An effective WordPress website is easy to understand, use, and read across devices; it also loads reliably for its intended audience. No single theme or plugin guarantees that result. Choose a theme that fits how you work, make layouts responsive, build accessibility into every page, and measure performance before adding optimizations.

Choose a theme for the site you need to build

A theme shapes both the site’s appearance and the way you manage its structure. WordPress offers two broad approaches, and the right one depends on the editing control and workflow you need.

Theme type How it works What to consider
Block theme Uses blocks for site areas such as navigation, headers, content, and footers. The Site Editor lets you work with templates and styles. Useful when you want block-based control over site-wide layouts and appearance. Responsive style overrides require WordPress 7.1 or later and a block theme.
Classic theme Uses PHP templates and commonly relies on the Customizer; it does not support the Site Editor in the same way. May suit a workflow or theme built around those established customization tools. Check the theme’s actual controls and templates before choosing.

Do not select a theme by its demo alone. Check whether it supports the page types your site needs, how its global styles and navigation work, and whether its maintenance workflow is practical for you. Preview it or try it on a test site before changing a live site. A theme’s presence in the official directory, or an “accessibility-ready” tag, is not a guarantee that it will be suitable, fast, or fully accessible for your finished site. WordPress documentation on block themes explains the distinction and the Site Editor workflow.

Make the layout work at different screen sizes

A page that looks good on a desktop can become cramped on a phone or difficult to use when someone enlarges text. Check the rendered site at narrow and wide viewport sizes, not just in the editor preview. Confirm that navigation remains usable, content fits without awkward horizontal scrolling, and important actions are easy to find.

WordPress 7.1 and later support responsive style overrides for block themes. The documented default ranges are Mobile at 480px and narrower, Tablet above 480px through 782px, and Default otherwise. A theme can customize those widths, so treat them as defaults rather than universal breakpoints. The editor can apply responsive overrides to settings such as typography, spacing, color, borders, dimensions, and layout. WordPress’s responsive styles guide describes the feature and its controls.

Use a clear type hierarchy so readers can scan headings, body text, and supporting information. Relative units such as em and rem can help text and spacing adapt when a visitor changes the browser’s default text size. Test with enlarged text as well as at the site’s usual display size. WordPress’s typography guide explains typography settings and relative units.

Build accessibility into the design

Accessibility affects whether people can perceive, understand, and operate a site. Use semantic structure and predictable interactions rather than treating accessibility as a visual polish step.

  • Use headings in a logical order and make link labels meaningful outside their surrounding paragraph.
  • Ensure keyboard users can reach and operate navigation, forms, and controls, with a visible focus indicator.
  • Provide labels for form fields, and make sure they remain understandable when a field is filled in.
  • Check text and control contrast, and never use color as the only way to communicate a status or instruction.
  • Allow text to be resized without clipping or breaking the layout.

WordPress states that its core software, WordPress.org websites, and official plugins are expected to conform to WCAG 2.2 Level AA. That statement does not certify every third-party theme or a site assembled from third-party components. WordPress also describes the “accessibility-ready” theme tag as a minimum set of theme-review standards, not proof of WCAG AA conformance. See the WordPress accessibility coding standards and its accessibility best practices for guidance.

Keep pages focused and avoid unnecessary weight

Design choices can affect how quickly a page appears and responds. Large images, custom fonts, carousels, popups, embeds, ads, analytics, social widgets, and plugins that make many network requests or database queries can all add cost. Color choices by themselves do not make a page faster; the assets and code used to present the design matter.

Use images at appropriate dimensions and avoid loading oversized media where a smaller asset will do. Be selective with carousels and widgets, keep heavy video away from the top of a page, and avoid content that loads late and shifts the layout. Remove plugins you do not use, and limit expensive widgets to the pages where they serve a purpose. WordPress 7.1 introduced browser-based image compression, resizing, and thumbnail processing, optional GIF-to-video conversion, more resilient uploads, and configurable speculative-loading defaults. These are platform features, not a promise that a particular site will meet performance targets. The WordPress 7.1 release announcement describes these version-specific changes.

Measure speed before choosing an optimization

Loading and interaction depend on more than the theme: front-end code, hosting, server response, network conditions, geography, hardware, and database work can all matter. Start by measuring the site and identifying where the delay occurs. PageSpeed Insights and WebPageTest can help investigate performance; lab tests provide controlled diagnostics, while field data reflects visits from real users when enough data is available.

Google’s Core Web Vitals cover three aspects of user experience:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how quickly the main visible content loads. Google web.dev defines good as 2.5 seconds or less and poor as more than 4 seconds.
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): how much visible content shifts unexpectedly while loading.
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how responsive the page feels to interactions. Google web.dev defines good as 200 milliseconds or less and poor as more than 500 milliseconds.

Values between the good and poor thresholds need improvement. PageSpeed Insights may show CrUX field data, which represents aggregate real-user experience over a 28-day view when the site has sufficient data. Use Core Web Vitals as diagnostics, not a guarantee of search rankings or business results, and do not treat a single perfect score as the only goal. Google web.dev’s business-owner guidance on Core Web Vitals explains the thresholds and field data.

If measurements point to a front-end issue, reduce unnecessary assets and requests. If server response or delivery is the constraint, a caching or optimization plugin may not solve the underlying hosting or backend problem. Tools can offer functions such as caching, compression, minification, or CDN delivery, but choose them for a diagnosed need, check compatibility, and measure the result rather than stacking plugins by feature count. WordPress’s performance lesson discusses common contributors to site speed and possible approaches.
