No—not reliably. A site using the YIFY or YTS name may be the operation it claims to be, a proxy, or an unrelated lookalike. None of those labels guarantees safe ads or downloads, and using BitTorrent to obtain copyrighted movies without permission can also create privacy and legal risks. The practical advice is to avoid downloading from YIFY/YTS sites or mirrors; HTTPS, antivirus, and a VPN do not make them safe.
What “YIFY” and “YTS” mean—and why the name is not proof
YIFY was the name of an original movie-release group. The later YTS/YIFY-branded website operation is not simply the original group continuing unchanged: reporting by TorrentFreak describes later operators taking over the brand after the original group ended activity, as well as domain instability and copyright litigation. Today, separate sites, proxies, and copycats can all use similar names, logos, and catalogs. Familiar branding is not a reliable way to authenticate a site.
“Safe” also has several meanings. A site might load without an obvious infection yet still expose you to scam prompts, tracking, unsafe files, or copyright liability. Consider each risk separately:
- Malware: Ads, redirects, downloads, or software prompts could lead to harmful or unwanted software.
- Scams: A page may try to collect payment or credentials, or push a fake player, codec, extension, or security tool.
- Privacy: A site can collect browsing data, and peers in a public BitTorrent swarm can generally see participating network addresses.
- Legal exposure: A movie being available as a torrent does not mean its distribution is authorized.
- Authenticity and reliability: A working domain or copied catalog does not prove who operates it or what its links deliver.
The FTC advises against downloading movies and other media from unfamiliar sites or through peer-to-peer file-sharing sites because of malware and privacy risks. See its malware guidance and file-sharing alert.

Current domains: a status listing is not a safety certificate
A site calling itself the YTS/YIFY status page lists domains including YTS.BZ, YTS.GG, YTS.LT, YTS.AM, and YTS.AG as official or operational. That is a first-party claim, not independent confirmation that each domain is controlled by the same operator—or evidence that its ads, links, or files are safe.
Domains have changed over time. TorrentFreak reported that YTS.MX stopped resolving, followed by moves to YTS.LT and then YTS.BZ; it also reported extended downtime in May 2026 without an official operator explanation at the time. That history makes old bookmarks and search results especially unreliable. A domain being listed as operational means it can be reached, not that it is trustworthy.

YTS.GG deserves particular caution. A July 22, 2026 Gridinsoft assessment assigned it a very low trust score and flagged scam risk and blacklist warnings. Reputation services are not forensic proof that every page or file is malicious. But the warning is a sound reason not to enter personal information, install anything, or bypass browser security warnings there.

Other domains using combinations such as “YTS,” “YIFY,” “official,” “movies,” or “torrents” may be lookalikes. Automated reputation reports for yts-official.to and yify-official.org raise concerns; such scores are warning signals, not conclusive forensic findings. Proxies and mirrors can copy a catalog while changing the ads, redirects, scripts, tracking, or download links. No list of domains can reliably certify that a YIFY-branded site is safe.

How a risky page can trick you
Watch for fake play and download buttons, chains of redirects, repeated “verify you are human” prompts, requests to allow browser notifications, and claims that you must install a codec, player, extension, or download manager. Pop-ups that say your device is infected, urge you to call a number, or demand payment are not trustworthy security advice. Do not disable antivirus, browser protection, SmartScreen, or Gatekeeper to make a download work.
A .torrent file is generally metadata for a BitTorrent client; a magnet link is generally a pointer containing torrent metadata. The movie payload is separate. That distinction does not make the workflow safe: the web page, its ads and redirects, or the downloaded payload can all pose risks. A movie file should not require an installer or special codec supplied by a pop-up. Treat an executable, an unexpected archive, a password-protected archive, or a file with a misleading extension as suspicious. Do not assume every YTS video is malware—but do not assume a download is safe because its name ends in .mp4 or .mkv, either.

Copyright and IP-address risks in the United States
In the United States, downloading or uploading a copyrighted movie without authorization can infringe the copyright owner’s rights. BitTorrent commonly uploads pieces of a file to other peers while downloading, so participation may involve distribution as well as copying. The U.S. Copyright Office says statutory damages may reach $30,000 per work, or $150,000 for willful infringement, and attorney’s fees may also be available in some cases. These are legal maximums, not a prediction that a particular user will be sued or owe those amounts. Outcomes depend on the work, authorization, evidence, facts, and applicable law. Copyright rules and enforcement differ by country, so U.S. figures do not apply everywhere. In a public BitTorrent swarm, other peers can generally observe participating network addresses. An IP address alone does not establish who was using a connection, but peer-to-peer use should not be treated as anonymous.

Do a VPN or antivirus make YIFY safe?
No. A VPN may change the network address a website or peer sees, depending on the provider and configuration. It does not make unauthorized copying lawful, verify a domain, block every malicious script, or clean a downloaded file. A VPN is not a complete answer to the risks in this article.
Antivirus and endpoint protection can reduce some risks, but a clean scan is not proof of safety: a new or obfuscated threat may go undetected, and scams, notification abuse, credential collection, and privacy tracking are not all conventional malware. Keep devices and security software updated, but avoid suspicious sites and downloads rather than relying on a scan to certify them.
What to do if you already visited or downloaded something
If you only opened the page
- Close the tab. Do not engage with pop-ups, download buttons, or prompts.
- If you allowed notifications, remove that site’s permission in your browser’s notification or site-permissions settings.
- Remove any unfamiliar extension and check for unexpected changes to your home page, search engine, or startup pages.
- Update your browser, operating system, and security software, then run a full security scan.
- Review recent downloads and delete suspicious files without opening them.
If you downloaded a file but did not open it
Do not double-click it, extract an archive, or rename an executable to make it look like a video. Delete or quarantine it and run a security scan. If the site supplied a password to unlock an archive, treat that as another warning sign.

- If you suspect an active compromise, disconnect the device from the internet. Stop using it for banking, shopping, and password entry.
- From a separate, trusted device, change passwords you entered or that may be exposed, starting with your email and financial accounts. Enable multifactor authentication where available.
- If you entered payment details, contact your card issuer promptly and monitor the account; ask whether the card should be replaced.
- Run updated security software and follow its remediation instructions. If symptoms continue, use a known-clean backup or seek qualified malware-removal help; simply uninstalling the visible program may not remove everything.
The FTC lists unexpected redirects, changed home pages, pop-ups, crashes, slowdowns, and unfamiliar toolbars or icons as possible malware symptoms. Its recovery guidance recommends avoiding password or personal-information tasks on a suspected infected device and changing passwords from another computer.
A quick checklist for a YIFY-branded site
- A domain on a self-described status page may have a relationship to the operator; it is not a safety certification.
- HTTPS encrypts a connection; it does not prove honest ownership or safe content.
- Movie posters, a searchable catalog, and the word “official” are easy to copy, not proof of authenticity.
- Frequent domain changes, forced redirects, notification prompts, and “verification” loops are reasons to leave.
- A codec, player, extension, installer, executable, payment request, or account demand is a reason not to proceed.
- An antivirus warning should not be bypassed. A scan that finds nothing does not certify a site or file.
- Licensed distribution information is a better sign that a movie is lawful to access.
No checklist can turn an unauthorized download into a safe or lawful one. The safer choice is to find a licensed way to watch the movie. A discovery service such as JustWatch can help locate streaming, rental, or purchase options; choose your country because availability changes. Licensed services and marketplaces such as Netflix, Prime Video, Apple TV, YouTube Movies, and Google TV are examples, not guarantees of availability in every region.
