The Jason Statham film in question is Redemption (2013), also released internationally as Hummingbird. It is a reasonable candidate for Statham’s most revealing performance—not because it is his biggest or most entertaining action movie, but because it asks him to play a traumatized, unstable and morally conflicted man rather than an effortlessly dominant professional.
In the U.S., the film was listed as available free with ads on several services as of August 1, 2026. Streaming catalogs change frequently, so search for both titles before watching.

Statham plays Joey Jones, a former Special Forces soldier living on the streets of London after fleeing a military court-martial. Early in the film, Joey takes over another man’s identity and apartment. The change gives him access to money and to London’s criminal underworld, but it also creates an opportunity to pursue his own idea of moral repair.

Joey becomes connected to Sister Cristina, a nun who works with homeless people. At the same time, his criminal activity and military past continue to pull him toward violence. His desire to help others is tied to revenge for the murder of a woman close to him, making his supposed path to redemption deeply compromised.
That contradiction is the film’s central idea: Joey tries to do something good while relying on the same criminality and violence that helped destroy his life. The premise is more interested in guilt, trauma and atonement than in simply giving Statham another target to eliminate.
Why is the film divisive?
Redemption sits awkwardly—and sometimes deliberately—between several genres. It includes crime, revenge, organized violence and action, but it also spends substantial time on homelessness, addiction, religious compassion and psychological damage.

That combination can be appealing if you want a bleak character study. It can also feel uneven if you expect the clean momentum of a conventional Statham action vehicle. The film’s opening is slower and more dramatic than many viewers may anticipate, while later shifts between moral reflection, crime plotting and brutal violence can seem either ambitious or awkward.
The reception reflects that split. Rotten Tomatoes lists the film at 50% from critics and 38% from audiences, while its consensus recognizes Statham’s commitment and the film’s larger ambitions but argues that the premise is not fully realized. IMDb lists it at 6.2/10, based on roughly 82,000 ratings on the retrieved listing. These figures suggest mixed reception—not universal rejection, and not a settled critical rediscovery.
Supporters tend to value the unusual premise and Statham’s willingness to look vulnerable. Detractors often point to the uneven tone, moralizing and lack of focus. Both reactions are understandable because the film’s ambition is also one of its weaknesses.

Why Statham’s performance stands out
He plays weakness instead of invincibility
Many Statham roles are built around control. His characters are usually skilled, physically capable and prepared to take over a situation. Joey is different from the moment he appears. He is isolated, exhausted, traumatized and unstable. His toughness remains visible, but it feels like damage rather than effortless mastery.

The role is driven by drama, not set pieces
The performance depends on shame, self-loathing, alcoholism, fear, religious guilt and complicated affection. Joey wants to help people, yet he repeatedly causes harm. He seeks a clean moral answer through dirty methods, and Statham has to communicate that contradiction without turning Joey into a straightforward hero.
The result is not necessarily his most polished performance, but it is one of his clearest departures from the controlled action persona associated with his mainstream roles.
His physicality communicates history
Joey’s military training explains his ability to fight, but the film does not use his body only to make him look formidable. His posture, exhaustion and battered appearance suggest a man whose violence has become inseparable from his identity.
Statham’s physical presence therefore serves two purposes. It gives Joey credibility in violent situations, while also showing the cost of the life he has lived. The action is character evidence rather than a substitute for characterization.

Restraint does more work than swagger
Joey is not constantly delivering the confident one-liners or cool threats associated with some of Statham’s genre roles. Silence, hesitation and physical deterioration often carry more weight than dialogue. That restraint gives the character an uncertainty that is unusual for the actor’s typical leading-man roles.

In The Transporter, Statham’s appeal comes largely from watching a controlled professional solve problems. Crank amplifies his physicality into comic-book chaos. The Mechanic emphasizes cool competence, while Safe and Parker offer more conventional action-hero charisma. In Wrath of Man, his restraint creates an opaque, threatening presence.
Redemption is different in kind. Its case is not that Statham is objectively better here than in every other film. Rather, Joey shows a side of his range that his more polished action roles usually keep hidden.
Is it really an action thriller?
Only with qualification. The film contains violence, criminal activity and revenge, but it is better described as a crime drama/action-thriller hybrid than as a nonstop action movie. IMDb categorizes it across action, crime, drama and thriller, while Rotten Tomatoes uses a similar mixture of mystery/thriller, action, crime and drama classifications.
Watch it for atmosphere, moral conflict and Statham’s dramatic turn. Do not watch it expecting a steady sequence of elaborate set pieces. The action exists inside Joey’s psychological and moral story.
Who should watch it?
It is worth trying if you:
- Want to see Statham play a vulnerable, damaged character.
- Prefer character-driven crime thrillers to pure action spectacles.
- Can handle bleak subject matter involving homelessness, addiction, prostitution, religious guilt and brutal violence.
- Enjoy morally compromised protagonists and imperfect films with serious ambitions.
You may want to skip it if you:
- Expect a fast, polished Transporter-style action ride.
- Dislike tonal shifts between social drama, revenge thriller and crime film.
- Prefer clear plotting and conventional redemption arcs.
- Find overt moral symbolism or uneven execution frustrating.

Roku’s own listing identifies the film as free with ads. “Free” generally means advertising-supported viewing, not necessarily ad-free playback, and a service may require a free account, supported device or location-specific access.

Verdict
Redemption is not necessarily Jason Statham’s most entertaining film, nor is its execution consistently successful. But it is a persuasive candidate for his most revealing performance. Joey Jones is vulnerable where Statham’s usual heroes are controlled, morally conflicted where they are mission-focused, and visibly damaged where they are often presented as nearly unstoppable.
The film’s mixed reception is fair: its unusual ideas do not always fit smoothly together. If you approach it as a bleak crime drama with action elements—not as another Transporter—its central performance becomes much easier to appreciate.
