If Roll20 is showing you a 503 Service Unavailable error, the request is temporarily not being handled—but that message alone does not establish that all of Roll20 is down or explain why. Roll20’s official status site records short Main Site interruptions in July 2026, but the available records do not confirm the specific outage described in reports or establish that Roll20 is currently down. Check the status page for the latest component-level update before troubleshooting.
Is Roll20 down right now?
Start with Roll20’s official status page. Check whether the Main Site, Info Site, or another listed component has an active incident. A Main Site status does not necessarily cover every part of Roll20, such as an already-open game, asset delivery, or voice and video.
Then compare that with independent reports, such as Downdetector’s Roll20 page, and with what other members of your group are seeing. A surge of reports can support the impression of a wider problem, but an outage tracker reflects user reports; it does not prove the technical cause. Historical Roll20 status records show several short Main Site interruptions in July 2026, but that history is not evidence of a continuing outage now.

What does a 503 error mean?
HTTP 503, or “Service Unavailable,” means a server or an intermediary handling the request is temporarily unable to provide a response. It can occur during maintenance, heavy load, or a problem with an upstream service or infrastructure. The error message does not identify which component failed, and a 503 displayed to one user does not prove that every Roll20 service or every player is affected.
Some players have described Roll20 errors as 503 or “gateway” errors in community reports. These are useful indications of what users encountered, not confirmation of a specific incident’s scope or cause. A 503 by itself is not evidence that your account has been banned, that campaign data has been lost, or that Roll20 has shut down. Do not attribute it to a particular provider, attack, or server problem without an official explanation.

Which Roll20 features may be affected?
An outage can be limited to one part of a service. The page you cannot load may be different from the component that is failing, and a problem with the Main Site does not automatically mean every feature is unavailable.
- Main site or login: Landing pages or authentication may fail while other services behave differently.
- Game launch or in-game play: You may be able to sign in but not open a game, or an active game may behave differently from the launch page.
- Marketplace, purchases, or asset loading: A game may load while purchases, uploads, or images do not.
- Voice, video, APIs, or integrations: These may have separate symptoms from site access or gameplay.
Downdetector groups reports into categories including login, game launch, gameplay, purchases, downloads or updates, and server connection. Use those categories to describe what is failing, not as proof that all those components are down.

How to tell whether the problem is on your side
- Check the official status page. Look for a current incident affecting the component you need. Status monitors cover selected services and may not reflect every feature, region, or network route.
- Check whether others are affected. Ask another player to try Roll20, preferably from a different location or network. The same failure across several participants points more toward a service-side problem than a single-device issue.
- Try a supported, up-to-date browser. Roll20’s network troubleshooting guidance recommends Chrome or Firefox.
- Open a private or incognito window. If Roll20 works there, an extension or stored browser data may be interfering.
- Temporarily disable extensions. Test with ad blockers, privacy tools, and script blockers turned off, then re-enable them one at a time if that resolves the issue.
- Clear Roll20 cookies and cached data, then retry. This may help with a local browser problem, but it will not restore a service-wide outage.
- Try another browser, device, or network. A mobile hotspot can help distinguish a home-network or ISP routing issue from a broader failure.
- Test VPN or proxy settings. Temporarily try without a VPN or proxy, then compare cautiously. A different result can indicate a routing, DNS, or network-path difference; it does not identify the underlying cause.
- Wait a few minutes before retrying. Repeated refreshes or login attempts are unlikely to help during an outage and can make it harder to tell whether service has recovered.
If other websites also fail, troubleshoot your connection first. If Roll20 alone fails across browsers and networks while other players report the same problem, local browser changes are less likely to help.
Optional session reset
Roll20’s troubleshooting guidance includes resetting a browser session through the session-destroy page. Use this only as a troubleshooting step for a suspected stale session, then sign in again. It is not a guaranteed fix for a 503 or a platform-wide outage.

What to do if a game is about to start
- Tell players what you know: whether the official status page shows an incident and which Roll20 feature is failing. Avoid presenting an unverified cause as fact.
- Switch to the group’s prearranged backup chat or voice channel.
- If needed, use a shared document for initiative, character notes, maps, or handouts, and agree on a temporary way to roll dice.
- For an active session, move to a backup virtual tabletop only if the group can do so without losing essential information or access. A different browser may resolve a local issue; it will not fix an outage affecting Roll20 itself.
- Avoid deleting campaigns, changing account settings, or making other irreversible changes because of a temporary error. If you have useful notes or materials available locally, keep them accessible for the session.
When Roll20 returns, confirm that the game loads and check that characters, handouts, maps, and assets you need are available before resuming. The evidence here does not indicate data loss, but a quick check is sensible after an interruption.
What if the status page says Roll20 is operational?
A green status indicator is useful, but it may not cover every account, feature, region, or route between your network and Roll20. If the status page shows normal operation, other players can connect, and the issue persists across supported browsers and networks, contact Roll20 Support. Its help center includes technical support and sections for issues such as login, performance, uploads, chat, APIs, and billing.

Include a clear description of what fails, when it happens, what troubleshooting you tried, and your browser name and version. Roll20’s network guidance also asks for speed-test results where relevant. If the problem concerns a specific campaign, purchase, or account, identify that rather than reporting only that “Roll20 is down.”
When will Roll20 be back?
Use an estimated restoration time only if Roll20 publishes one for the affected service. The available status records confirm past brief interruptions, but they do not provide a verified recovery estimate for the incident described by 503 reports. Check the official status page and Roll20’s official support or social channels for updates; do not treat an old monitoring snapshot or a user post as a current restoration notice.
