Layoutit Grid is a browser-based CSS Grid generator that lets you adjust a layout visually and copy the resulting HTML and CSS. It is most useful as a learning loop: make a small change on the canvas, identify the declaration that changed, and then verify the idea in a conceptual guide such as MDN. The generated snippet is a starting point, not proof that a layout meets every responsive, accessibility, or production requirement.
What Layoutit Grid helps you learn
CSS Grid is a two-dimensional layout system. Instead of arranging items along only one axis, it defines rows and columns and places content within that shared structure.
Layoutit turns that model into an interactive diagram. You can see tracks (rows or columns), grid lines (the boundaries around tracks), cells (the individual row-column intersections), areas (named or grouped regions), and gutters (the spaces between tracks). Changing the visual arrangement gives you an immediate way to connect those terms with CSS declarations.

How to use Layoutit Grid as a learning exercise
- Start with a deliberately small layout. Begin with a few items, such as a header, navigation, main content, sidebar, and footer. A small grid makes each declaration easier to identify.
- Adjust rows and columns. Use the generator’s explicit-grid controls to change the number and arrangement of tracks. Observe how the diagram and emitted CSS change together.
- Experiment with gaps. Set row and column gaps separately when the interface exposes them. A gap is a gutter between tracks; it is different from padding inside a grid item or a margin outside it.
- Place items deliberately. Use the placement controls to move an item to a different row, column, or span. Compare the visual move with declarations such as grid-column and grid-row in the generated CSS.
- Label or define areas when appropriate. An area-based layout can make a page structure easier to read. Check how area names map to grid-template-areas and how each item is assigned to an area.
- Inspect both output panels. Copy the generated HTML and CSS, but read them line by line. Identify the grid container, its tracks, gaps, placements, and any implicit tracks before adapting the code.
- Rebuild one change by hand. After making a visual adjustment, edit the copied CSS yourself and see whether you can reproduce the same result. This prevents the tool from becoming a code-copying shortcut.
Explicit and implicit grids: the distinction to watch
Explicit grid
The explicit grid is the structure you declare directly, commonly with grid-template-columns and grid-template-rows. Layoutit exposes controls for this part of the model, so it is a convenient place to see how adding or resizing tracks changes available cells.
Implicit grid
When items require positions beyond the tracks you explicitly declared, CSS can create implicit rows or columns. The generator’s implicit-grid controls help you explore that behavior. Inspect the emitted rules and compare them with properties such as grid-auto-rows, grid-auto-columns, and grid-auto-flow where they appear.

Do not assume that a visually acceptable arrangement explains itself. Ask which tracks are explicit, which were created automatically, and what happens when content or item count changes.

- Which element has display: grid?
- How many explicit columns and rows are defined, and with what units?
- Are gaps set with row-gap and column-gap, or with the shorthand gap?
- Are items positioned by numbered lines, spans, or named areas?
- Does the code create implicit tracks when content grows?
- Are fixed sizes, minimums, and flexible tracks appropriate for the content you actually have?
- What changes will be needed at your intended breakpoints?
Rewrite names and values to match your application, remove declarations you do not understand, and test the result with your real content. A generator shows the code for the arrangement you made; it does not establish that the arrangement is robust in every viewport or state.
Layoutit Grid and MDN have different jobs

A productive sequence is to experiment in Layoutit, then use MDN to explain what you saw. Return to the generator with a specific question—such as how an item spans two tracks or how auto-placement fills cells—rather than clicking through controls without a hypothesis.

Where the generator fits in a real project
Layoutit can help you turn a rough visual design into an initial Grid structure and communicate that structure to another developer. The live interface currently presents controls for explicit and implicit grids, placement, row and column gaps, an area box, and generated HTML/CSS.

You still need to choose semantic HTML, account for content that changes length, define responsive behavior, and check the result in the browsers and assistive-technology contexts relevant to your project. A practical mini-project
Build a dashboard skeleton
- Create a grid with a top header, a narrow navigation column, a flexible main column, and a footer row.
- Set a visible gap so the gutter is easy to distinguish from item padding.
- Place the header and footer across the intended columns; place navigation and main content in their own cells.
- Try the same arrangement with named areas and compare the readability of the generated CSS.
- Add or remove an item to see whether the explicit grid is sufficient or whether implicit tracks appear.
- Copy the output into a small test page, replace placeholder text with content of different lengths, and then add the media-query behavior your design needs.
The point of the exercise is not the dashboard itself. It is learning to predict how a visual edit maps to tracks, lines, placement, and area declarations.
What Layoutit Grid is—and is not
- It is: a visual CSS Grid generator, a fast way to experiment, and a source of readable starter code.
- It is not: a replacement for understanding the Grid layout model or for reviewing responsive and semantic decisions.
Leniolabs announced version 2 on June 8, 2021, describing support for most CSS Grid specification features at that release. That announcement is historical context, not a guarantee that the current interface covers every feature or workflow you may need; interface controls can change.
Bottom line
Use Layoutit Grid to draw a small layout, change one thing at a time, and trace each visual change to the emitted CSS. Pair that experimentation with MDN’s conceptual explanations, then edit and test the code yourself. You will learn more—and ship safer CSS—when the generator is a guide to the Grid model rather than a substitute for it.
