Roblox has two very different camera-based features that people often call “face tracking.” Avatar facial animation is described by Roblox as opt-in, processed on the device, and deleted from temporary memory after use. Facial age estimation is a separate, more sensitive age-check process involving facial media and Roblox’s service provider, Persona.
That makes avatar animation a relatively low-risk privacy choice for users comfortable granting camera access—but facial age estimation involves a meaningful data and access trade-off. Neither feature makes Roblox completely safe for children.
The short answer
If you mean facial animation for your avatar, Roblox says the camera video and facial-movement analysis stay on your device, are used to generate avatar animation, and are then erased. Roblox also says the data is not sent to Roblox or third parties and is not used to identify you personally. Those are Roblox’s published practices, not an independent technical audit. If you mean facial age estimation, the answer is more cautious. Roblox analyzes a facial image and video to estimate an age group, and says it currently uses Persona for this process. Roblox says the images and video are deleted after processing and that it does not receive or store the biometric data generated by age estimation. However, Persona’s processing and Roblox’s broader facial-media disclosures create a different privacy picture from local avatar animation.

For children, camera privacy is only one issue. Turning off face tracking does not prevent text chat, voice chat, scams, inappropriate content, unwanted contact, or requests to move conversations off-platform.
What “Roblox face tracking” can mean
Roblox uses camera input for several purposes:
- Animation Capture – Face: Captures facial movements to create animation keyframes.
- Avatar animation: Uses the camera in real time so an avatar can blink, smile, or otherwise mimic the player in supported experiences.
- Lip syncing: Infers mouth movements associated with speech to animate the avatar.
- Facial age estimation: Uses a facial image and video to place an account into an age group for safety and communication controls.
- ID verification: Uses a government-issued photo ID and a selfie as a separate age-check route.
The first three are animation features. The last two are age or identity verification. They should not be treated as one “face scan.”
What happens to video used for avatar animation?

According to Roblox, facial-animation analysis happens entirely on the user’s device. The camera video and movement analysis remain in temporary memory only as long as needed to generate the animation. Roblox says the video does not leave the device and is not shared with Roblox or third parties.
For real-time avatar animation, Roblox says generated keyframes are deleted as they are used and cannot be saved or shared through that feature. The facial-animation notice was last updated on July 12, 2023, so these statements should be understood as Roblox’s disclosed policy rather than proof of an independently verified implementation. Its broader privacy policy also warns that camera-enabled features and uploads can involve collection, processing, or storage when needed to provide a feature or perform safety processing. “Processed locally” also does not mean the camera cannot physically see anything. Frame it so it cannot capture other people, private documents, or sensitive parts of your home, and revoke camera permission when the feature is not needed.
Avatar tracking versus facial age estimation

Roblox’s support page lists age groups including 5–8, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20, and 21+. Facial age estimation is therefore not facial recognition in the ordinary sense: its stated purpose is to estimate an age category, not identify the person. But a face image or face geometry can still be considered biometric information under some laws. (How does Roblox estimate my age?)

What happens during a facial age check?
According to Roblox’s current support documentation, an eligible user can generally begin from:
- Log in to Roblox.
- Open Settings. On desktop, select the gear icon; on mobile, open More (…) → Settings.
- Open Account Info.
- Under Age Group, choose Continue with selfie.
- If eligible, choose Continue with ID instead.
The facial-estimation process uses a selfie-style image and video to estimate the account’s age group. Roblox says the images and video are deleted after the age-assurance process is complete and that it does not receive or store the biometric data generated by the age-estimation process. There is important additional nuance for ID and facial-media processing. Roblox’s biometric and facial-media notice says Persona processes face geometry for identity verification and may retain biometric data for up to 30 days after collection unless a longer period is legally required. It also says Roblox may access submitted ID photos and selfies for training, product improvement, and compliance purposes. That disclosure is why it is inaccurate to say, broadly, that Roblox never sees your face or that no facial data ever leaves your device. (Roblox Biometric and Facial Media Data Privacy Notice)

Roblox announced on January 7, 2026, that age checks were being rolled out globally wherever chat is available. Roblox’s support materials state that communication features—including Experience chat, Voice chat, and Friends—require a successful age check, subject to regional and product differences. “Mandatory” mainly means mandatory for particular communication or age-gated features. It does not necessarily mean every player must scan their face simply to launch or play every Roblox experience. Account age, region, parental consent, product eligibility, and transition rules can change what is required. If you decline the check, you may still play some experiences but lose access to chat or other social features.
What if the age estimate is wrong?
Age estimation is not guaranteed to be accurate. Roblox says a user who reports being over 13 but is estimated to be under 13 may receive a 48-hour grace period before the change becomes final, unless the result is accepted immediately. ID verification can be used to correct an age result, while a linked parent may be able to update a child’s birthday, generally only once. (Roblox age-change guidance)
A false under-13 result can restrict chat and other features. A mistaken older result could give a younger user access to communication settings that are not appropriate for them, which is why an age check should not be treated as proof that every interaction is safe.
Options if you do not want a face scan
- Use government-ID verification: Roblox says this option is available to eligible users aged 13 and older. It requires a qualifying government-issued photo ID and a selfie, so it is not a privacy-free alternative.
- Use linked parental controls: Depending on the account, age, and region, a linked parent may be able to manage birthday and communication permissions.
- Leave communication disabled: You can decline chat or voice features rather than provide facial media, although some social functions will remain unavailable.
- Deny camera permission: Device-level permission controls can block camera-dependent features. This may also prevent avatar animation or an age check from working.
- Disable avatar animation: Turn off the camera-based avatar setting if expressive facial movement is not worth the permission.
No option bypasses every age requirement for every account. Availability varies by country, age, account status, platform, and feature.

How to reduce camera and chat risks
For avatar facial animation
- Ask which feature is requesting camera access before allowing it.
- Enable the camera only when the player wants the animation feature.
- Use a private, carefully framed camera view.
- Check the device’s camera indicator.
- Revoke camera permission afterward if the feature is not regularly needed.
- Do not confuse avatar animation with facial age estimation.
For parents
- Use a linked parent account rather than relying only on the child’s account settings.
- Review Settings → Parental Controls → Settings You Manage → Communication for a linked child account.
- For an account managed directly, review Settings → Privacy & Content Restrictions → Communication.
- Restrict Experience chat, direct chat, Friends chat, Party, and Voice Chat as appropriate.
- Set content-maturity, spending, and screen-time limits.
- Keep voice chat off unless there is a clear, supervised reason to use it.
- Recheck settings after major updates or age-group changes.
- Tell children never to share their real name, address, school, phone number, passwords, private photos, or financial information.
- Teach them to report suspicious behavior and never move a conversation to another app at a stranger’s request.
Roblox’s exact labels and available controls can vary by account and region. Its Parental Controls FAQ and Safety Center provide the current account-management guidance.
Final verdict
Avatar facial animation is generally reasonable for privacy-conscious users who want expressive avatars, are comfortable granting camera access, and accept Roblox’s statement that processing is local and temporary.
Facial age estimation deserves a higher privacy threshold. It is not a harmless cosmetic effect: it uses facial media to classify age, involves Persona, can affect chat access, may be repeated, and can be wrong. Choose it only if the resulting features are worth that trade-off; otherwise consider ID verification if eligible, parental controls, or leaving communication disabled.
Most importantly, camera privacy and child safety are separate. Disabling face tracking does not remove chat, voice, scams, inappropriate content, or contact with strangers. Use communication restrictions, maturity controls, spending limits, supervision, and regular conversations about online safety alongside any camera decision.
