No temporary outage explains the missing Sora app or website. OpenAI discontinued Sora’s consumer web and app experiences on April 26, 2026. The separate Sora API is scheduled for discontinuation on September 24, 2026, so API users should check OpenAI’s official status page for current incidents.
Sora’s app and website are no longer available
If you are trying to open the old Sora website or mobile app, refreshing the page, reinstalling the app, clearing cookies, or changing browsers will not restore access. OpenAI says the consumer-facing Sora web and app experiences were discontinued on April 26, 2026.
That means a missing Sora interface, failed consumer login, or unavailable generation screen should generally be treated as a product shutdown—not as routine downtime. A ChatGPT Plus or Pro subscription does not restore the discontinued consumer Sora experience.
OpenAI’s original Sora announcement contains historical information about earlier access, video limits, and plans. Those details should not be treated as current availability or pricing.

The Sora API is a separate service
The API has a different timeline from the consumer app and website. OpenAI says the Sora API is scheduled to be discontinued on September 24, 2026. Until that date, an API request can still be affected by an ordinary service incident, an account problem, an endpoint issue, or a third-party integration failure.
Do not interpret this as a guarantee that every API account, model, endpoint, or request is working. Availability can vary by account, model, subscription, quota, and API feature.
How to check whether OpenAI’s API is having an outage
- Open status.openai.com.
- Look for an active incident affecting APIs, video generation, or a Sora-related component.
- Open the incident details and check the affected component, timestamp, and geographic or account qualifications.
- Interpret the status label: Investigating means OpenAI is examining the problem; Identified means the cause has been identified and mitigation is underway; Monitoring means a fix has been applied and recovery is being watched; Resolved means OpenAI considers the incident over.
- Subscribe to status notifications if the page offers an alert option.
A green status page is useful but not conclusive. It is an aggregate indicator and cannot prove that a particular account, API key, model, quota, or request is working. Conversely, a third-party platform can have a problem while OpenAI’s systems are operating normally.

What to do if a Sora API request fails
Use this sequence for an API-only problem:
- Check the status page first. If there is an active incident, record its start time and affected component.
- Record the failure precisely. Save the date, time zone, endpoint, HTTP status code, response body, and any request or correlation ID.
- Classify the failure. Determine whether it involves authentication, request submission, generation processing, result retrieval, rate limits, billing, quota, or account access.
- Retry once only after checking the incident status. Repeated retries can worsen rate-limit problems or create duplicate jobs if an earlier request actually succeeded.
- Try a minimal supported request. This can help separate a malformed request or unsupported option from a broader service failure, provided the relevant API documentation supports that test.
- Check the sunset date. A model or endpoint approaching the September 24 discontinuation date should not be the foundation of a new production workflow.
- Contact OpenAI support. Include the timestamp, endpoint, status code, response, request ID, account or project details, and steps already attempted.
When the problem is a third-party service
If Sora fails inside another application, the issue may belong to that platform rather than OpenAI. The provider may have removed the model, changed its integration, exhausted credits, restricted your account, or suffered its own outage.
For example, Runway says its Sora 2 and Sora 2 Pro third-party models were removed on April 3, 2026. Runway may still offer its own models and other third-party models, but it is not a way to regain Sora access.
Check the third party’s own help center and status page, and confirm the specific model name and availability date. Older search results can describe integrations that no longer exist.

Export your existing Sora creations
If you previously used Sora and need your work, go to sora.chatgpt.com/sunset. OpenAI’s instructions say to select Export; you will receive an email when the export is ready.

Do this promptly. OpenAI warns that data associated with Sora use may eventually be permanently deleted after the applicable export period. The exact timing of any final deletion window depends on OpenAI’s current data-handling process.

The trade-off is complexity: credit costs can vary by model and task, making it less straightforward for occasional users. Most importantly, Runway’s Sora models were removed in April 2026.
Adobe Firefly
Adobe Firefly may be a better fit for Adobe users, marketers, designers, and teams that want AI generation alongside Adobe Express and Photoshop on qualifying plans. It supports video, image, and audio generation.
Adobe’s product page has listed a free plan with limited daily generations, Firefly Standard at $9.99 per month, and Firefly Pro at $19.99 per month. It has also shown Pro Plus at a regular $49.99 per month and a limited-time promotional price of $34.97. Offers and included features can change, so verify the current terms before buying.
Firefly is not automatically the best choice for someone seeking only standalone cinematic text-to-video generation; its value may depend on whether you will use the wider Adobe ecosystem.
Why old Sora articles can be misleading
Many search results still describe Sora as an active consumer product, quote 2024-era access rules, or mix different generations and hosting arrangements. Treat claims about Sora 1, Sora Turbo, Sora 2, Sora 2 Pro, pricing, resolution, duration, and subscription access as historical unless they are tied to a current official source and a specific endpoint.
The key distinction is simple:
- Consumer Sora app and website: discontinued on April 26, 2026.
- Sora API: a separate service scheduled for discontinuation on September 24, 2026, with live incidents checked through OpenAI’s status page.
- Third-party access: controlled by each provider and subject to its own model availability, credits, and policies.
If you are a former Sora user, export your creations. If you are starting a new project, choose a currently supported video platform rather than waiting for the discontinued app to return.
