KB4567523 was a real Microsoft update for certain printing failures, but it was for Windows 10 version 2004, commonly called 20H1—not Windows 10 20H2. Released on June 18, 2020, it brought supported version-2004 systems to OS build 19041.331. Microsoft described it as a non-security quality update addressing print-spooler and application errors; it was not a universal printer fix.
What printer problem did KB4567523 address?
Microsoft said the update addressed failures affecting certain printers. A print job could fail, the print spooler could report an error or close unexpectedly, and the application sending the job could show an error, stop responding, or crash. Software-based printers, including Microsoft Print to PDF, could also be affected.
Microsoft did not identify a particular printer brand, model, connection type, or driver family. The update should therefore be treated as a repair for a specific Windows printing defect, not as a fix for every USB, wireless, network, driver, or hardware problem. Microsoft’s KB4567523 support page identifies the release as a non-security quality update for Windows 10 version 2004.

Was KB4567523 for Windows 10 20H1 or 20H2?
It was for Windows 10 version 2004, commonly called 20H1. The Microsoft support page lists version 2004 as the applicable Windows 10 release, and the Microsoft Update Catalog labels the client packages for Windows 10 Version 2004. The official documentation does not establish KB4567523 as a Windows 10 20H2 package.

That distinction matters when choosing an update: do not install this package on a 20H2 PC merely because a page describes the problem as affecting “20H1 and 20H2.” Check the version and build first. A system on a later release should use updates intended for that release rather than forcing an older package.
Check whether the update matches your Windows installation
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
winverand press Enter. - Check the Windows version and OS build in the About Windows window. Version 2004 belongs to the 19041 build family; KB4567523 brought it to build 19041.331.
You can also check Settings → System → About → Windows specifications. The exact presentation can vary between Windows 10 builds, so use winver as the primary check.
Before downloading, confirm that the package matches both the Windows release and the device architecture. Most Intel- and AMD-based modern PCs use x64; older 32-bit installations use x86; ARM-based Windows devices use ARM64. Do not install a Windows Server package on a Windows client PC.
Download and install KB4567523 manually
At release, Microsoft listed Windows Update and Microsoft Update as unavailable distribution channels for this package. It was available through the Microsoft Update Catalog, and organizations could manually import it into WSUS. The steps below describe that historical manual installation; they are not a recommendation to add an obsolete update to a fully updated computer.
- Visit the Microsoft Update Catalog search for KB4567523.
- Choose an entry labeled Windows 10 Version 2004 that matches your architecture. The catalog also lists Server packages, which are not for Windows client installations.
- Download the matching
.msufile and open it. Follow the Windows Update Standalone Installer prompts. - Restart if prompted, then test the printer or software printer that was failing.
Microsoft recommended installing the latest applicable servicing stack update (SSU) first and identified KB4560366 for this update process. The SSU improves the reliability of cumulative-update installation. Microsoft said KB4560366 would be offered automatically through Windows Update at the time. On a system updated since 2020, servicing components and cumulative updates may have changed, or KB4567523 may no longer apply.

Verify whether it installed
Run winver again. A successful installation on the relevant version-2004 system should show build 19041.331, unless a later cumulative update has since moved the system to a newer build.

For an optional PowerShell check, run:
Get-HotFix -Id KB4567523If it returns no result, check Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update → View update history. A later cumulative update may have superseded or incorporated the relevant repair, so the absence of this exact KB number does not by itself prove the printing fix is missing.
If printing still fails after the update
First identify whether the failure is limited to one printer or application. If only one printer fails, its queue, port, driver, or device configuration is a more focused place to investigate. If multiple physical printers and Print to PDF fail, the Windows spooler or printing subsystem may be involved. A failure limited to a shared or network printer points toward the server, permissions, name resolution, ports, or shared-driver compatibility.
- Restart the Print Spooler service. In an elevated PowerShell window, use
Restart-Service -Name Spooler. - If jobs are stuck, clear the queue. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run the commands below. They stop the spooler and delete queued print-job files, so this removes pending jobs.
- Remove and reinstall the printer, then install a current driver from its manufacturer.
- Try printing from another application and test Microsoft Print to PDF separately.
- If the problem persists, check Event Viewer for spooler or driver errors, and investigate whether the issue is limited to one user profile or is affected by security software or print-server policies.

net start spoolerThese are general troubleshooting steps; running them does not establish that KB4567523 is installed or applicable. A generic driver may restore basic printing but can omit device-specific features such as duplexing, scanning, finishing, or color management.

Why might Windows say the update is not applicable?
Do not repeatedly force installation. Check these likely causes first:
- Wrong Windows release: the package is for version 2004, not an established 20H2 package.
- Wrong architecture: the downloaded x86, x64, or ARM64 package does not match the system.
- Wrong product: the package is for Windows Server rather than Windows client, or the reverse.
- Supersedence: a later cumulative update may already have replaced the standalone package or included the relevant repair.
- Servicing mismatch: the system may lack a compatible servicing stack or have a servicing configuration for which the package does not apply.
Check winver, the system type, and update history before trying anything else. If the computer is already on a later build, troubleshooting its current printer driver, queue, or print-server setup is generally more useful than attempting to install this 2020 package.
Should you uninstall KB4567523?
Uninstalling is a fallback if printing began failing after the update and other recovery steps point to an update-related regression. Removing it may restore printing in that case, but it can also remove the printer repair. A later cumulative update may prevent KB4567523 from being removed independently.
Before modifying update packages, ensure you have a recovery path, such as a restore point. The historical command-line removal method is:
wusa /uninstall /kb:4567523The graphical route, where available, is Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update → View update history → Uninstall updates. Although KB4567523 was a non-security update, removing updates can affect system reliability; do not uninstall it as a routine printer troubleshooting step.
