In the United States, ZoneAlarm is the practical choice between these two—but compare it with Microsoft Defender, too. Kaspersky’s U.S. sales and antivirus updates have been prohibited, so an existing installation should not be treated as a supported, up-to-date option. Outside the U.S., Kaspersky has stronger current independent Windows test evidence and a broader security-suite lineup; ZoneAlarm is the more firewall-focused alternative.
The short answer depends on where you live
U.S. readers: Don’t choose Kaspersky. The U.S. Department of Commerce barred new agreements with U.S. persons starting July 20, 2024, and barred Kaspersky from providing antivirus signature and code updates to U.S. persons starting September 29, 2024. Kaspersky’s U.S. site says purchases are unavailable. ZoneAlarm is obtainable, but Microsoft Defender is also a sensible no-extra-cost baseline for supported Windows PCs. The Commerce Department’s announcement and its Kaspersky information page explain the restrictions.
Readers elsewhere: If Kaspersky is legally available and supported in your country, it is the stronger evidence-backed antivirus choice in this comparison. Kaspersky Premium earned top marks in the cited AV-TEST Windows 11 evaluations. Choose ZoneAlarm if firewall controls and a firewall-oriented product matter more to you—but the available evidence does not show that its firewall or malware detection is objectively superior.

This is not a clean, like-for-like matchup. “Kaspersky Antivirus” is often used as a generic or legacy name; its current consumer plans are Standard, Plus and Premium. ZoneAlarm’s lineup includes Free Antivirus, Pro Antivirus + Firewall and Extreme Security NextGen. Its Next Generation Antivirus is labeled beta, so it should not be treated as an established retail equivalent.

Malware protection: what the tests actually say
For a current Windows comparison, independent testing is more useful than a vendor’s general promise of protection. In AV-TEST’s February 2026 Windows 11 evaluation, Kaspersky Premium 21.23 scored 6/6 for protection, 6/6 for performance and 6/6 for usability. In the June 2026 evaluation, Kaspersky Premium 21.24 also scored 6/6/6. See the February results and the current Windows results.
Those results apply to the named Premium versions, Windows 11 and the test periods—not every Kaspersky plan, operating system or future release. In particular, don’t automatically transfer Premium’s score to Standard or Plus.
The current AV-TEST Windows consumer tables cited here do not give a directly comparable ZoneAlarm result. ZoneAlarm’s site advertises “100% protection” and references AV-TEST, but that is a vendor claim, not a substitute for a current, independently published head-to-head result. The fairest conclusion is that Kaspersky has stronger current test evidence in this comparison; there is not enough equivalent evidence to rank ZoneAlarm’s detection performance against it.

Firewall: ZoneAlarm’s main distinction
ZoneAlarm’s identity is closely tied to firewall protection. Its product pages describe firewall features, wireless-network detection and automatic firewall security settings. Kaspersky also lists a two-way firewall in its plan comparison, although the feature set depends on tier and platform. So the difference is emphasis, not “firewall versus no firewall.”
The available sources do not establish that ZoneAlarm’s firewall blocks attacks better than Kaspersky’s. If you are comparing them, consider whether you want application-level network controls, clear alerts about connection attempts and an interface you are comfortable managing. A firewall controls network traffic; it does not replace antivirus scanning, phishing defenses or ransomware protection.
Windows also includes Microsoft Defender Firewall. Installing ZoneAlarm is not the only way to get firewall protection, and adding another firewall is worthwhile only if its controls and visibility meet a need that the built-in one does not.
Plans and features: compare equivalent tiers
Kaspersky’s current consumer tiers are Standard, Plus and Premium. Its plan pages describe antivirus, anti-malware and anti-ransomware protection, with additional privacy, identity, family and support features varying by tier. Higher-tier offerings can include a VPN, password manager, identity-related tools, Smart Home Monitor, parental controls or expert assistance. The exact bundle matters: check the current plan page for your country and the devices you need to cover.

ZoneAlarm’s lineup includes Free Antivirus, Pro Antivirus + Firewall and Extreme Security NextGen, as well as products for other platforms. Its product materials describe protection against ransomware, phishing, unsafe websites and malicious downloads, alongside firewall and wireless-network features. Features can differ substantially between its Windows and non-Windows products. The vendor labels Next Generation Antivirus a beta; treat its availability and feature claims accordingly.

Because bundles and renewal terms change, this comparison avoids quoting prices that may be promotional, country-specific or outdated. Before subscribing, confirm device count, term length, introductory and renewal prices, and whether auto-renewal is enabled. Kaspersky says its initial and renewal prices may differ; U.S. customers should not interpret its U.S. plan page as a purchase offer.
Performance and ease of use
Kaspersky’s 6/6 AV-TEST performance score is a strong result in that lab’s Windows 11 evaluation, but it is not a promise of a particular CPU, memory, boot-time or gaming impact on every computer. The cited sources do not provide an equivalent current ZoneAlarm performance score, so there is no substantiated speed winner here.

Hardware, scan settings, cloud features, browser add-ons and Windows version all affect day-to-day impact. If you are deciding between supported products, compare them on the same PC: note idle memory after startup, boot time, file-copy responsiveness, application launches and CPU or disk use during a full scan. Keep settings consistent and treat the result as specific to your machine, not a universal benchmark.

U.S. availability, trust and regulation
The U.S. restriction is central to the decision, but it should be described precisely. The Commerce Department cited national-security risks associated with Kaspersky’s Russian ties, including the risk of Russian government influence and the access and operation of cybersecurity software. It prohibited specified transactions involving Kaspersky products and services for U.S. persons, with the new-agreement and update restrictions taking effect on different dates.
This is not a finding that every Kaspersky customer was individually spied on or that every installation was proven malicious. The department’s action is a national-security and supply-chain decision. It also said individuals and businesses continuing to use existing products would not face legal penalties under the determination, while warning of the associated security risks. For practical purposes, however, software that no longer receives covered antivirus signature and code updates is not a sound supported choice.
Kaspersky disputes the U.S. determination, saying it considers the decision unjustified and driven by geopolitical concerns rather than a comprehensive assessment of product integrity. That is the company’s position, not an independent finding. See its statement responding to the determination.

Which one should you choose?
- You are in the U.S. and want a choice between these two: Choose ZoneAlarm over Kaspersky, because Kaspersky is not a supported, purchasable antivirus option for U.S. customers. Before paying, compare ZoneAlarm with Microsoft Defender and decide whether you need ZoneAlarm’s firewall-oriented controls.
- You are outside the U.S. and want the stronger evidence-backed antivirus: Kaspersky is the better-supported choice in the current Windows test evidence cited here, if it is legally available and you accept its privacy and geopolitical considerations.
- You chiefly want firewall controls: Consider ZoneAlarm Pro Antivirus + Firewall, but do not assume it provides superior malware detection. Also compare its controls with Microsoft Defender Firewall and the firewall included in your Kaspersky tier.
- You want a free Windows option: Compare ZoneAlarm Free Antivirus with Microsoft Defender, not just with paid Kaspersky. ZoneAlarm says its free product is compatible with Microsoft Defender but not another antivirus solution.
- You want a broad suite with VPN, password management or family tools: Compare the exact Kaspersky Plus or Premium bundle available in your country with the ZoneAlarm plan you are considering. Don’t treat ZoneAlarm’s beta product as a mature substitute.
- You need business endpoint management, or want basic protection without another subscription: Neither is automatically the right answer. Microsoft Defender is built into supported Windows installations; organizations should compare business-focused products rather than consumer plans.
Microsoft Defender is an important baseline
Windows Security includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus and Microsoft Defender Firewall, so many home users already have a no-extra-subscription starting point. In the June 2026 AV-TEST Windows results, Microsoft Defender scored 6 for protection, 5.5 for performance and 6 for usability. That gives readers a current comparison point, not proof that Defender is best for every configuration. See the AV-TEST consumer results and Microsoft’s Windows Security guidance.
If you want a different paid suite, Bitdefender, ESET, Norton, F-Secure, Avast and McAfee are candidates to research—not automatic recommendations. Compare current independent results for the exact product and platform, as well as the full renewal cost and cancellation terms.
Switching safely from an existing antivirus
- Pick one real-time antivirus. Do not run ZoneAlarm alongside another third-party antivirus unless the product documentation explicitly supports that configuration. ZoneAlarm says its Free Antivirus works with Microsoft Defender but not another antivirus product.
- Remove the old third-party product. Use its normal uninstaller, then restart Windows if prompted. If removal fails, use the vendor’s official cleanup guidance rather than installing a second antivirus over it.
- Install the replacement and update it. Allow the product to download current updates before relying on it or starting a full scan.
- Check Windows Security. Confirm Windows recognizes the active antivirus and that protection and firewall status are reported as enabled. Labels and menus can change between Windows releases.
- Restart and verify. Check that the old product is no longer reporting active protection, that the replacement is updating, and that you are not receiving conflicting security alerts.
If you are in the U.S. and still have Kaspersky installed, an old interface or subscription status does not establish that it is receiving current covered antivirus signatures or code updates. Replace it with a supported security product rather than relying on a stale installation.
