JWST detected carbon dioxide in the surface spectra of all eight mid-sized Saturnian moons examined in a 2025 study. The result is not a discovery of CO₂ atmospheres: the spectra instead suggest that solid CO₂ is held in several different surface environments, with possible sources ranging from Saturn’s E ring to irradiated dark material.

What JWST measured

The researchers used near-infrared spectroscopy, including JWST’s NIRSpec observations, to study light reflected from Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione, Rhea, Hyperion, Iapetus and Phoebe. The observations covered roughly 1.8 to 5.2 micrometres. Rather than taking ordinary visible-light pictures, the telescope measured how the surfaces absorb specific wavelengths.

Carbon dioxide has notable absorption features near 4.26 and 2.7 micrometres. The 4.26-micrometre feature appeared on all eight targets. The 2.7-micrometre feature appeared on every target except Phoebe and Iapetus’s leading hemisphere. That missing feature does not establish that CO₂ is absent there: band visibility can depend on how the molecule is mixed or trapped, as well as on observing conditions.

The position and shape of an absorption band can change with its surroundings. CO₂ that is relatively isolated, mixed with water ice, trapped in amorphous ice or associated with dark organic-rich material can leave different spectral signatures. The study interprets these differences as evidence for four broad trapping environments, not four different molecules. The study and its findings were published in The Planetary Science Journal in 2025 (volume 6, issue 7, article 180; DOI 10.3847/PSJ/ADE807).

Four proposed places for CO₂ to hide

“Trapped” CO₂ need not form a thick, exposed sheet of pure carbon-dioxide ice. It can be held within or alongside another surface material. The authors use the spectral differences to propose distinct settings and histories:

  • CO₂ in amorphous water ice: On the inner moons, one component is consistent with CO₂ trapped in amorphous ice—water ice whose molecules are arranged without the orderly structure of a crystal. The authors suggest that this material may be delivered by Saturn’s E ring.
  • CO₂ associated with dark material on inner moons: A different component is linked to the dark material especially visible on the trailing hemispheres of Dione and Rhea. “Dark material” describes a surface appearance and is not a precise identification of one substance; JWST’s spectra do not provide a complete inventory of its chemistry.
  • CO₂ connected to irradiated organics on outer moons: The study proposes that irradiation of organic-rich material on Phoebe could produce CO₂, which may then be transported to Iapetus and Hyperion.
  • CO₂ held in water ice on parts of outer moons: Some CO₂ on Iapetus’s trailing hemisphere and on Hyperion appears consistent with trapping in water ice, alongside the signatures associated with dark material.

These are interpretations of spectral band positions, informed by comparisons with surface environments—not direct samples or definitive proof of a complete production-and-transport route. The authors also point to the need for further laboratory work to distinguish the proposed trapping mechanisms.

Why the inner moons point toward the E ring

Mimas, Enceladus, Tethys, Dione and Rhea lie inside Titan’s orbit. Their surfaces differ, but they share exposure to material circulating through Saturn’s E ring. Enceladus is an important part of that context: its active south-polar plume supplies much of the ring’s icy particles. The study suggests that E-ring material could carry CO₂ trapped in amorphous ice onto neighboring moons.

That is a plausible system-level explanation, not a direct tracing of individual molecules from Enceladus to each surface. It also does not mean the dark-material-associated CO₂ on Dione and Rhea has the same origin as the ice-trapped component. The comparison instead suggests that multiple processes can leave CO₂ on nearby moons.

What the outer moons add

Hyperion, Iapetus and Phoebe lie beyond Titan and have substantially different surfaces from the brighter, water-ice-rich inner satellites. Their spectra support a different proposed story: Phoebe’s organic-rich dark material may be altered by irradiation, producing CO₂ that can be transported elsewhere in the Saturn system. Material from Phoebe has been proposed as a contributor to Iapetus’s unusually dark leading hemisphere; the JWST study connects outer-moon CO₂ patterns with that broader possibility, while treating the pathway as an interpretation rather than a demonstrated chain of events.

The outer-moon results are not identical. CO₂ on Iapetus’s trailing hemisphere and on Hyperion also appears associated with water ice. And because Hyperion and Phoebe are non-synchronous, comparisons between their observed faces do not work in the same way as for tidally locked moons. The observations sample selected regions and hemispheres, not a uniformly complete global map of every target.

Enceladus: surface CO₂ is not plume CO₂

Enceladus is relevant to the proposed E-ring delivery route, but the 2025 result is about CO₂ signatures in surface spectra. It does not directly measure the moon’s subsurface ocean, establish the ocean’s chemistry or prove that the surface CO₂ came from the ocean.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A separate JWST study examined Enceladus’s water plume. It measured water-vapor outgassing at roughly 300 kilograms per second but did not detect CO₂, carbon monoxide or methane in the plume spectra it analyzed. That finding is distinct from the surface survey: a CO₂ signature on a moon’s surface is not evidence that the same gas is present in its plume. The plume study reports its measurements and non-detections.

What is new compared with Cassini?

CO₂ signatures on Saturnian satellites were not wholly unknown before JWST. Earlier Cassini/VIMS work reported CO₂-related features on some moons, including Phoebe, Iapetus, Hyperion and Dione. JWST’s contribution is a broader, more sensitive comparison across eight targets, using near-infrared spectra to examine how CO₂’s apparent surroundings differ from moon to moon. Earlier Cassini/VIMS research provides useful context.

The comparison turns a detection into a planetary-science question: if CO₂ occurs across one system, what controls where it accumulates and how it is preserved? The answer suggested by this study is that the host material and local history matter—not simply whether a moon is cold enough to contain ice.

What the study does—and does not—show

  • It shows: JWST detected the 4.26-micrometre CO₂ feature in spectra of all eight selected moons, with a second feature found on most of the observed targets.
  • It suggests: CO₂ is present in multiple trapping environments, and E-ring delivery, irradiation and material transport could help explain the patterns.
  • It does not show: a new CO₂ atmosphere, a new Enceladus plume detection, proof that all the CO₂ has one source, or evidence of life.

CO₂ is common in planetary environments and can be produced or redistributed through non-biological processes, including irradiation of carbon-bearing material. Its detection alone is not a biosignature. Nor does a spectral detection automatically reveal the total quantity of CO₂: the study is chiefly about distribution and physical environment, not a simple ranking of how much each moon contains.

Further laboratory measurements of CO₂ mixed with different ices and dark materials, along with better models of surface processing and additional observations, can test which proposed mechanisms best explain the spectra.
