Japan’s WOTA Unit is a real residential water-recycling system designed to let a home reuse much of its wastewater without relying on conventional municipal water and sewer connections. But “say goodbye to water pipes” overstates what it does: the system still needs plumbing, electricity, storage, maintenance and replacement water, and its current domestic-water output is not recommended for drinking.
WOTA says the system can recycle up to 97% of household wastewater under specified conditions. As of August 18, 2026, the company describes WOTA Unit as under development for mass production, not as a widely available plug-and-play appliance.
What is WOTA Unit?
WOTA Unit is a residential water-regeneration system made by Japanese water-technology company WOTA Corp. Rather than simply filtering drinking water at a tap, it collects household wastewater, treats it and circulates it for approved domestic uses. WOTA describes the system as capable of operating without conventional water and sewer connections, but a house using it would still need a purpose-designed network of pipes, tanks, drains and other equipment. How the water-recycling loop works
WOTA says the system can take in water from sources including showers, sinks, kitchens and washing machines. Its described treatment chain combines biological treatment, filtration and membrane processes, advanced purification, and disinfection using deep ultraviolet light and/or chlorine. Sensors monitor water quality and system conditions, while control algorithms adjust operation. Treated water is stored and returned to household uses.
- Collect wastewater. Household drains route eligible wastewater to the treatment system.
- Treat it. Microorganisms break down organic matter; filters and membranes remove additional contaminants; further treatment and disinfection prepare water for reuse.
- Monitor and store. Sensors and controls manage the process, and treated water is held in tanks for household demand.
- Reuse and replenish. Water is sent back for domestic applications. Rainwater or another freshwater source must make up losses and the portion that cannot be recovered.
This is a near-closed reuse loop, not a system that creates water or runs forever without an outside supply. Some water is lost through evaporation and treatment byproducts, and the system needs replacement water. WOTA’s product materials say the actual recycling rate depends on use and operating conditions.
What does “up to 97%” mean?
WOTA’s claim is up to 97% of household wastewater, not a guarantee that every home will recycle exactly 97% of all the water it uses. The achieved rate can vary with household habits, the type and amount of contaminants, operating and storage conditions, and water lost during treatment. The need for makeup water also means the headline percentage should not be read as proof of a perfectly closed loop. Can you drink the recycled water?
Do not assume so. WOTA’s Japanese product page says the domestic-water output meets Japan’s water-quality standard covering 51 parameters but is not recommended for drinking. The company’s materials refer to WHO drinking-water guidelines, but that reference does not change the product’s stated intended use. Drinking and cooking water should come from a separate source unless a specific installation has been independently validated and legally approved for potable use.

Japan’s tap-water standard and a system’s stated domestic-water quality should not be collapsed into the blanket claim “the machine makes drinking water.” The company itself distinguishes the current domestic supply from drinking water and says drinking water can instead come from bottled water or a dispenser; a rainwater-based drinking-water unit is under development.
Toilet wastewater is not the same as greywater
Shower, sink and laundry water are commonly grouped as greywater. Waste from toilets is a different, more demanding stream. WOTA’s English product materials describe a dedicated toilet-water unit that treats toilet wastewater for flushing, while its Japanese page also shows a configuration in which toilet wastewater continues to a sewer or septic system. In other words, toilet handling depends on the installation; do not assume every WOTA Unit processes sewage as part of one universal package.
That difference affects plumbing, permits and what infrastructure a property still needs. Ask whether a proposed configuration treats toilet wastewater, diverts it to an existing sewer, or relies on a septic system. Greywater reuse, making flushing water, treating blackwater and providing complete onsite sanitation are related but distinct jobs.

Published size, capacity and power
WOTA’s published specifications make clear that this is a substantial utility installation, not a countertop device:

WOTA’s English materials describe a 150-liter main tank and two optional 250-liter tanks, for up to 650 liters of storage in that configuration. The company also gives example water-use estimates for a three-person household, such as about 21 gallons for a shower and 40 gallons for laundry. These are company estimates, not independent measurements of every household’s use or system performance. Specifications and configurations may change; check with WOTA for current details.
What installation actually involves
“No conventional water and sewer connections” does not mean “no pipes.” A real installation would need to address:
- Internal supply and wastewater collection plumbing, potentially with separate routing for different streams.
- Toilet plumbing and the selected treatment, sewer or septic configuration.
- Space, access and support for a 170 kg unit, plus tanks and service clearance.
- Electrical service and a plan for power outages.
- Rainwater collection or another makeup-water supply, along with storage.
- Overflow, concentrated treatment waste and water that cannot be reused.
- Local building, plumbing, sanitation and water-reuse approvals.
- Maintenance access and a service provider able to support the system.
Local rules differ, and compliance in Japan does not automatically authorize the same use elsewhere. Before specifying the system for a project, establish what water uses are legally permitted in that jurisdiction and what monitoring and commissioning are required.

Limits and failure points to plan for
A finite treatment rate and finite storage do not provide unlimited water. Several long showers, laundry and heavy kitchen use can create peaks above what the system can process at that moment; tanks help buffer demand, but do not remove the need to size and operate the system correctly. A dry spell can also reduce rainwater availability, so an alternative makeup source and backup water plan matter.
- Power loss: Treatment and pumping depend on electricity. Ask how long stored water remains usable and what backup power or bypass is supported.
- Biological upset or chemical damage: Biological treatment relies on microorganisms. Strong disinfectants, solvents, harsh chemicals and excessive antibacterial products may impair treatment.
- Clogs and equipment maintenance: Oils, grease, large quantities of food waste and other solids can burden filters or pumps. Follow the installation manual rather than guessing which products are compatible.
- Cold conditions: The listed normal range starts around 0°C; freezing protection is essential where temperatures can fall below that.
- High demand or low rainfall: Occupancy, unusually heavy use and limited makeup water can constrain performance.
- Service or monitoring gaps: A developing system requires a clear maintenance schedule, replacement parts and a plan for water-quality checks.
WOTA warns against substances that could burden its microorganisms or filters, but the cited product page does not provide a complete chemical compatibility list. Ask the vendor and installer about detergents, cleaning products, bleach, oils and grease, and follow the final operating manual.

WOTA’s public materials describe the system as progressing toward mass production, not as a normal retail appliance with a standard consumer checkout and published price. The company says the product passed Technology Readiness Level 6 in 2025 and is advancing toward TRL 7 demonstrations in real-world conditions; it also says mass-production development is supported by Japan’s NEDO. Who might benefit—and who probably would not
WOTA Unit may be worth evaluating for remote properties without reliable water service, resilient housing, water-stressed communities, disaster-preparedness projects or sites where extending centralized infrastructure is difficult. Its decentralized approach could reduce dependence on a distant network, although the unit itself still depends on energy, maintenance and water inputs.
It is a poor match for renters who cannot alter plumbing, homes without room for the equipment and tanks, buyers who only need better-tasting drinking water, or households seeking a simple low-cost retrofit. A conventional connected home may be better served by municipal utilities, water-saving fixtures, rainwater capture for non-potable uses, or a targeted greywater system.
How it compares with other approaches

WOTA also sells or develops WOTA BOX, a separate portable water-recycling system associated with emergency response and portable shower use. It should not be confused with a permanent whole-house WOTA Unit installation.
The realistic takeaway
WOTA Unit is a serious attempt to decentralize household water infrastructure, and its up-to-97% reuse claim is a notable target. But it does not let an ordinary homeowner simply disconnect every pipe and forget about water supply. It needs a carefully designed installation, electricity, tanks, maintenance, makeup water and separate provision for drinking water. For now, it is best viewed as a developing option for resilience and specialized projects—not a mass-market replacement for municipal water and sewer service.
