There is no universal firmware updater or generic image that can safely update every JHL6340-based Thunderbolt NVMe enclosure. Get firmware from the enclosure manufacturer for the exact model and hardware revision. On Linux, fwupd can check for a vendor-published update, but it is not a general-purpose JHL6340 flasher. Do not use a firmware package intended for an Intel NUC, Dell, Lenovo, or other computer on an unrelated enclosure.

Why the controller name is not enough

JHL6340 identifies a controller, not the complete enclosure design. Firmware compatibility can depend on the enclosure’s board revision, nonvolatile-memory layout, retimers, device identifiers, and vendor configuration. Two products using the same Intel chip may therefore need different firmware. The enclosure maker—not the chip name alone—is the authority on which image, if any, is suitable.

First confirm what hardware you are looking at. JHL6340 and DSL6340 are different Intel designations, and an operating-system report may identify the computer’s host controller rather than the controller inside the enclosure. A single enclosure can also contain more than one Thunderbolt-related component. Record the exact enclosure model, hardware revision, serial number, reported controller and retimer identifiers, and current firmware or NVM version before searching for an update.

Separate the four firmware layers

  • NVMe SSD firmware belongs to the M.2 drive and is normally provided by the SSD maker.
  • Enclosure firmware belongs to components such as the enclosure’s Thunderbolt controller, retimer, or bridge. Look to the enclosure manufacturer.
  • Host-controller firmware belongs to the computer or Thunderbolt add-in card. Get it from the computer or card manufacturer.
  • Thunderbolt drivers and software are operating-system components; installing a newer driver does not normally supply missing enclosure firmware.

These updates are not interchangeable. Intel notes that storage-management software may not identify an SSD correctly through some bridges or enclosures; for the most reliable SSD firmware update, connect the drive directly to a motherboard M.2 slot or use a known-compatible adapter. See Intel’s guidance on SSD management tools.

Check for a supported update on Linux

Install and use your distribution’s fwupd package. With the enclosure connected to a Thunderbolt-capable port, run:

sudo boltctl list
fwupdmgr get-devices
sudo fwupdmgr refresh
fwupdmgr get-updates

If a matching update is offered, read its device identity and release notes carefully before running sudo fwupdmgr update. Proceed only if the listed device is the intended enclosure or host and the update’s compatibility information matches it. fwupd uses firmware published through the Linux Vendor Firmware Service (LVFS); it does not create a firmware payload for unsupported hardware. Its standard commands and project information are documented at the fwupd project.

Interpret the results narrowly:

  • An update is offered: Check that the product identity and release notes match the exact hardware before proceeding.
  • No updates are available: This means none is being offered through this path right now. The vendor may not publish firmware to LVFS, or the device may not be supported; it does not prove the firmware is current.
  • The host appears, but the enclosure does not: Host support does not establish enclosure support.
  • The SSD appears, but the enclosure does not: The drive may be manageable while the enclosure’s controller firmware is not.
  • Nothing relevant appears: Check the vendor’s support page and the physical connection rather than trying to force detection with an unrelated image.

A connected Thunderbolt device may need to be present for the host controller to show up in firmware tools. Linux’s Thunderbolt documentation describes these details and the risks of unsuitable firmware. Updating fwupd may improve device detection or update reliability, but it cannot provide a firmware image the vendor has not published. Use your distribution’s tested package for normal use rather than compiling a development version in the hope that it will support an otherwise unsupported enclosure.

On Windows, use the enclosure maker’s package

  1. Find the enclosure’s exact model, revision, and serial number.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s support page and look for enclosure, bridge, Thunderbolt, or NVM firmware for that precise product.
  3. Read the supported-model list and release notes. Do not rely on a controller-family match alone.
  4. Connect the enclosure directly to a Thunderbolt-capable port, then run the vendor’s updater as documented.
  5. Keep power and the connection stable. Do not unplug the enclosure or shut down during an update; restart or power-cycle only as the instructions specify.
  6. Afterward, verify the firmware version using the vendor’s directions.

Intel’s FwUpdateTool.exe guide describes updates for supported Intel NUC systems, not a generic updater for third-party enclosures (Intel NUC firmware guide). Likewise, Dell and Lenovo provide firmware packages for listed computer models and configurations, not for every device containing a related Intel controller. Check the Dell package’s supported systems or Lenovo’s product-specific guidance before using any OEM package. Intel also directs users to obtain Thunderbolt controller firmware from the system manufacturer in its security advisory.

Do not repurpose a raw firmware image

Linux documentation describes manual NVM flashing for particular hardware, including an Intel NUC example. The commands write a supplied image to a non-active NVM area and then request authentication:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sudo dd if=firmware.bin
  of=/sys/bus/thunderbolt/devices/0-0/nvm_non_active0/nvmem
echo 1 | sudo tee
  /sys/bus/thunderbolt/devices/0-0/nvm_authenticate

This is background, not a recipe for an unknown enclosure. The example assumes a firmware file and device path suited to the documented hardware. Do not substitute a random .bin, guess a sysfs path, or treat successful file copying as proof of compatibility. A wrong image, mismatched board revision, interrupted write, or failed authentication can make the device unusable. Even when a device briefly disappears during a supported update, that is not enough by itself to distinguish a normal activation cycle from a failed update. Follow the vendor’s recovery instructions and do not retry with different images.

Do not mistake a security threshold for an update target

Intel’s 2021 advisory lists version 46 as a minimum for JHL6340 in the context of that advisory’s issue matrix. It is not a universal firmware target or a downloadable image for all JHL6340 enclosures. Intel also states that it would not release mitigations for certain vulnerabilities affecting JHL6340 and other listed controllers. A security-advisory threshold, the latest firmware offered by an enclosure maker, and the host computer’s firmware version are different things; none tells you which image fits an enclosure without the vendor’s product-specific information. The advisory lists DSL6340 and DSL6540 as discontinued products as well.

If no enclosure updater turns up

  1. Check the enclosure maker’s support page, including archived downloads, for the exact model and revision.
  2. Ask the maker whether firmware exists specifically for that enclosure. Include its serial number, revision, current firmware, and relevant diagnostic output.
  3. Rule out the connection: try another suitable Thunderbolt cable and another Thunderbolt-capable host. USB-C is only a connector shape; it does not by itself guarantee Thunderbolt operation.
  4. Check whether the enclosure is operating in USB fallback mode, whether the host authorizes Thunderbolt devices, and whether the operating system actually detects the enclosure.
  5. Install host BIOS and Thunderbolt software updates only from the computer manufacturer’s support page; those are host updates, not a substitute for enclosure firmware.
  6. If the issue concerns the SSD itself, update it through a direct motherboard connection or a compatible adapter where possible.
  7. If the enclosure remains unstable and its maker offers no supported firmware, replacement is usually safer than experimenting with another product’s image.

If an update fails but the enclosure still works, preserve any logs, note the reported firmware version, and contact the vendor rather than repeatedly flashing. If it disappears during an update, consult the documented recovery path; do not assume either success or failure from disappearance alone.

Before you update

  • Have I confirmed the exact enclosure model and board revision?
  • Have I distinguished enclosure firmware from host-controller and SSD firmware?
  • Does the updater explicitly support this enclosure revision?
  • Is the image from the manufacturer’s supported process—not a forum, mirror, or unrelated OEM package?
  • Can I keep the connection and power stable, and accept the risk if recovery is not possible?
