As of August 18, 2026, Overleaf’s official status page reports all systems operational. It lists the website, compiling, documentation, Git Access and AI features as operational, with no Overleaf incident listed for August 18. That does not rule out a problem affecting an individual account, project, browser or network. The most recent listed issue was with GitHub synchronization, not a confirmed outage of the whole Overleaf service.

What Overleaf officially reported
Overleaf’s status page tracks different parts of the service separately, so an operational website does not necessarily mean every feature or integration is working for every user. Check the component relevant to your error: the Overleaf website, compiling, Git Access, or another listed service. Read the latest incident entry and its timestamp rather than relying on an undated outage claim.

It advised users not to link or unlink repositories or perform GitHub-related operations until the issue was resolved. Overleaf marked it resolved at 19:21 UTC on August 17. This was a third-party integration issue; it did not confirm that the Overleaf website or editor was broadly offline.

Is the error an Overleaf outage or a local problem?
A “server error” describes what you see, not why it happened. A genuine service disruption is one possibility, but so are an expired session, browser data, an extension, a restricted network, DNS trouble, a blocked file-delivery request, a problem with one project, or an external integration such as GitHub or Dropbox.
- Possible wider outage: the status page lists an active incident or multiple components as degraded, and the same problem occurs across browsers, devices and networks.
- Possible browser issue: a private window or different browser works, or the problem disappears after temporarily disabling an extension.
- Possible network restriction: Overleaf works on a mobile hotspot but not on a campus or workplace connection, or the PDF and logs fail while the editor loads.
- Possible project-specific issue: the dashboard and other projects work, but one project will not open.
- Possible integration issue: editing works, but GitHub or another synchronization feature does not.
These are diagnostic clues, not proof of a cause. Unless Overleaf identifies an incident, do not assume a particular service or network is responsible.

Try these checks in order
- Check the official status page. Look at the website and the feature involved—especially compiling or Git Access—and read any incident details and update time. If an incident is active, avoid repeatedly changing integrations or making risky project changes while it is being investigated.
- Protect visible work before refreshing. If the editor still shows text that may not have synchronized, copy important changes into a local text file first. A failed request does not by itself mean the project is lost, but recovery of edits depends on whether they synchronized.
- Refresh once, then test a private window. A refresh can clear a transient loading failure. A private or incognito window is a useful test for stale cookies or extension interference; it is not necessarily a permanent fix.
- Try another browser or device. Make sure the browser is up to date and supported. Temporarily disable extensions or plugins that may interfere, particularly ad blockers, download managers, firewall tools or proxy-related extensions. Re-enable them after the test.
- Try another network. A mobile hotspot can help distinguish a network or institutional proxy restriction from a service-side problem. If the problem appears to be DNS resolution, Overleaf suggests trying a different DNS service, subject to your institution’s or organization’s network rules.
- Clear browser cookies and cache if browser tests point that way. Overleaf recommends this for access, loading and display problems. Clearing cookies may sign you out and remove browser state, so preserve visible work first. Repeatedly clearing cache is unlikely to help once the same failure is confirmed across devices and networks.
- Check firewall or proxy access when files will not load. Overleaf says the editor needs access to
compiles.overleafusercontent.com. This is particularly relevant if the editor opens but a PDF, compilation log or download does not. On a managed network, ask the IT administrator to check whether the domain is blocked; do not try to bypass institutional controls.

If the editor opens but the PDF does not
First check whether compilation actually completed. If the PDF still does not display correctly, try Overleaf’s Browser PDF Viewer instead of the Overleaf PDF Viewer. A broken viewer or blocked PDF request can look like a failed compile even when the document compiled successfully.
If neither the PDF nor compilation logs load, check your network or firewall access to compiles.overleafusercontent.com. If compilation itself fails, note the error shown in the log and check the status page’s compiling component.

If only one project will not open
Open another project to see whether the problem is limited to one document. Overleaf’s guidance for project-loading problems identifies unusually large .tex files as one possible contributor to lost connections, including serialization problems; that is a documented possibility, not a diagnosis of your project.
Before changing files, preserve a local copy if you can. If a source file is exceptionally large, consider splitting it into smaller files with commands such as input or include. If the project still fails, contact Overleaf and include its URL or project ID so support can identify it.
If GitHub synchronization is failing
Check Overleaf’s incident page for a GitHub-specific notice, and check GitHub’s own service status if needed. A working editor with failing repository operations points to an integration problem rather than necessarily a whole-site outage. During a confirmed provider incident, follow Overleaf’s warning: do not link or unlink repositories or perform GitHub-related operations until the incident is resolved. Avoid repeated synchronization attempts that could complicate recovery.

Keep working if Overleaf remains unavailable
The Overleaf-hosted editor is not a fully offline editor: its compilation runs on Overleaf’s servers, so it cannot compile while offline. If you can access the project, download its source and keep edits in a local copy. You can compile locally with a LaTeX distribution such as TeX Live or MiKTeX, and use latexmk if it is installed and configured.
Local compilation may differ from Overleaf if package or tool versions differ. Keep a backup of local changes and do not overwrite or resynchronize files until you have compared copies and confirmed which one contains the latest work. If Git synchronization was already configured and remains available, it may provide another route to a local copy; it is not a guarantee during a provider or network incident. When to contact Overleaf support
Contact support if the issue persists across browsers or networks, a single project remains inaccessible, or the status page shows no relevant incident but the error continues. Overleaf says you can use the Contact Us link at the bottom of the project menu or email [email protected].
Include your operating system and version, browser and version, the exact error and when it occurred, whether the dashboard and other projects load, whether compilation, PDF viewing, login or synchronization is affected, and the troubleshooting steps you tried. Include the affected project URL or ID when relevant. Do not send credentials.
