SideQuest is generally safe to use when you download it from its official website and install apps from reputable developers. But SideQuest is a sideloading tool, not a safety guarantee: each third-party app has its own security, privacy and compatibility risks. The main question is not just whether SideQuest is trustworthy, but whether the specific app and download source are.
What SideQuest is—and what it is not
SideQuest is an independent platform for Meta Quest content. Depending on the installation method, it can help you discover apps, install software on a headset, manage files and use other headset-management features. Its desktop app can install Android packages (APKs) and related OBB files. Start with SideQuest’s official setup and download page.
That makes SideQuest different from the Meta Quest Store. Sideloading means installing software outside the usual store-distribution route. It is not automatically malicious, and it does not necessarily mean the headset has been rooted or its firmware modified. But it does mean you may be taking responsibility for checking the software and its source rather than relying on the same store process you would for an official listing.

- The SideQuest program: the tool or service used to find, manage or install content.
- The app or APK: software made by a particular developer, whether listed on SideQuest or obtained elsewhere.
- The installation and account workflow: the website, links, permissions and credentials involved in getting the software onto the headset.
A trustworthy tool does not make every app installed with it trustworthy.

Is the SideQuest software itself safe?
SideQuest provides its software through its own website and maintains a public desktop-app repository on GitHub. Those are useful provenance signals, not proof that every third-party app distributed or linked through SideQuest is safe. Download only from SideQuest’s official site or its official project channel; avoid lookalike sites and third-party download portals.
Keep SideQuest updated. The U.S. National Vulnerability Database records CVE-2024-21625, a deep-link URL sanitization vulnerability affecting versions before 0.10.35. Under certain conditions, a malicious link could lead to remote code execution when a device was connected and the link was clicked inside the application. This is a documented issue in older versions, not evidence that SideQuest is inherently malware. Install the newest version offered for your operating system, and do not click unexpected links. Version numbers can vary by platform.

If your antivirus or operating system warns about an installer, do not reflexively dismiss the warning or disable protection. First confirm that you obtained the file from the official source and that it is the correct installer for your operating system. A warning alone does not establish whether a file is malicious or a false positive.
Are SideQuest apps safe?
They may be, but no blanket assurance applies to every APK. Apps can be experimental, early-access, community-made or distributed outside Meta’s store. As with other Android software, an app could contain malicious code, collect more data than expected, be abandoned without security fixes, or arrive through a fake or compromised download link. Android’s security guidance recommends careful permission handling and caution with code loaded from outside trusted distribution channels.

SideQuest says it tests submitted apps and games. Treat that as SideQuest’s description of its own process—not as an independent security certification, a formal code audit, or a guarantee that an app and all later updates are harmless. A listing does not establish that an app meets your privacy expectations. Nor does platform testing necessarily cover APKs you get from external links. Before installing, check the developer, the app’s purpose, its update history and support information, and any privacy policy. Look closely at permissions: access to a microphone, camera or files may make sense for some apps, but question access that seems unrelated to what the app does. If the developer publishes a file hash or signature, compare it with the downloaded file. If you cannot establish where an APK came from or who made it, do not install it.

Privacy: whose policy covers what?
SideQuest’s privacy policy describes information the service may collect, including account details, public contributions such as reviews or comments, IP-address and internet-activity information, and information inferred from activity. It also says the policy covers SideQuest’s own service—not third-party apps, websites, operating systems or services accessible through it. Read the SideQuest privacy policy for its stated practices, and assess each installed app separately.
In practice, there are several distinct privacy relationships: SideQuest may handle data associated with its website or account; an installed APK may collect its own data; and Meta’s headset operating system and account services have their own practices. One policy does not cover all three.
A SideQuest account is not the same as a Meta account. Follow the current setup flow on the official SideQuest site. Never enter your Meta password into a form on an unofficial page or share it with an app developer. If a page claiming to be SideQuest asks for your Meta password directly, close it and check that you are using the official site and any genuine Meta authentication screen.

How to use SideQuest more safely
- Start at the official site. Use SideQuest’s setup page to choose the Web Installer or desktop/Advanced Installer and the build for your operating system.
- Keep software current. Update SideQuest and your headset using their official channels. Do not rely on an old installer or follow an unknown link to a supposed update.
- Choose apps deliberately. Prefer the SideQuest catalog or a developer’s verified official page. Check the developer’s identity, app description, maintenance history, privacy information and support channel.
- Review permissions and source. Ask whether every permission fits the app’s purpose. Avoid anonymous file-hosting links, piracy sites and APKs whose publisher you cannot verify.
- Protect your accounts. Do not give your Meta credentials to an APK, developer or unofficial page. Use a unique password and multifactor authentication where available.
- Use your own device and connection. Connect your headset to a computer you trust, use a reliable cable and follow the current official setup steps. Disconnect it when installation is complete.
- Stop if something feels wrong. Do not turn off antivirus or browser protections just to install an unfamiliar file, and do not approve permissions you cannot justify.
For nontechnical users, children, or apps handling sensitive information, the Meta Quest Store or App Lab is usually the lower-effort choice. Store distribution does not eliminate every risk, but it reduces how much source-checking an individual user must do.
Does SideQuest violate Meta’s rules or void a warranty?
Do not treat blanket claims from forums as a definitive answer. Using a sideloading tool is not the same thing as pirating software or modifying headset firmware, but the policy and legal status of a particular app depends on how it was obtained and used. Piracy, fraud, cheating or attempts to circumvent protections raise different issues from installing legitimate experimental software. Meta’s current terms, developer rules and support policies control; check the rules that apply to your region and device. There is not enough basis here to promise that sideloading can never affect support, an app’s operation or an account.
If an app behaves suspiciously
- Uninstall the app from the headset and reboot it.
- Delete the APK from your computer’s Downloads folder and run your normal antivirus or endpoint scan.
- Review the app’s permissions and revoke access that is unnecessary.
- Check your Meta and SideQuest account activity. If you entered credentials on an untrusted page, change the affected password and secure the account.
- Contact the app developer, SideQuest support or Meta support as appropriate.
- Consider a factory reset only if the problem is serious or persists. Back up anything you can first; uninstalling an app should not be treated as a guarantee that every possible unwanted change has been removed.
When SideQuest is—and is not—a good fit
SideQuest is a reasonable choice if you want experimental or early-access Quest software, can identify a reputable developer, and are willing to check permissions, updates and compatibility. It is a poor fit if you plan to install anonymous APKs, expect every listing to receive Meta-level review, or are unwilling to keep software updated. For children, sensitive uses or the simplest support experience, prefer official-store options when the app is available there.
