Japan’s SLIM lander repeatedly resumed communications after lunar nights it was not designed to survive—but it is not still waking up. JAXA last heard from the spacecraft on April 28, 2024, and formally ended its lunar operations on August 23, 2024. The remarkable part is what happened in between: SLIM survived three lunar nights and returned to work during the daylight that followed each one.
What was SLIM?
SLIM—the Smart Lander for Investigating Moon—was a Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) technology demonstrator. Its main goal was to show that a spacecraft could land with high precision, rather than simply reach a broad, safe region. Launched aboard an H-IIA rocket on September 7, 2023, it targeted a site east of Shioli crater.
SLIM touched down at about 00:20 Japan Standard Time on January 20, 2024 (January 19 UTC), achieving Japan’s first successful soft landing on the Moon. JAXA assessed that the spacecraft reached roughly 10 meters or less from its target before its final obstacle-avoidance maneuver; the final landing point was about 55–60 meters from the intended site. That is an unusually precise result, even though the touchdown did not go exactly to plan. JAXA’s mission summary describes both the landing performance and the mission’s later results.
A successful landing with a serious power problem
A problem with one of SLIM’s propulsion systems occurred during the final descent. The lander still made a soft landing, but came to rest in an abnormal attitude. Its solar panels were poorly oriented toward the Sun and initially could not generate enough power for normal operation.

JAXA therefore shut SLIM down shortly after touchdown to preserve what power remained. This was not the same as the spacecraft being destroyed, nor did it mean the landing objective had simply failed. SLIM had reached the surface and demonstrated its precision-landing capability, but its posture left its power supply uncertain.
JAXA expected the Sun’s apparent movement across the lunar sky might eventually bring light to the panels. When illumination improved, the panels generated enough power for the lander to communicate again. SLIM’s first major post-landing recovery came around February 25, 2024, after it had endured its first lunar night.

Why lunar night is so hard on a lander
At many lunar locations, daylight lasts about 14 Earth days, followed by roughly 14 Earth days of darkness. The change brings severe thermal conditions: a lander must cope with both intense daytime heating and prolonged cold in darkness. A spacecraft that depends on solar power also has to get through the night without sunlight.

Its unexpected returns should not be read as evidence that it ran continuously while dark. Instead, the lander became responsive when conditions—including sunlight and available power—allowed it to operate again. JAXA has not identified one definitive explanation for how the spacecraft survived the repeated thermal cycles. JAXA’s SLIM briefing confirms both the design limitation and the three lunar-night survivals.

SLIM’s three lunar-night survivals

JAXA’s official count is three lunar nights survived. Different accounts may use “wake-up” to count the initial recovery and later returns differently, so the dated operating windows are clearer than an unexplained total of wake-ups.
More than a survival story
The lander’s unexpected resilience was not its only achievement. SLIM carried out observations with its Multi-Band Camera, collecting spectroscopic data across 10 wavelength bands and observing 10 rocks. Its small LEV-1 and LEV-2 (SORA-Q) vehicles also operated on the lunar surface. JAXA additionally reported laser-ranging work involving NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and SLIM’s laser retroreflector array. These results made the mission useful even beyond its landing demonstration and surprising survival.

Why engineers care—and what remains unknown
Surviving repeated lunar nights gives engineers valuable evidence about how real spacecraft hardware behaves beyond its planned operating profile. SLIM’s data may help inform future lander designs, including thermal protection, heaters, redundant power paths and the way a spacecraft manages a low-power shutdown.

But the survival mechanism remains uncertain. The lander’s actual orientation, local thermal conditions, intermittent sunlight, component margins and the timing of its powered periods are all possible factors to investigate—not established explanations. Its unusual posture may have contributed to the changing illumination that let it return, but the same off-nominal position also made its power and thermal behavior harder to predict. JAXA has said the exact reason for the prolonged survival is difficult to determine. The agency’s project summary discusses the value of the post-night data and that uncertainty.

Why JAXA stopped trying
After April 28, 2024, JAXA could not re-establish contact in later communication opportunities through July. The agency ended operations on August 23. That means SLIM should be described as an inactive, silent lander on the Moon—not as a craft known to have been physically destroyed, and not as a spacecraft still operating in 2026. Its mission’s operational chapter is over, even as engineers continue to study what it accomplished.
