Kunlun Glass is Huawei’s branded nano-microcrystalline cover-glass technology, designed to improve resistance to drops and impacts. It is not unbreakable. Huawei says a Kunlun Glass version of the Mate 50 had up to 10 times the overall drop resistance of an ordinary-glass version in Huawei laboratory testing. That is a specific comparison—not proof that every Kunlun-equipped phone is ten times stronger than every rival screen. The claim that Kunlun Glass was featured “on CCTV” also needs a programme, date, or official broadcast record: the available sources do not identify one.
What is Kunlun Glass?
Kunlun Glass is Huawei’s name for a cover-glass technology used on selected phones. Huawei describes it as nano-microcrystalline glass: high-strength nanocrystals are grown within the glass structure to reinforce it. Huawei uses “10 quadrillion-level” to describe the number of strong nanocrystals; that is Huawei’s technical description, not an independently verified count in the sources available here. Huawei’s Kunlun Glass information and service page also cautions that devices can still be damaged by drops, impacts, or collisions.
The practical aim is better toughness against certain impacts—not immunity to damage. A phone screen may be less likely to crack in a drop without being dramatically more resistant to scratches. Nor does the name mean that the entire phone is made of Kunlun Glass: it refers to a particular glass component, usually the cover over a display, and exact configurations vary by model.

Hardness, toughness, and drop resistance are not the same
- Hardness describes resistance to surface scratching and wear.
- Toughness describes how well a material absorbs energy before cracking.
- Strength concerns resistance to deformation or fracture under load.
- Drop resistance is a whole-device outcome. Glass, display layers, frame, adhesive, corners, impact angle, landing surface, and case can all affect it.
Those distinctions matter because a phone that survives a face-down drop may fail when it lands on a corner or edge. Sand and grit can scratch glass even when it has good impact performance. Huawei’s available claims emphasize drop and impact resistance; they do not establish that Kunlun Glass is scratch-proof.

What Huawei’s “10 times” claim actually says
Huawei’s prominent figure is up to 10 times the whole-phone drop resistance for a Kunlun Glass version of the Mate 50 compared with an ordinary-glass Mate 50 version, according to Huawei laboratory testing. Huawei’s wording does not mean the glass itself has ten times the tensile strength, that the phone can survive a drop from ten times the height, or that it will survive ten drops for every one an ordinary-glass phone survives.
It is also not a universal result for every Huawei phone carrying the Kunlun name. Huawei says that models can use different processes and materials, so performance varies by device. The figure should be read as a model-specific, laboratory comparison—not a guarantee of what will happen in a particular real-world fall. Huawei’s UK marketing material also promotes “10x more drop-resistant” Kunlun Glass for named products, but promotional shorthand should not be mistaken for a controlled head-to-head comparison against every other glass generation.
What does the SGS five-star claim mean?
Huawei says Kunlun Glass received a Swiss SGS five-star glass drop-resistance certification. That is a certification claim attributed to Huawei; it is not the same as SGS certifying a phone as unbreakable, and “five-star” should not be treated as a universal ranking against every smartphone cover glass.

The Huawei pages cited here do not provide the full protocol—such as the precise test configuration, drop height, surface, sample size, or pass threshold—so the rating cannot be used by itself to compare Kunlun Glass with another product. A certification applies to a defined test and scope, not every possible fall or every device marketed with a related technology.
Which Huawei phones have Kunlun Glass?
There is no single global list that should be applied to every country, configuration, or generation. Factory-installed glass, a later Kunlun variant, and eligibility for a glass replacement or upgrade programme are separate questions. Check the exact model and regional version against Huawei’s local product and service information.

Foldables need extra care when reading specifications. Huawei’s China service page says the listed activity for the Mate X6, Mate X5, and Mate X3 covers the outer screen’s cover glass, not the flexible inner display. Outer cover-glass damage, flexible-panel damage, hinge damage, and debris-related problems are different issues; do not assume that one glass label describes every display surface or the whole device.

Kunlun Glass and Corning Gorilla Glass are competing branded cover-glass technologies, but the evidence here does not establish a universal winner. Huawei’s Mate 50 “10 times” figure compares two Mate 50 versions under Huawei’s stated laboratory testing; it is not a tenfold claim against Gorilla Glass. TechInsights’ P60 teardown reports Kunlun Glass on the P60 series and discusses Huawei’s inability to use Gorilla Glass for the display cover in that context. The teardown also cautions that the difference is difficult to assess without controlled comparative stress testing.
A fair comparison would need the exact glass and phone models, equivalent cases or no cases, controlled drop heights and surfaces, specified impact orientations, enough samples, and consistent inspection after each drop. A result for one phone design cannot automatically be transferred to a different device: frame geometry, adhesive, screen shape, and other parts of the assembly matter.

Was Kunlun Glass really featured on CCTV?
“CCTV” here would mean China Central Television, but an attribution needs a traceable broadcast. The available sources do not identify a specific CCTV programme, channel segment, broadcast date, transcript, or official CCTV page about Kunlun Glass. Huawei’s product and support pages document Huawei’s own descriptions and claims; they do not verify that CCTV aired or endorsed a report.
Before repeating “on CCTV” as fact, look for at least one primary record: a CCTV.com page, the programme and channel name, an original broadcast date, an archived programme listing, an official CCTV social-media upload, or an authenticated clip or transcript. Then distinguish what the programme actually did: reporting Huawei’s claims is not the same as independently testing the material. Even genuine television coverage would not, by itself, substitute for a published test protocol.
Verdict on the attribution: the claim that Kunlun Glass was featured on CCTV is unverified unless a specific original CCTV item can be identified. That does not disprove that a broadcast exists; it means the attribution should not be presented as established on the evidence linked here.

Does Kunlun Glass mean you can skip a case or screen protector?
No. A case remains useful because a phone’s vulnerable parts extend beyond its display: corners, frame edges, rear panel, and camera modules can take the impact. Huawei itself advises owners to avoid drops and collisions even on Kunlun-equipped devices. A case with raised edges and reinforced corners can add protection, though it cannot guarantee survival.
A screen protector can help limit cosmetic wear and may absorb some impact, but it cannot ensure that the underlying display survives a severe fall. On curved screens, some protectors lift at the edges or conflict with a case; poorly fitted options may also affect touch response or an under-display fingerprint reader. Check compatibility with the exact model. Avoid carrying a phone where sand, grit, or other hard particles can rub against the screen.
Repair and replacement: check the exact programme before paying
Huawei has region-specific Kunlun glass repair or upgrade information. The China page lists 55 eligible models and shows a service price from RMB 469; it states a programme period of January 1 through December 31, 2026, and says more than 600 authorized service centres participate. These are China programme details, not worldwide prices or availability. The Malaysia page lists model-dependent prices from RM299 to RM599. Prices, participating locations, eligibility, and stock can change, so confirm them directly with Huawei in your country before arranging service.

It also says the replaced cover glass has a 90-day warranty or the remaining device warranty, whichever is longer. Those are Malaysia-specific terms; do not assume they apply in another market. A crack that reaches or damages the active display may require more than cover-glass replacement.
Before booking, identify the exact model and regional variant, ask whether the service replaces only the outer cover glass or the complete display assembly, and check whether the frame, adhesive, or seals are also affected. A prior third-party repair, bent chassis, liquid damage, or unavailable parts may make a device ineligible. For a foldable, ask specifically whether the quote concerns the outer cover glass, inner flexible display, or another component. Use Huawei’s China service page or Malaysia service page only if those are your markets; they are not evidence of a local programme elsewhere.
What to check before buying a phone advertised with Kunlun Glass
- Verify the exact model and market version. Ask whether Kunlun Glass is factory-installed on that configuration rather than relying on a generic family name or seller listing.
- Look for model-specific durability evidence. Do not transfer the Mate 50 comparison figure to another model.
- Check local repair access. Confirm whether authorized replacement is available, the conditions, likely cost, and parts availability where you live.
- Consider screen shape and the rest of the device. Curved edges, camera protrusions, rear materials, frame, and—in foldables—the hinge and flexible display all affect practical durability.
- Plan protection around how you use the phone. A compatible case and, if useful, a well-fitted protector can reduce everyday risks, but neither makes a phone drop-proof.
The bottom line
Kunlun Glass is a real Huawei-branded cover-glass technology that Huawei describes as nano-microcrystalline and designed to improve drop resistance. Huawei’s Mate 50 comparison supports a substantial claim under its own laboratory conditions, but it is not a universal “ten times stronger” result, a scratch-proof guarantee, or proof of an unbreakable phone. The CCTV wording remains unverified without a specific original broadcast record. Treat Kunlun as a potential durability advantage, not permission to go without protection.
