A December 26, 2024 Pacific Northwest Tech Moves roundup described three different kinds of leadership change: Washington state Sen. Joe Nguyễn was selected to direct the Washington State Department of Commerce; Banzai International appointed Nancy Norton chief legal officer; and Remitly executive Rene Yoakum left her operating role for a consulting transition.
The Commerce appointment was not a move to the federal U.S. Department of Commerce. It put a technology veteran and state legislator in charge of Washington’s economic-development agency. Later reporting also showed that Nguyễn’s Commerce tenure lasted about a year before he moved to lead the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce.
Joe Nguyễn’s move to Washington Commerce
Then-Washington state Sen. Joe Nguyễn was selected to become director of the Washington State Department of Commerce, succeeding Mike Fong, who had led the agency since May 2023. The appointment was announced in December 2024, with Nguyễn expected to begin shortly afterward.
Commerce is a state agency, not the federal U.S. Department of Commerce. Its work spans economic and community development, clean energy, electric vehicles, affordable housing and related programs that affect businesses, local governments and residents across Washington.

Nguyễn brought nearly a decade at Microsoft before entering public office and had represented Washington in the State Senate since 2019. He chaired the Senate Environment, Energy and Technology Committee and served as vice chair of Ways and Means. His legislative record included climate and clean-energy measures, facial-recognition regulation and computer-science education.
He is Washington’s first Vietnamese American state senator. His family’s refugee history added personal significance to an appointment involving opportunity, economic mobility and public investment.
Why the appointment mattered
Nguyễn’s selection connected the state’s technology sector with decisions about infrastructure, workforce development, energy policy and business growth. It also posed a practical question: could experience at a large technology company and in the Legislature translate into execution across a complex state agency?
In a May 2025 interview, Nguyễn described Commerce as a potential “incubator” for modernizing government. He discussed using artificial-intelligence tools to streamline contract-compliance work. At that point, the agency was described as overseeing approximately $8 billion across 485 programs and employing about 850 people. Those figures reflect the agency’s scale at that time, not a permanent budget or program count.
The opportunity came with trade-offs. Technology experience can help identify inefficient processes, but public-sector leaders must work within statutes, procurement rules, appropriations, labor obligations and extensive stakeholder demands. Modernization therefore requires more than adopting software; it requires changing processes without weakening accountability.
What happened next to Nguyễn?
The original appointment was not the end of the story. In December 2025, Nguyễn told Commerce employees he was leaving after approximately one year in the director’s role. He was named president and CEO of the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, with the new job scheduled to begin at the end of January 2026.

He succeeded interim leader Gabriella Buono after Rachel Smith left for the Washington Roundtable. In the Chamber role, Nguyễn identified priorities including Washington’s business climate, job creation, affordability, effective use of public resources and regional economic stability.

Banzai appoints Nancy Norton as chief legal officer
Banzai International announced Nancy Norton as its chief legal officer in December 2024. The timing requires a small qualification: the announcement came in December, while LinkedIn information cited in the roundup indicated that Norton had been in the position since June.
Norton’s background covers legal and corporate work in technology and biotechnology. Her most recent employer was Novartis, where she worked for just under four years. Earlier positions included Johnson & Johnson, Kymeta, Avanade and Dendreon, among others.

Those responsibilities were particularly relevant because Banzai had become a public company the previous year and had announced acquisitions of OpenReel, a digital video-creation platform for businesses, and Vidello, a business video-hosting and marketing-technology provider.

A legal chief with experience in transactions, privacy and regulation can give a growing public company the internal capacity to evaluate acquisitions and manage their integration. The appointment aligned with Banzai’s acquisition activity and stated growth plans, but the available reporting does not show that Norton personally negotiated or completed either transaction, nor does it measure the hire’s eventual business impact.

Remitly’s executive vice president of customer and culture, Rene Yoakum, was leaving her executive role after more than six years with the company. She was scheduled to begin providing consulting services to Remitly on January 1, 2025.
The filing-based arrangement was expected to run through December 31, 2026, unless either side ended it earlier. That makes the transition different from an immediate departure: Yoakum would no longer hold the day-to-day executive position, but Remitly could retain her institutional knowledge and advice during the handoff.

Yoakum previously spent nearly two decades at Microsoft and left in 2016 after serving as general manager of global consumer support. The headline shorthand “retirement” should be read carefully. The documented facts establish her exit from Remitly’s operating role and a subsequent consulting agreement; they do not prove a permanent retirement from all professional activity.

Yoakum’s move was an executive succession with a planned consulting handoff rather than a clean, immediate break.
For current status beyond the documented timeline, fresh first-party checks would be needed. The available coverage does not independently establish Norton’s or Yoakum’s status after the periods described.
