Former Air Force special-operations member Jake Barber says the White House gave President Donald Trump an incomplete account of the 2024 New Jersey drone reports. But Barber’s allegation is not independently verified in the public material cited here, and it does not establish that Trump was deliberately misled—or that the reported objects were anomalous.
The dispute began after the White House said many of the drones reported over New Jersey had been authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Barber, described as a UFO whistleblower, said the activity was not FAA-approved and suggested someone had not told Trump the whole story. Those are claims, not established findings.
What the White House said
At a January 28, 2025 briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that, after research and study, the drones seen in large numbers over New Jersey had been authorized by the FAA for research and other reasons. She added that many sightings involved hobbyist or recreational operators, and said the information came directly from Trump. The official transcript records her remarks; the White House also posted video of the briefing.
That statement should not be stretched beyond its wording. It does not publicly identify every object or flight, say that every reported sighting involved a drone, or establish that the FAA itself operated the aircraft. Nor does it show that every flight was lawful. It is the administration’s explanation for at least some of the reported activity, not a public case file accounting for every report.

What Barber claimed—and what is missing
In a statement reported by Futurism on January 30, 2025, Barber disputed the FAA explanation. He said the New Jersey activity was not FAA-approved, claimed he had firsthand knowledge because he had been assigned to examine the situation from an FAA-violation perspective for the FBI, and suggested that someone was not presenting the whole story to Trump.
The available coverage does not include an assignment letter, case number, FBI or FAA confirmation of Barber’s role, or a public investigative report supporting his account. It also does not show that he had access to Trump’s briefing materials or identify the particular flights he says were unauthorized. Without such corroboration, his account remains an allegation about both the flights and the information provided to the president.
Futurism connected Barber’s comments with his earlier claims that, while serving in Air Force special operations, he encountered unusual debris he believed was linked to nonhuman intelligence. That background helps explain the “UFO whistleblower” label; it does not corroborate his separate New Jersey claim. A person’s credentials or other allegations cannot substitute for records tying specific flights to an investigation.

What federal agencies said about the reports
A joint statement from the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, FAA and Defense Department said agencies had received more than 5,000 reports and generated about 100 leads. They said they had identified nothing anomalous and did not assess the activity as a national-security or public-safety threat over New Jersey or elsewhere in the Northeast. The statement also noted a limited number of sightings near or over military facilities and described coordination and detection measures. Read the joint agency statement.
Those figures are reports and investigative leads, not a count of 5,000 separate aircraft. In a Pentagon briefing, officials warned that reports could duplicate one sighting and said there was no evidence at that time that the activity posed a national-security or public-safety threat or had a foreign connection. The Defense Department transcript provides that additional context.
“Nothing anomalous identified” is also narrower than “every sighting was identified.” The agencies’ public assessment weighs against claims of a demonstrated extraordinary or hostile event, but it does not publicly resolve every observation or establish that all reports described the same kind of object. Likewise, “not assessed as a threat” does not mean “fully explained.”

Why FAA authorization and identification are different
FAA rules govern use of the national airspace. For many ordinary drone operations, requirements include staying below 400 feet, keeping the aircraft within visual line of sight, avoiding other aircraft and hazards, and complying with restricted-airspace rules. The FAA’s drone guidance summarizes these obligations.

Conversely, seeing an object that an observer cannot identify does not establish that it was unauthorized. Authorization, identification and enforcement are separate questions: a statement that some flights were authorized does not by itself identify all operators or explain every reported light in the sky.
The FAA maintains a public page of reported UAS sightings and related records. Such reports are useful context, but a reported sighting is not automatically a confirmed drone or proof of what a particular observer saw.

What “UFO” does—and does not—mean here
In this story, “UFO” describes the framing of Barber’s broader claims, not a finding about the New Jersey reports. “Unidentified” means an observer or investigator has not identified an object; it does not mean extraterrestrial. Some reports may have concerned drones, while others may have involved conventional aircraft, helicopters, stars or other misidentified objects. The available agency statements do not establish that the sightings were nonhuman, and they also do not publish a detailed identification for every report.
Was Trump lied to?
The record supports three distinct statements, which should not be collapsed into one:

- The explanation was incomplete or wrong: Barber alleged this, but the material cited here does not establish it.
- Trump was deliberately lied to: That is a stronger claim about intent, and the cited material supplies no direct evidence for it.
A government account can be incomplete because of confusion, error, limited disclosure or poor communication without proving intentional deception. Establishing Barber’s version would require corroboration: for example, documentation of his assignment, records identifying specific unauthorized flights, or an official confirmation that directly conflicts with the White House’s account.
What remains unresolved
The public record cited here does not answer which specific flights the White House meant, whether every reported object was actually a drone, which sightings were confirmed by radar or other sensors, whether Barber’s claimed FBI role can be independently verified, or whether operators were identified or penalized. It also does not show whether any gap in the government’s account resulted from classification, confusion or error. Those are open questions—not proof of a hidden extraordinary explanation.
