ReShade is generally safe when downloaded from reshade.me and used with trusted shaders in an offline or permitted game. It is not inherently malware, but it injects graphics files into a game directory, which can trigger antivirus heuristics, cause crashes, or violate an online game’s anti-cheat rules. The safe decision depends on the download source, the files you load, and the specific game’s current policy.
What ReShade does
ReShade is an open-source post-processing injector. It hooks into a game’s rendering pipeline so shaders can alter the final image. Typical effects include sharpening, color correction, ambient occlusion, depth of field, film grain and HDR-style adjustments. The official site lists support for Direct3D 9, Direct3D 10/11/12, OpenGL and Vulkan.
“Injector” describes the technical method, not malicious intent. ReShade normally places a graphics API DLL, configuration files and shader folders beside the game’s executable. That placement lets it load when the game starts, but it also explains why security software and anti-cheat systems may inspect it.
The official site currently shows ReShade 6.7.3, released February 28, 2026. Its listed Windows support is Windows 7 SP1, 8.1, 10 or 11 with .NET Framework 4.8. ReShade is released under the BSD 3-Clause license, and its source code is published at github.com/crosire/reshade.

Is the official installer malware?
The official ReShade installer is generally trustworthy when obtained directly from https://reshade.me/. The website links to the project’s source repository and publishes an X.509 signature thumbprint for the downloadable installer. Open-source availability and a published signature improve transparency, but they do not make every file called “ReShade” genuine.
Download safely
- Type reshade.me yourself or verify the browser domain before downloading.
- Avoid random mirrors, “free download” portals, repacked installers and preconfigured bundles.
- Scan the fresh download with your security software and inspect its digital signature when available.
- If several reputable security engines detect the file, stop and investigate. Do not assume every detection is harmless.
- Never install an unknown DLL, executable, script or add-on merely because a preset says it is required.
ReShade’s troubleshooting guidance notes that heuristic antivirus and browser-protection systems can flag new releases before their reputation is established. That explains how a false positive can occur; it does not prove that an unofficial or modified installer is safe. Do not permanently disable antivirus protection or create a broad exclusion to force an installation.
Can ReShade get you banned?
There is no universal answer. Ban and launch-blocking risk depends on the game’s current rules, anti-cheat implementation, ReShade build, enabled effects and any third-party add-ons.

Whitelist claims are not permission
A ReShade developer wrote in a forum discussion that versions from 4.3.0 onward had been whitelisted by Easy Anti-Cheat, while warning that individual games could still forbid or block ReShade. Rust is a clear prohibition
Facepunch says Rust banned ReShade beginning January 13, 2025, because it could improve visibility or otherwise provide an unfair advantage. Its support instructions are to remove all ReShade files from the Rust Steam directory and verify the game files: Rust’s official support article.
VAC and competitive games
Valve’s general VAC guidance says third-party modifications designed to give one player an advantage can be treated as cheats or hacks: Valve’s VAC FAQ. It is not a ReShade-specific whitelist. Cosmetic effects may be acceptable in one title and prohibited in another, so the publisher’s rule takes priority over community assumptions.
What counts as higher risk
- Depth-based visibility, zoom, crosshairs or enemy highlighting in competitive play.
- Self-compiled builds with restrictions removed.
- Renamed DLLs intended to evade detection.
- Add-ons that read or change game data.
- Presets packaged with executables, loaders or password-protected archives.
The official ReShade site says depth information is automatically disabled during multiplayer. Modified builds or third-party tools may differ, so that safeguard is not a promise for unofficial software.
Does merely having ReShade installed create a ban risk?
Keeping the installer in your Downloads folder is different from placing ReShade files in a game’s directory, and that is different again from loading them while an online game runs. Practical anti-cheat risk is normally tied to files present in or loaded by the target game. Nevertheless, a launcher can inspect its own installation directory and policies can change. For a prohibited title, remove the files rather than relying on a disabled toggle.

Can ReShade damage Windows or a game?
ReShade is not a system-wide graphics driver replacement, and its usual installation can be removed without replacing the game’s executable. Its DLL injection can nevertheless complicate troubleshooting. Common symptoms include launch failures, black screens, crashes, missing effects, graphical artifacts and conflicts after a game or graphics API update.
ReShade’s troubleshooting documentation identifies wrong executable or API selections and conflicts with tools such as MSI Afterburner and RivaTuner. If a game worked before installation, first remove or rename ReShade files and confirm that the unmodified game launches. Other overlay, capture and monitoring utilities may also conflict.
Performance impact
There is no universal FPS penalty. A simple sharpening or color pass may have a small cost, while ambient occlusion, depth of field, high-quality anti-aliasing, ray-traced effects and many shader passes can consume substantial GPU time. Resolution, GPU, engine, shader complexity and effect count all matter.
- Enable one effect at a time.
- Compare average frame rate and frame-time consistency, not only the headline FPS.
- Disable depth-heavy effects first when performance or compatibility deteriorates.
- Keep a baseline screenshot and settings profile so you can identify the expensive effect.
Are presets and shaders safe?
A .ini preset is usually configuration data, but it can reference shader files, textures, LUTs, add-ons or external dependencies. The supply-chain risk comes from those additional files, not from the word “preset.” ReShade’s official site tells creators not to redistribute ReShade binaries or shader files and to link users to the official website instead.

Prefer known shader repositories and inspect every archive before copying it into a game folder. Treat DLLs, executables, scripts, “performance patches” and add-ons as higher risk than ordinary shader source or image assets. Reject any preset promising wall visibility, enemy highlighting, zoom or other competitive advantages.
Safest installation procedure
- Download the installer from https://reshade.me/.
- Run it and select the exact game executable, not a launcher or similarly named file.
- Choose the correct rendering API if detection is wrong.
- Use the standard build by default. The separate full add-on-support build should be reserved for a specific, trusted need.
- Install only the shader repositories and effects you actually need.
- Keep the installer and downloaded shader archives outside the game directory.
- Test first in an offline or single-player environment, with a clean backup or restore path.
- For an online game, confirm the publisher’s current policy before launching with ReShade present.

Antivirus quarantine
Confirm the domain, inspect the exact filename and signature, download a fresh copy and rescan. If the file is independently verified but still blocked, submit it to the security vendor. Use only a narrowly scoped, temporary exception; do not weaken protection globally.
The game crashes or shows a black screen
Remove or rename ReShade files and test the clean game. If it then works, add effects back one at a time. Check the executable and API selection, disable conflicting overlays such as MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner, and reinstall only after the game itself is stable.

An anti-cheat error appears
Remove ReShade from that game’s directory, verify files through Steam, Epic Games Store or the relevant launcher, and follow the publisher’s support instructions. Do not try an older, renamed or modified build as a bypass.
A preset looks wrong
Check whether it requires a particular shader repository, texture or LUT, game version, API or effect order. Depth shaders do not work universally, and unavailable depth data can produce incorrect results.
How to uninstall ReShade completely
Preferred method
Run the ReShade setup tool again, select the same executable and rendering API, then choose its uninstall option.
Manual removal
If the setup tool is unavailable, remove only ReShade files from the game’s directory. Depending on the API, these can include:

Identify the correct DLL carefully; deleting an unrelated game DLL can break the installation. After removal, launch the game. If it still fails, use the platform’s file-verification feature and restore only files identified as missing. Who should use ReShade?
- Single-player gamer: Usually a reasonable choice from the official source with trusted shaders.
- Visual-mod enthusiast: Use the standard build, keep backups and avoid executable-based add-ons.
- Competitive multiplayer player: Use it only when the game’s current rules explicitly allow it.
- High-value account or tournament player: Avoid it unless the publisher clearly permits the exact build and use case.
- Player seeing an antivirus warning: Verify the source and signature; never assume every detection is a false positive.
Verdict
ReShade itself is generally safe software, not automatic malware or a cheat. The meaningful risks are downloading a tampered copy, loading untrusted add-ons, destabilizing a game, or violating a specific anti-cheat policy. Download the official build, keep effects cosmetic, test offline first, and remove it before entering any game that prohibits graphics injectors.
