Krita is a genuinely free, open-source desktop graphics editor built primarily for digital painting. It is an excellent choice for illustration, concept art, comics, texture work, storyboards, and frame-by-frame 2D animation. Commercial artists can use it without paying a license fee.
Its important limitation is equally clear: Krita is not a universal Photoshop replacement. It is painting-focused rather than primarily designed for raw photography, advanced retouching, page layout, vector design, or large collaborative studio pipelines.
What is Krita?
Krita is a free and open-source raster graphics application developed within the KDE/Krita ecosystem. Its core workflow revolves around a canvas, customizable brushes, layers, masks, color management, and pen input.

Krita is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, and compatible Android devices. Official download information does not list iPhone or iPad support. Android builds may not provide the same experience as the desktop versions, particularly for plugins, shortcuts, storage, and interface space.

Is Krita really free?
Yes. The direct desktop download is free, and Krita is licensed under the GNU General Public License version 3. Commercial use of artwork created with Krita is permitted. Schools, freelancers, and companies can install and use the application without purchasing a subscription.
Krita is also sold through stores such as the Microsoft Store, Steam, Epic Games Store, and Mac App Store. These paid editions primarily provide a store-managed distribution method and a way to support development; they do not mean that the official direct download requires payment.
There is an important distinction between using Krita and redistributing Krita. GPL rights permit modification and redistribution only when the license obligations are followed. Krita’s trademark rules also apply. Selling an unchanged copy under another name is not automatically allowed simply because the source code is open.

Current version and safe download
Krita’s official pages can show different release branches or lag behind one another. The release information available for this article shows 5.3.x and 6.0.x releases on the official homepage, while another official download page identifies an earlier 5.3.x build as stable. Rather than treating one number as universal, check the live official download page for the operating system and release channel you need.
Use this installation path:
- Open Krita’s official download page.
- Select your operating system and architecture.
- Choose the stable release unless you specifically need a testing or nightly build.
- Install or extract Krita.
- Create a small test document and verify painting, saving, and tablet pressure.
- Save an editable test project in Krita’s native
.kraformat.
Avoid download portals that bundle installers. When checksums are provided, compare the downloaded file with the published SHA-256 or SHA-1 value. Unofficial plugins, modified builds, and brush packs should be treated as separate software and assessed independently.

What Krita can do
Painting and illustration
Krita includes multiple brush engines, customizable presets, pressure-sensitive tablet input, stabilizers, assistants, canvas rotation, canvas mirroring, and wraparound mode. Its layer system supports groups, blending modes, transparency controls, masks, and non-destructive workflow elements.
The interface is highly configurable. You can rearrange dockers, create workspaces, change shortcuts, and tune tablet behavior. This flexibility suits experienced artists, but beginners may initially find the number of controls overwhelming.
Comics and line art
Krita is well suited to comic and manga work. Perspective tools, assistants, panel-oriented workflows, templates, reusable resources, and halftone or screentone-style techniques help with sequential art and clean line work.
Krita can open and save PSD files, which is useful when exchanging layered artwork. Compatibility is not perfect: complex masks, blending modes, text behavior, effects, and application-specific features may not reproduce exactly. Test a representative client file before committing to a migration.
Animation
Krita includes frame-by-frame 2D animation tools, an animation timeline, and onion-skin features. It is a practical choice for hand-drawn sequences, animated sketches, short clips, and traditional-style animation.

It is not a complete replacement for a full production pipeline. Advanced compositing, 3D, video editing, asset management, and production tracking may require other applications. Export options and encoder requirements can vary by version and operating system, so consult the current documentation for the version installed.

Color and print
Krita supports RGB and CMYK workflows, ICC color profiles, and high-bit-depth painting. Official feature information also discusses HDR-related capabilities, but the exact experience can vary by Krita branch, operating system, display hardware, graphics stack, and color-management environment.
For print, use the profile supplied by your printer or production house. A file that looks correct on one uncalibrated display may not reproduce accurately on paper. Confirm the required color model, bit depth, profile, and export format before delivery.
Plugins, scripts, and resources
Plugins, scripts, brush packs, templates, and other community resources can extend Krita. They are not all part of the core application. Check their source, maintenance status, compatibility, and permissions before installing them, especially on production machines.

System requirements and real-world performance
The cited official requirements list at least 4 GB of RAM, with 16 GB recommended, graphics support for OpenGL 3.0 or higher or Direct3D 11, and an operating-system-compatible graphics tablet where applicable. Minimum requirements are not performance guarantees.
Performance depends heavily on:
- Canvas dimensions and resolution
- Color depth and profile
- Number of layers, masks, and frames
- Brush-engine complexity and brush size
- Animation length
- Available RAM and scratch storage
- Graphics-driver quality
- Display resolution and scaling
A modest computer may handle sketches and small illustrations comfortably but struggle with huge canvases, high-bit-depth files, many large layers, or complex animation projects.
A sensible beginner workflow
- Open Krita and create a new document.
- Choose pixel dimensions and resolution for the intended output.
- Select the required color model and depth.
- Keep the sketch, line art, colors, and effects on separate layers.
- Save the editable project as
.kra. - Export a copy to PNG, JPEG, TIFF, PSD, or another suitable delivery format.
Do not use JPEG as your only working file for layered art. JPEG is generally an export format and does not preserve Krita’s layer structure. Keep the .kra project, then export flattened copies when required.

Setting up a drawing tablet
First confirm that the tablet works in the operating system. Then choose the appropriate tablet input API in Krita where available, test pressure with a pressure-sensitive brush, and check Windows Ink or equivalent driver settings if pressure is missing. Restart Krita after changing driver modes.

Common problems and fixes

Where Krita is strongest
- Digital painting: Brush customization, pressure input, stabilizers, layers, and masks make it a strong canvas-centered art tool.
- Concept art: Large canvases, flexible brushes, assistants, and customizable workspaces suit exploratory design.
- Comics: Line-art tools, perspective assistance, templates, panels, and halftone techniques support sequential art.
- Hand-drawn animation: The timeline and onion skinning are useful for short frame-by-frame sequences.
- Linux creative work: Krita provides a capable native option where many commercial creative tools have limited support.
- Education and organizations: The free, open-source license avoids per-seat subscription costs and allows inspection and modification under the GPL.
Where Krita falls short
Krita includes image-editing capabilities, but photography is not its central design priority. Raw development, catalog management, advanced non-destructive retouching, and photography automation may be better handled by Photoshop, Affinity Photo, darktable, or RawTherapee.
It is also not primarily a vector illustration or page-layout application. Brochures, books, reports, complex typography, and vector-heavy designs are better suited to dedicated tools such as Inkscape, Affinity Designer, or a layout application.
For animation, Krita is strongest at drawn frame-by-frame work, not full production management, 3D, advanced compositing, or video editing. Large studio pipelines may also require stronger asset management, collaboration infrastructure, and standardized interchange than Krita alone provides.

Krita versus Photoshop
Photoshop covers a broader mix of photography, retouching, commercial design, Adobe integration, and established client workflows. Krita is the better fit when painting is the priority and free, open-source licensing matters. Krita can replace Photoshop for some illustration workflows, but not every photography, design, or studio-pipeline use case.

Krita versus GIMP
Both are free and open source. GIMP is commonly used as a general image-manipulation and photo-editing application, while Krita is more focused on brush-based painting, illustration, comics, and animation. The distinction is about workflow emphasis, not an absolute capability boundary. See gimp.org.
Krita versus Affinity
Affinity products are commercial tools aimed at photo, vector, and layout work. They may be preferable when you want a polished multi-application design suite and do not require open-source licensing or Linux support. Verify current products and pricing at affinity.serif.com.

Who should use Krita?
Choose Krita if your main work is digital painting, concept art, comics, illustration, texture painting, storyboards, or short hand-drawn animation—and you value free, open-source software.
Choose another application if photography, page layout, vector design, advanced typography, complex compositing, or Adobe-specific collaboration dominates your work.
Use Krita alongside another application when painting is one part of a wider workflow. For many artists, that is the most practical answer: Krita for drawing and painting, plus a separate tool for photography, layout, vector work, or video.
