There is no documented public API that exports the rendered contents of Apple Notes or directly reads another app’s private notes. If you need a picture of what is on screen, iOS screenshot controls or the documented ScreenCaptureKit flow are the relevant options. If you need to share a note’s contents, use Notes’ Share/Export interface or share data your own app already owns.
What “iPhone Notes screenshot API” can mean
Developers usually mean one of two different jobs:
- Capture a screen frame: save an image of the display, or of content selected through the system capture flow, while Notes is visible.
- Export a note: obtain the note’s text, attachments, formatting, or rendered appearance as a file or image.
Apple’s documented APIs cover screen capture and app-controlled sharing, but they do not establish a Notes-specific endpoint for exporting private note content. Treat these as separate problems when designing an app or workflow.
Can an app capture Apple Notes with ScreenCaptureKit?
ScreenCaptureKit is Apple’s framework for screen capture and streaming. SCScreenshotManager.captureImage returns one captured image frame from a stream. Your code supplies an SCContentFilter identifying the capture target and capture properties through the configuration. The API reference describes a frame from a capture stream; it does not describe exporting an Apple Notes document.
Apple’s current sample uses a system content-sharing picker. The person chooses either the entire display or content within the sample app, and the app starts a stream after receiving the resulting content filter. The sample is marked preliminary and states an iOS 27-or-later requirement. Verify availability, entitlements, behavior, and deployment-target support against the SDK you actually ship; do not assume the sample’s behavior is universal across iOS versions.

What the picker does
- Provides a system-controlled choice of capture source.
- Can represent full-display capture or in-app capture, which are distinct modes.
- Returns a content filter that the app uses to configure a stream.
What it does not do
- Grant general programmatic access to another app’s private data.
- Turn a Notes document into a structured record.
- Guarantee that every Notes screen can be captured in every OS version, device state, or security context.
If your product requirement is “let a person select something visible and capture a frame,” investigate the supported ScreenCaptureKit flow for your target OS. If it is “read or export the user’s Apple Note,” ScreenCaptureKit is the wrong abstraction.
How to take a screenshot of a note
For a person using iPhone
Open the note, arrange the page exactly as you want it to appear, then use the iPhone’s normal screenshot button combination for your model. Edit or mark up the resulting image and save or share it. This is a user-initiated screenshot, not an app-level Notes export API.
For an app that captures screen content
- Confirm that your minimum iOS version supports the ScreenCaptureKit APIs you intend to use. The cited Apple sample identifies iOS 27 or later and is preliminary.
- Present the system content-sharing picker rather than inventing a private source-selection mechanism.
- Use the picker callback to obtain the selected content filter.
- Configure a capture stream with the required dimensions, pixel format, frame rate, and other properties for your use case.
- Start the stream, receive video or image frames, and use
SCScreenshotManager.captureImagewhen a single frame is appropriate. - Stop and release the stream when the capture is complete. Handle cancellation and permission changes as normal user outcomes.
This route captures what the system permits the user to select. It should not be described as a Notes export feature, and you should not promise that it bypasses protected or unavailable content.
Can you export an Apple Note as an image?
Apple’s Notes interface provides a separate sharing workflow. Tapping the Notes share button opens the system activity view with activities such as sharing, copying, exporting, or adding markup. The exact activities depend on the data and context. This is the supported route for a person who wants to send or save a note, rather than a developer endpoint that returns a screenshot.

Notes UI route
- Open the note in Apple Notes.
- Tap the Share button.
- Choose the available sharing, copy, export, or markup activity that matches the desired output.
- Complete the destination app or file action and verify the result.
An export may preserve note data differently from a screen image. If exact visual appearance matters, use a user screenshot or an approved capture flow; if editable text and attachments matter, choose the relevant Notes sharing or export activity.
Sharing content from your own iOS app
If the note-like content belongs to your app, UIKit’s UIActivityViewController can present the standard activity view. Your app supplies the data, such as text, a file URL, an image, or a custom activity item. The activities offered depend on the type of data you pass.
This lets you share content your app already controls. It does not retrieve a note from Apple Notes, inspect another app’s database, or grant permission to capture another app’s private data. Design your model and export formats first, then pass the resulting items to the activity view.

Implementation pitfalls and troubleshooting
“I cannot find a Notes API”
That is expected. The documented scopes are screen capture, system sharing, and app-owned data—not a public Notes document-export endpoint. Reframe the requirement as capture, user export, or sharing your own content.

The picker does not show the source I expected
Check the OS version, device state, permissions, and whether you requested full-display or in-app capture. The picker controls source selection; your app cannot silently substitute an arbitrary private app target.
captureImage is unavailable or fails at runtime
Confirm that the deployment target and SDK expose the API, that the capture stream is configured and running, and that the content filter came from the supported picker flow. Handle cancellation, denied access, and stream interruptions instead of treating them as successful captures.
The result is a screen image, not an editable note
That is the expected type of ScreenCaptureKit output. Use Notes’ sharing/export activities for note data, or maintain a structured representation in your own app and share that representation.
The share sheet lacks an option
Activities are data-type dependent. Pass the correct text, image, or file item and test on the target OS with the destination apps installed. A share sheet cannot manufacture an exporter for data your app does not possess.

Privacy or compliance concerns
Tell users exactly what will be captured, show the system picker, avoid background assumptions, and minimize retention of captured frames. Never claim that a screen-capture permission is permission to read all Notes content.

- Choose a single frame when possible: a still image avoids the memory, bandwidth, and lifecycle cost of a continuous stream.
- Size deliberately: configure dimensions and pixel format for the destination instead of always retaining full-resolution frames.
- Expect user interruption: picker cancellation, app transitions, phone locks, and stream interruptions are ordinary states.
- Separate capture from export: image files, PDFs, editable text, and attachments have different validation and sharing requirements.
- Test the actual deployment range: preliminary sample code and newer APIs can differ from the behavior of the SDK used by your release build.
