The original KissAnime is not available in 2021 or today. KissAnime.ru and KissManga went offline permanently on August 14–15, 2020, after the operators said copyright owners had taken down the sites’ files. A page titled “KissAnime – Watch Anime Online English Subtitles – 2021” is therefore best understood as a historical or stale search result—not proof that an official KissAnime service operated during 2021.
If you are looking for anime with English subtitles, avoid domains that merely reuse the KissAnime name. They are not verified continuations of the original service. Licensed platforms such as Crunchyroll and, where available, HIDIVE are safer places to start.

What KissAnime was
KissAnime was a formerly prominent free anime-streaming website. Contemporary reporting widely described KissAnime as an unauthorized anime-piracy service, although exact claims about its catalog size or audience were estimates rather than audited first-party figures. Its appeal was especially strong in regions where particular anime titles were difficult to find through licensed services.

That popularity does not mean every title was legally available through the site. Copyright authorization depends on the rights held for a specific work, territory, and distribution method.
Did KissAnime operate in 2021?
No reliable evidence in the available reporting shows that the original KissAnime service relaunched in 2021. The original KissAnime.ru service had already closed in August 2020.
Search results can still show the phrase “KissAnime watch anime online English subtitles 2021” because old pages remain indexed, websites recycle search-oriented titles, and third-party domains use familiar branding to attract visitors. The year in a page title is not evidence that the original operators were running the service at that time.
Why did KissAnime shut down?
In August 2020, KissAnime displayed a notice saying that copyright owners had taken down its files. KissAnime and KissManga were subsequently reported as permanently closed. Contemporaneous reporting connected the shutdown to copyright-holder pressure and enforcement.

It is safer not to reduce the closure to one unverified explanation, such as a particular Japanese law, studio lawsuit, or single court judgment. The strongest available report supports copyright-related action but does not establish one definitive legal proceeding as the sole cause.
Are current KissAnime websites official?
A website using “KissAnime,” “KissAnime TV,” “KissAnime RU,” “KissAnime Watch,” or similar wording should not automatically be treated as the original service. After the shutdown, unrelated domains and mirrors appeared or claimed to be official. Directory pages list multiple such domains, but those listings do not verify ownership, licensing, or continuity with the former operators.
The practical rule is simple: the original service closed, so a later domain using the name must prove its own legitimacy rather than inheriting it from the brand. Do not provide payment details, reuse an important password, install a browser extension, or download an APK, media player, codec, or “browser update” merely because a site claims to be a KissAnime successor.
Are KissAnime mirrors safe?
Not every clone can be declared malicious, but unofficial streaming domains carry elevated and difficult-to-verify risks. Common warning signs include:

- Prompts to install a browser update, codec, player, extension, or APK.

An ad blocker may reduce some nuisance advertising, but it does not establish that a site is licensed or safe. It also cannot protect an account if you enter a reused password into a phishing form.
If you already visited a clone
- Close the tab and do not install anything the site offered.
- Remove notification permissions and unfamiliar browser extensions.
- Run a reputable security scan on the device.
- Change any password entered on the site, especially if you reused it elsewhere.
- Review bank, payment, and streaming-account activity if you entered financial details.
- Delete downloaded APKs, players, codecs, or extensions that came from the page.
Is watching a KissAnime clone legal?
The answer depends on the country, the rights involved, and the specific act. Unauthorized uploading, hosting, linking, or distributing copyrighted anime is legally risky. Whether an individual viewer incurs liability merely by streaming a particular unauthorized source varies by jurisdiction and circumstance.
That uncertainty is not a reason to recommend clone sites. The safest general advice is to watch through a licensed service, official distributor, library service, or authorized ad-supported channel. A VPN does not create viewing rights or guarantee access to a catalog licensed for another territory.

Crunchyroll: the closest mainstream substitute
Crunchyroll is the most natural starting point for a former KissAnime user who wants a large anime-focused catalog, subtitles, dubbed releases, and current shows through a recognizable licensed distributor. It does not have every anime, and the available subtitle tracks, dubs, simulcasts, films, and older titles depend on your country.

HIDIVE: cheaper, but more limited
HIDIVE can complement Crunchyroll when you are looking for a particular exclusive, older title, or English dub. Its official U.S. help page lists $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year. It also offers a seven-day first-time free trial that automatically converts to a paid membership unless canceled.

HIDIVE is not available everywhere. Its support documentation confirms that the service has withdrawn from some countries, so check regional eligibility before relying on it. A lower price is useful only if the service carries the title you want and operates in your location.
What changed after 2021?
Some older “KissAnime alternatives” lists are now misleading because they recommend Funimation as if it were still a separate current service. Sony completed its acquisition of Crunchyroll on August 9, 2021, and the two services subsequently moved toward consolidation. The Funimation website and app ended service on April 2, 2024, with users directed toward Crunchyroll.
For a current 2026 decision, treat Funimation-only recommendations as outdated. Check Crunchyroll and other currently operating licensed services instead.

- Search for the exact title first. Do not subscribe based only on a platform’s general reputation.
- Confirm your country. Licensing is territory-specific, and a show available in the U.S. may not be available elsewhere.
- Check subtitles and dubs. Look for the language track you actually need, rather than assuming every title has both.
- Compare monthly and annual billing. Include taxes and check whether an introductory or annual price is temporary.
- Read trial terms. HIDIVE’s listed trial automatically converts to paid service unless canceled.
- Check devices. Confirm browser, phone, smart-TV, console, or streaming-device support before paying.
- Review downloads and account features. Offline viewing and simultaneous streams are plan-specific, not universal.
- Prefer transparent operators. Clear billing, cancellation, privacy, and customer-support policies are meaningful advantages over anonymous mirrors.
Bottom line
The original KissAnime disappeared permanently in August 2020, so “KissAnime 2021” refers to a stale or historical page—not a current official streaming service. Later domains using the name are unverified and may expose viewers to legal uncertainty, aggressive advertising, phishing, unwanted downloads, and poor privacy practices.
For legitimate English-subtitled anime, start by checking Crunchyroll for broad coverage, HIDIVE for selected complementary titles where available, and official free or library-based options for no-cost viewing.
