No—the Kindle Colorsoft’s system-wide Dark Mode is not a Signature Edition exclusive. Amazon added it in firmware 5.19.4, released in April 2026, for the Colorsoft family. The standard 16GB Colorsoft should receive it through the applicable rollout, so Dark Mode alone is not a reason to pay more for the 32GB Signature Edition.
What feature caused the confusion?
The feature most likely described as the “long-awaited” Kindle upgrade is system-wide Dark Mode: a setting that changes interface surfaces such as Home, Library and Settings to a dark color scheme. Amazon’s Colorsoft firmware notes list Dark Mode in software version 5.19.4, released in April 2026.
That is different from the older Page Color option. Page Color changes the page while you are reading but does not turn the Home screen, Library, Store or Settings dark. Amazon’s Kindle Colorsoft User Guide documents it as an in-book feature.
Which Colorsoft models support system-wide Dark Mode?

Amazon’s announcement describes Dark Mode for Kindle Colorsoft and Kindle Scribe Colorsoft. Independent reporting says the rollout included the standard Colorsoft, Signature Edition and Scribe Colorsoft. The Kids model is listed here separately because the available announcement does not clearly enumerate it.

How to turn on Dark Mode
Quick Actions
- From the Home screen or another system screen, swipe down from the top.
- Tap Dark Mode.
Settings
- Open Settings.
- Select Screen and Brightness.
- Select Appearance.
- Tap Dark Mode.
Labels can vary slightly with language, region or software version. These paths come from Amazon’s firmware release notes.
Required software and delayed rollouts
Check that the Kindle is running version 5.19.4 or later. Version 5.19.5, released in June 2026, added bookmarks in Page Flip View plus performance and bug fixes; it is not the update that initially introduced Dark Mode.

Amazon can enable features in stages. A Kindle may therefore have the correct firmware while the Dark Mode control is still missing for several days. WIRED reported this rollout behavior in its coverage of Colorsoft Dark Mode.
If the control is missing
- Confirm that the device is a supported Colorsoft-family model.
- Check the installed software version in the device settings.
- Connect to Wi-Fi and leave the Kindle powered on.
- Restart the Kindle.
- Check for updates again.
- If the firmware is current, allow time for the staged feature activation.
- Use Amazon’s manual-update procedure only with a file explicitly intended for your exact model.
What Dark Mode does—and where it has limits
Interface and reading surfaces
System-wide Dark Mode is designed for low-light viewing and affects Kindle interface screens. It is not the same as reducing front-light brightness; you may still need to adjust the light manually. It also does not change the Colorsoft display’s underlying color-E Ink resolution.

Books, highlights and notebooks
Colorsoft Scribe notebook colors and colored ebook highlights are designed to remain colored when Dark Mode is enabled. Behavior can vary among purchased Kindle books, library loans and sideloaded documents, so do not assume every file will invert identically.
PDFs and imported documents
Dark Mode or Page Color can make some PDFs difficult to read or render unexpectedly. Amazon advises turning the feature off if a PDF does not display properly in its Dark Mode help page. Earlier reporting also found inconsistent Page Color behavior with some imported formats, including AZW3 files.

Amazon’s Colorsoft family announcement documents the hardware differences. Launch prices are historical, not guaranteed prices today. Amazon later listed the Signature Edition at $219.99 in a cited Prime Day 2026 promotion; that was a temporary sale price, not an everyday price. The charging dock is an additional purchase.
Is the Signature Edition worth paying more for?
Choose the standard Colorsoft when
- Dark Mode is your main reason for upgrading.
- 16GB is enough for your ebooks and occasional color content.
- You mainly want color covers, illustrations, comics or graphic novels.
- Wireless charging and automatic light adjustment are not important.
Choose the Signature Edition when
- You keep a large manga, comic, audiobook or graphic-heavy library.
- You want 32GB rather than 16GB.
- You value an auto-adjusting front light.
- Wireless charging is worth the device premium and the separately sold dock.
- A sale makes the price gap small enough to justify those hardware upgrades.
Do not buy the Signature Edition solely for Dark Mode. The software evidence indicates feature parity on that point; its premium is for storage, charging and lighting hardware.

Do not confuse Colorsoft with Scribe or Page Color
The Kindle Scribe Colorsoft is a larger notebook device, not simply a more expensive handheld Colorsoft. Reports about higher-capacity Scribe configurations, including a possible 64GB model, should not be used to judge the 16GB-versus-32GB handheld comparison. Likewise, Page Color remains the older in-book workaround and should not be presented as system-wide Dark Mode.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Firmware 5.19.4 brought system-wide Dark Mode to the Colorsoft line beyond the Signature Edition. The standard 16GB Colorsoft is the sensible choice if Dark Mode is the priority; buy the Signature Edition for 32GB, auto-adjusting light and wireless charging instead.
