No—the original Omegle is no longer operating. It shut down on November 9, 2023. While it was online, its anonymous random-chat design exposed users, especially children, to foreseeable risks including sexual content, grooming, recording, harassment, scams and privacy exposure. A site using the Omegle name today is not automatically the original service or a safe replacement.
What Omegle was—and what happened to it
Omegle was a free website that randomly paired strangers for text or video conversations. Users could enter interests to help find a match, but they generally did not know who was on the other side. The service also had an “unmoderated” video area. Its peer-to-peer video system required a user’s IP address, and chat text could be copied or downloaded. Those design features could make it harder to control who contacted you or where a conversation went.
eSafety lists Omegle’s stated minimum age as 13+, but that was a platform rule, not proof of a user’s age. Its guide says the service did not reliably verify ages. eSafety’s Omegle guide also identifies imitation services, including OmegleMe!, Omegle.life and OmeTV. A familiar name does not establish who operates a site or how it handles safety and personal data.
Is Omegle still operating?
No. eSafety identifies November 9, 2023, as the date the original Omegle shut down. Any site currently using “Omegle” in its name should be treated as a separate service, imitation or successor unless its operator can be independently established. Do not enter passwords, payment details, identity documents or intimate information merely because a site uses the name. eSafety’s service overview records the shutdown date and names some imitation services.

Why was Omegle unsafe?
The problem was not that every conversation caused harm. It was that random contact with strangers, including live video, created predictable risks while the safeguards described by regulators were inadequate—particularly for children.
Children could be matched with unknown adults
In its account of an inquiry into Omegle, Australia’s eSafety Commissioner said the service had no age verification, no system preventing children from communicating with unknown adults, and no in-service abuse-reporting option at that time. Omegle later added an age-confirmation pop-up, but eSafety considered the measures insufficient. eSafety also reported that Omegle said it had three video moderators and one text moderator despite as many as 40,000 simultaneous users. These findings describe the deficiencies disclosed during that inquiry, not necessarily every version of the interface. eSafety’s shutdown statement explains the inquiry and the company’s reported moderation staffing.
A minimum-age statement, an app-store age rating, a self-entered birthday, age assurance and actual age verification are not interchangeable. Nor does age checking alone make a service child-safe: moderation, reporting, enforcement and safeguards against adult-minor contact also matter.

Sexual content, harassment and grooming
Users could encounter nudity, sexual solicitations, harassment or links to sexualized material. In video chat, explicit material can appear before a user has time to react. Grooming can be less obvious: a stranger may start with friendly attention, ask personal questions, build trust and gradually introduce sexual topics or pressure the young person to keep the interaction secret. eSafety’s guide describes Omegle’s features and risks; its guidance on anonymous random-chat platforms explains risks to children.
Sextortion and pressure to move elsewhere
Someone may pressure a user to send an intimate image or perform on camera, then threaten to share the material unless the person sends more, pays money or follows further demands. The FBI has warned about online groups coercing minors into producing sexual material and using threats, fear and humiliation to control victims; that warning describes a broader online threat, not a claim that every such incident happened on Omegle. The FBI’s warning outlines the pattern.
A stranger may also ask to switch to Snapchat, Instagram, Discord, Telegram, a phone number or another private channel. The move can give that person a more persistent way to contact the user, often with less visibility into the interaction. A claimed age or identity is not proof.

Recording, privacy exposure and suspicious links
A user can capture a video or screenshot using built-in software or another device, even when a chat service has no obvious recording button. Text can be copied or downloaded. The service’s peer-to-peer video technology required the user’s IP address; an IP address can create privacy and approximate-location risks, but it does not automatically reveal a person’s exact home address. eSafety’s guide describes the chat and video features.

The available evidence does not establish that every Omegle-style clone distributes malware. Treat unexpected links as untrusted, and assess a replacement site’s ownership, privacy policy, security practices and reporting options rather than assuming all clones are identical.
Why did Omegle shut down?
The founder’s shutdown announcement cited misuse of the service, the burden of trying to combat abuse, and the financial and psychological cost of operating it. The closure followed safety scrutiny and litigation; it should not be reduced to a claim that a lawsuit alone caused the shutdown. eSafety’s statement discusses the closure and safety concerns, while Omegle’s archived legal page provides the company’s account.

A civil case brought by a survivor alleged that a minor had been connected through the platform with an adult who sexually exploited her. News reports described a lawsuit seeking $22 million in damages and a settlement in which permanent shutdown was a major term. The $22 million figure is a reported damages claim, not a confirmed settlement payment. Allegations in a case should not be presented as findings that every user or interaction was abusive. “Alternative” is not a safety rating. A new or successor service should be judged on its own controls, accountability and availability in your country—not on the name it uses or its app-store rating. Check these points before allowing a child to use it or sharing any information:

- Moderation: Does the service explain how it handles video, audio, text, links and private messages? Video screening can miss grooming or coercion.
- Reporting and blocking: Can a user report or block someone during a chat, and does the company explain how it handles reports?
- Privacy and accountability: Is there a clear operator, safety policy, privacy policy, support contact and data-deletion process? What does it say about IP addresses, chat records and recordings?
- Availability and track record: Is it available in your country, and have regulators or app stores issued relevant warnings or restrictions?
There are trade-offs: less account information may mean less data collection, but can make repeat offenders harder to identify; age checks may help separate age groups while requiring sensitive information. A platform’s claimed moderation coverage does not guarantee that it will catch manipulation or abuse.

OmeTV illustrates why geography and date matter
In October 2025, Australia’s eSafety Commissioner said Apple and Google had removed OmeTV from Australian app stores after concerns that predatory adults were using it to groom and sexually exploit children. That is a specific Australian regulatory action, not evidence that the service is unavailable worldwide or that every user has the same experience. eSafety’s announcement describes the action and its stated concerns.
What parents can do
Start with a calm, non-shaming conversation. A child who has been exposed to sexual content or targeted by an adult needs help, not blame. eSafety recommends combining parental controls with open conversations about online risks. Its guidance for parents offers further advice.
- Ask what happened and whether the person asked for secrecy, personal details, sexual content or a move to another app.
- Review browser history, installed apps, privacy settings and recent contacts together when appropriate.
- Use device controls to restrict unknown app installations, web access, downloads and camera permissions where supported.
- Set clear rules: do not share a full name, school, address, live location, phone number, passwords or intimate content with strangers.
- Agree that the child can leave a chat and tell a trusted adult without being punished for having been targeted.
- Check the actual operator and safety features of any supposed Omegle successor before permitting access.
Monitoring software can support access limits or provide alerts, but it cannot verify every stranger’s identity or intentions, reliably interpret every interaction, or replace parental involvement. Coverage varies by device, operating system and service; covert or punitive monitoring can also undermine trust.

What to do if someone harasses, grooms or threatens you
- End the interaction. Do not argue, negotiate, send more images or comply with demands. Do not click links from the stranger.
- Preserve what you safely can. Save usernames, profile details, timestamps, URLs and threatening messages or screenshots. Do not put yourself at risk to collect evidence.
- Block and report. Use the current service’s tools if available. If the person has moved to another app, report and block them there too.
- Tell someone you trust. If you are under 18, tell a trusted adult. A person being targeted is not at fault for someone else’s coercion or abuse.
- Report serious concerns. In the United States, report suspected child sexual exploitation or online enticement to NCMEC’s CyberTipline. The FBI’s IC3 guidance addresses coercive online groups and extortion. Contact local law enforcement immediately if there is an imminent threat.
If an intimate image was taken when the person was under 18
NCMEC’s Take It Down is intended to help stop or remove online sharing of nude or sexually explicit images taken when the person was under 18, including for people who are now adults. It works with participating platforms and cannot guarantee that every copy everywhere will be removed. Use it alongside platform reporting and, where appropriate, evidence preservation and law-enforcement contact. NCMEC also provides information about online enticement and reporting.
