Direct answer: compare the server’s response HTML with the post-script DOM in a repeatable browser test, then use Google Search Console URL Inspection or the Rich Results Test when the question is search visibility. “View Source” shows the original response; DevTools’ Elements panel shows the live DOM after scripts and resources have changed it. A local browser run demonstrates what that test browser rendered under its exact conditions—it does not prove that Google rendered the same result.

Raw HTML and rendered HTML answer different questions

Raw HTML is the response body returned by your server (or CDN) before page JavaScript executes. It includes the initial elements, links, metadata, and structured data sent over the network.

Rendered HTML is the browser’s current DOM after parsing, executing scripts, fetching resources, handling user state, and applying framework updates. It can contain nodes that never existed in the response, and it can remove or alter nodes that did.

View Source versus Inspect Element

  • View Source (or an HTTP client) answers: “What bytes did the server return?” It normally does not execute your application.
  • Inspect Element/Elements answers: “What DOM does this browser have now?” It reflects script execution, hydration, interactions, and browser corrections.

A difference is normal for a client-rendered application. Your test should determine whether the differences preserve the content, links, metadata, and structured data that matter.

A repeatable comparison workflow

  1. Save the response. Fetch the URL without a browser and store the body. Search it for essential text, canonical and other metadata, internal links, and JSON-LD or other structured data that should exist before rendering.
  2. Define the ready state. Choose an application signal such as a data-ready="true" attribute, a visible heading, completion of a specific API request, or a framework hydration marker. Do not use an arbitrary sleep as a universal rendering guarantee.
  3. Run a controlled browser. Pin the browser family and version, viewport, device emulation, locale, timezone, session state, and network conditions. Record the URL, timestamp, and test configuration.
  4. Capture diagnostics. Collect console errors, uncaught exceptions, failed requests, HTTP status codes, and the final DOM. These often explain why raw content never appears after execution.
  5. Assert outcomes. Check the resulting DOM for required text, destinations of important links, title and metadata values, structured data, and visible states. Compare normalized snapshots rather than treating every framework-generated attribute as meaningful.
  6. Interpret the diff. Classify each change as expected (for example, a client-rendered product list), a regression (a missing heading), or an environment dependency (a feature available only in one browser).

Automate application behavior with Playwright

Playwright supports Chromium, WebKit, and Firefox, device emulation, and branded Chrome or Edge channels. That lets you test both a browser engine and the browser distribution your users actually run. Install it in a project with npm install -D @playwright/test, then install the required browsers with npx playwright install.

import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';

for (const browserName of ['chromium', 'firefox', 'webkit']) {
  test(`${browserName} renders critical content`, async ({ playwright }) => {
    const browserType = playwright[browserName];
    const browser = await browserType.launch();
    const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
    const consoleErrors = [];
    const failedRequests = [];
    page.on('console', msg => { if (msg.type() === 'error') consoleErrors.push(msg.text()); });
    page.on('requestfailed', request => failedRequests.push({ url: request.url(), error: request.failure()?.errorText }));

    const response = await page.goto('https://example.com/article', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
    await page.locator('[data-ready="true"]').waitFor();

    await expect(page.locator('h1')).toContainText('Expected heading');
    await expect(page.locator('a[href="/pricing"]')).toBeVisible();
    const rendered = await page.content();
    console.log({ browserName, status: response?.status(), consoleErrors, failedRequests, renderedLength: rendered.length });
    await browser.close();
  });
}

Use a branded channel when that is the compatibility question, for example Chromium bundled with Playwright versus installed Chrome. Keep separate baselines for initial load and post-interaction states such as opening a menu or submitting a form.

Automate with Puppeteer when Chrome coverage is the priority

Puppeteer automates Chrome and Firefox and exposes interaction, request interception, screenshots, and complex-UI testing. A minimal raw-versus-rendered check is:

import puppeteer from 'puppeteer';

const raw = await fetch('https://example.com/article').then(r => r.text());
const browser = await puppeteer.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage();
const errors = [];
page.on('console', msg => { if (msg.type() === 'error') errors.push(msg.text()); });
page.on('requestfailed', request => errors.push(`${request.url()}: ${request.failure()?.errorText}`));
await page.goto('https://example.com/article', { waitUntil: 'domcontentloaded' });
await page.waitForSelector('[data-ready="true"]');
const rendered = await page.content();
console.log({ rawHasHeading: raw.includes('Expected heading'), renderedHasHeading: rendered.includes('Expected heading'), errors });
await browser.close();

For either framework, make the readiness condition part of the application contract. If no reliable signal exists, add one rather than increasing a timeout until a flaky test happens to pass.

How to test what Google can render

Google treats crawling, rendering, and indexing as separate stages. It generally uses rendered HTML for indexing, but a page can wait in a rendering queue. Blocked scripts or resources prevent complete rendering, and rendering can be skipped for some non-200 responses.

Search Console URL Inspection

For a property you manage, inspect the live URL in Search Console’s URL Inspection tool. Review the rendered HTML, loaded resources, JavaScript console output, exceptions, and indexing status. Test the exact production URL, not a staging copy that has different permissions or assets.

Rich Results Test

For an eligible public page, use Google’s Rich Results Test. The page must be reachable without login and must not be blocked by robots.txt. Examine the rendered DOM and detected structured data, then correct the specific blocked request or script failure shown by the tool.

Neither tool is a substitute for your browser suite, and a local pass is not evidence that Google produced the same DOM. Google’s rendering environment, queue timing, resource access, and supported features differ from yours.

Why browser content can be missing from source or search

Client-only data fetching

The server sends an empty application shell and the browser fills it after an API call. Put critical copy, links, titles, and structured data in server-rendered HTML when possible, or verify that the client request reliably succeeds for crawlers.

Blocked crawling or resources

Check robots.txt, HTTP response headers, authentication, CORS, and CDN rules. A page can be crawlable while a JavaScript bundle, stylesheet, API endpoint, or image required for rendering is blocked.

Errors and unsupported features

Use console and request logs to find exceptions, failed modules, and browser APIs unavailable in the target environment. Web components must emit their meaningful content in a form the rendering environment can process.

Status and timing

Confirm the document returns an appropriate successful status. A redirect chain, timeout, or non-200 response can change whether rendering is attempted. Replace fixed waits with a deterministic ready condition and ensure essential content is available without an unbounded chain of requests.

Stale assets

Google notes that its Web Rendering Service may ignore caching headers and can use outdated JavaScript or CSS. Fingerprinted asset filenames (for example, content hashes) make a new deployment distinguishable from an old resource.

Server rendering, prerendering, and dynamic rendering

Server-side rendering or prerendering sends useful HTML before JavaScript runs. Google recommends these approaches for speed and for crawlers that cannot execute JavaScript. Dynamic rendering can serve pre-rendered output to bots, but Google describes it as a workaround rather than a long-term solution for JavaScript-generated content. Treat it as an operational bridge while moving toward server rendering or a robust hybrid architecture.

Test matrix and reliability checklist

Axis What to vary Why it matters
Browser Chromium, Firefox, WebKit; bundled versus branded Chrome/Edge Engine and channel differences expose compatibility bugs.
Device Desktop and representative mobile viewport/device profiles Responsive markup and interaction paths can change.
State Unauthenticated, authenticated, consent accepted, first visit Cookies and sessions alter the DOM and network requests.
Timing Initial load, ready state, and post-interaction checkpoints Content may appear only after hydration or user action.
Network Normal, throttled, failed API, and blocked third-party resource Reveals assumptions that make rendering fragile.
  • Fail the build on missing critical text, links, metadata, or structured data.
  • Store console errors and failed-request URLs with each failure.
  • Normalize dynamic IDs and timestamps before snapshot comparison.
  • Run the Google-specific check after deployments that change routing, robots rules, bundles, or rendering architecture.

Troubleshooting common failures

“The source contains the text, but the DOM test does not”

The app may remove the node during hydration or render a different route. Capture the DOM immediately after navigation and after the ready signal, then inspect console errors and route state.

“The DOM test passes locally, but Google’s tool is missing content”

Inspect blocked resources, status codes, robots rules, exceptions, and the rendered HTML in Google’s tool. Reproduce with the same unauthenticated URL and ensure critical content does not depend on a browser-only API.

“Tests are flaky”

Replace sleeps with a specific locator or network-backed readiness condition, isolate test data, pin browser versions, and record failed requests. Avoid waiting for an unrelated analytics or advertising request.

FAQ

Can I compare HTML with a text diff?

Yes, but normalize whitespace, attribute ordering, generated IDs, and timestamps first. Assertions on required semantics are more stable than a complete byte-for-byte DOM diff.

Does a screenshot prove that content is indexable?

No. A screenshot proves only that a particular browser produced pixels. Use source checks, DOM assertions, and Google’s inspection tools for crawl and rendering questions.

Should every page be server-rendered?

No. Choose the architecture that fits the interaction, but make content that must be discovered or shared available in dependable HTML and verify it with the appropriate tests.
