bucket backend. Confirm the client’s endpoint and compatibility requirements with its own documentation and test the intended operations in your environment.

Are Incus storage buckets replicated across a cluster?

Not when using a local bucket backend. In an Incus cluster, a local bucket belongs to one member and is not replicated; its S3 API is available through the member that stores it. Incus can forward management operations to that member, but this does not make the bucket highly available across the cluster. Incus identifies Ceph Object as the option for highly available object storage across cluster members, with its S3 API available through any member. See Incus storage documentation and Incus bucket documentation.

That distinction is about architecture, not a performance ranking. A local bucket may suit a learning setup or a workload whose availability requirements fit one member; a clustered service requires an explicit design for replication, failure domains, and recovery.

What are the SILO deployment options?

SILO’s installation documentation lists containers, Kubernetes, native packages, standalone binaries, and Ansible-based deployment paths. The download page identifies server release RELEASE.2026-09-16T00-00-00Z, dated September 16, 2026. Release information can change, so check the SILO download page and installation documentation for the version available when you deploy. For production, pin a tested release or image digest rather than depending on a floating tag.

SILO describes three deployment topologies. Their failure tolerance differs, so choose based on the failures your service must withstand—not merely the number of drives you have.

Is SILO’s container quickstart suitable for production?

No. The SILO container guide covers single-node, single-drive and single-node, multi-drive deployments for development or evaluation. It explicitly does not define a production multi-node topology or an upgrade contract for container orchestrators. Use a documented, tested deployment workflow for production and validate it in the target environment. The container guide is the reference for its scope and persistent-storage examples.

Before serving important data, plan and test the whole operating path:

  • Use TLS and unique credentials rather than reusing sample or shared secrets.
  • Use persistent storage and verify that data survives the container or process lifecycle you expect.
  • Map nodes and drives to real failure domains; adding multiple drives to one host does not protect against loss of that host.
  • Maintain backups independent of the SILO deployment and test restoration, not just backup creation.
  • Test network behavior, upgrades, and recovery procedures in the target environment before relying on them.

SILO’s documentation says its in-place self-update is disabled. Its archived MinIO Kubernetes Operator version 7.1.1 is described as a frozen compatibility baseline, not a guarantee of ongoing upstream maintenance. Verify that baseline against your Kubernetes distribution before depending on it; see the installation documentation.

Which path should you choose for learning?

Option What it gives you Main trade-off
Incus local bucket An S3-protocol bucket managed through Incus, backed by a documented local driver: dir, btrfs, lvm, or zfs. In a cluster, it belongs to one member and is not replicated.
Incus Ceph Object An Incus-documented object-storage option for high availability across cluster members. Requires a separately set up Ceph cluster; it is not SILO.
Separately operated SILO A standalone S3-compatible service with documented deployment methods and topologies. You operate its security, persistence, backups, recovery, and failure-domain design separately; the reviewed sources do not document native Incus management.

For an initial S3 learning exercise, an Incus local bucket can teach how clients use bucket endpoints and credentials without adding another service. To learn about a dedicated object-storage server, deploy SILO separately and begin with an evaluation topology. Move toward multi-node design only when you are prepared to test its operational and recovery requirements. For Incus cluster-wide availability, follow the documented Ceph Object path rather than assuming a local bucket or SILO integration provides it.
