Short answer: no—not in the way the viral headline suggests. Microsoft’s Windows Recall is not a cloud service secretly intercepting every private message. On eligible Windows 11 Copilot+ PCs, Recall can periodically save screenshots of what is displayed on the screen, then make those snapshots searchable. Saving snapshots is currently documented as an opt-in feature and the snapshots and search index are designed to remain on the PC.
That still creates a legitimate privacy risk. If a private message appears in a recipient’s active window while Recall is enabled, the message may become part of a searchable local archive—even if it was sent through an end-to-end encrypted or disappearing-message service.
The headline is misleading, but the privacy concern is real
The claim that Microsoft is “secretly copying all your private messages” confuses two different things:

- Message interception: Microsoft or another party accessing messages while they travel through a messaging service or cloud server.
- Recipient-device capture: software saving content after it has been decrypted and displayed on someone’s computer.
Recall concerns the second category. Microsoft’s current documentation describes Recall as a Windows feature that stores snapshots locally, rather than a system that uploads everyone’s conversations to Microsoft’s servers. It is available only on compatible Copilot+ PCs, and saving snapshots is documented as off by default until the user opts in.

However, once a message is visible on a recipient’s screen, it can potentially be copied by screenshots, recording software, accessibility tools, malware—or Recall. End-to-end encryption protects a message in transit and within the messaging system’s intended boundaries. It cannot prevent the recipient’s device from copying the message after decryption.

What Windows Recall actually does
Recall periodically takes snapshots of the active screen, including when the content of the active window changes. It does not continuously record audio or save continuous video. Local optical character recognition and semantic search are used to help find information in the saved snapshots.
A snapshot could include:
- Text in messaging applications
- Photos and other images
- Websites and browser content
- Documents and presentations
- Account, financial, medical, or legal information visible on-screen
- Content displayed by encrypted or disappearing-message applications
Recall is not specifically targeting messaging apps. It captures screen content according to its settings and exclusions. A private message is exposed because it happens to be visible in the active window, just like a password, one-time code, confidential source code, intimate image, or medical record.
Capture is not guaranteed. It can depend on whether the content is visible, whether the app or website is excluded, whether private browsing is recognized, whether Recall is paused, and whether the PC has enough storage.

Can Recall capture an end-to-end encrypted or disappearing message?
Potentially, yes—if the message is displayed on-screen and the recipient has enabled snapshot saving.
Consider this sequence:
- A sender transmits an encrypted message.
- The recipient’s messaging app decrypts it on the recipient’s device.
- The app displays the message in an active window.
- Recall takes a snapshot of that screen.
- The message may then be searchable in Recall on that PC.
Recall has not therefore “broken” the message’s encryption. The encryption may have worked exactly as designed during transmission. The exposure occurs at the endpoint, after the message has been rendered for the recipient to read.
A disappearing-message timer also cannot guarantee that no copy exists. A recipient can take a screenshot, photograph the screen, record it with another device, or use software that captures the display. Recall is another possible local copy when it is enabled.

In 2025, reporting by Futurism, also carried in a Yahoo Tech report, described testing in which sensitive displayed content, including a private self-deleting message, was captured and indexed. Those reports concerned the version being tested at the time and should not automatically be treated as proof that every finding remains unchanged in the current preview.
Is Microsoft reading private messages in the cloud?
Microsoft’s current Recall documentation says no. It describes the snapshots and associated search index as being processed and stored locally on the Windows PC, not uploaded to Microsoft or shared with third parties through Recall.
That statement should not be stretched further than it goes. “Stored locally” does not mean “risk-free,” and it does not describe every other Windows, Microsoft 365, Copilot, diagnostic, backup, or third-party application data flow.
A local Recall archive could still be exposed through:
- Malware or spyware running on the PC
- An attacker who gains control of the Windows account
- An unlocked or shared computer
- A compromised authenticated session
- Forensic access to the device
- User error, such as exporting or sharing captured information
The accurate description is therefore: Recall can create a searchable local copy of content visible on an eligible PC. It is not accurate to describe it as Microsoft secretly collecting everyone’s private messages from the cloud.
Is Recall enabled automatically?
Microsoft’s current consumer guidance says saving snapshots is off by default and requires user opt-in. A user can enable it during setup or through:
Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots
From there, check the Save snapshots setting. If it is off, Recall should not save new snapshots.
The feature may still be present on an eligible PC even when saving is disabled. A system-tray Recall icon can indicate when snapshots are being saved or paused.
Commercial and education devices have additional restrictions. Microsoft says Recall is removed or disabled by default on managed devices unless an administrator permits it. Administrators can prevent Recall from being available or prevent snapshots from being saved, but Microsoft says an administrator cannot silently turn on snapshot saving for an end user; the end user must opt in.

Recall is not a feature on every Windows 11 computer. Microsoft associates it with compatible Copilot+ PCs and AI PCs meeting the required hardware and security standards.
Microsoft’s stated requirements include:
- Windows 11 on a compatible Copilot+ or AI PC meeting the Secured-core standard
- A neural processing unit capable of at least 40 TOPS
- At least 16 GB of RAM
- At least 256 GB of storage
- At least 50 GB of free storage to enable Recall
- Device Encryption or BitLocker
- Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security with at least one biometric sign-in method enabled
Microsoft says snapshot saving automatically pauses when available storage falls below 25 GB. Its developer documentation lists support for compatible Qualcomm, Intel, and AMD Copilot+ hardware, subject to the applicable Windows update and compatibility requirements.
The requirements can change with Windows updates. Readers should verify their specific model against Microsoft’s Recall developer documentation and current device documentation.
What protections does Recall provide?
According to Microsoft’s documented design:
- Snapshots and the search index are encrypted.
- Encryption keys are protected through the TPM and Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security.
- Windows Hello authentication is required before Recall launches and before stored snapshots can be accessed.
- Snapshots are processed locally.
- Snapshots are not shared between different Windows users on the same PC.
- Users can pause, delete, filter, or disable snapshot saving.
These protections are meaningful. Encryption makes it harder for someone who merely obtains the storage drive or browses ordinary files to read the archive. Authentication adds another barrier.
They are not an absolute guarantee. Malware operating inside an authenticated session, a stolen Windows account, a compromised device, or an attacker with sufficient control of the PC may still create serious exposure. “Encrypted” does not mean inaccessible to every attacker in every situation.
The initial Recall design drew substantial security criticism, including concerns about how a large history of screen activity could be accessed. Microsoft later withdrew the initial release and revised the feature. Historical testing from 2025 should be understood in that context rather than presented as proof that every current installation has the same architecture or vulnerability.
How reliable is sensitive-information filtering?
Recall includes sensitive-information filtering and allows users to exclude applications and websites. Those controls can reduce exposure, but Microsoft does not present automatic detection as an infallible guarantee.

- Inside an image or video
- In an unusual layout
- Inside an unsupported application
- On a page the detection system does not recognize correctly
- As a password, code, or private detail that lacks obvious labels
Do not rely on automatic filtering to protect passwords, recovery codes, health information, legal advice, intimate images, confidential business material, or trade secrets. Explicitly excluding an application or website is a stronger control than assuming an AI classifier will recognize every sensitive item.
Browser filtering has important limits
Microsoft documents filtering support for Edge, Firefox, Opera, Chrome, and Chromium-based browsers, but behavior varies.
- Edge, Firefox, Opera, and Chrome support filtering specified websites and private browsing activity.
- Other Chromium-based browsers version 124 or later may filter private browsing but may not support filtering specified websites.
- Website filtering applies to foreground browser tabs.
Filtering a website from Recall does not make the browsing session private. It does not stop the browser, website, internet service provider, employer, or another party from knowing that the site was accessed.

Check whether snapshots are being saved
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Open Recall & snapshots.
- Check Save snapshots.
- Turn it off if you do not want future snapshots saved.
Turning off snapshot saving prevents new snapshots from being saved. Review the deletion controls separately if you want to remove snapshots that already exist.

Open the Recall icon in the system tray and select the pause option. This can be useful before handling sensitive information, but turning off snapshot saving entirely is safer when you do not want the feature used at all.
Filter applications and websites
Go to Settings > Privacy & security > Recall & snapshots and add applications or websites to the filter list. Consider password managers, banking services, health and legal portals, private-messaging apps, confidential work tools, and other services that display information you would not want archived.
Filtering is defense in depth, not a guarantee that no sensitive content will ever be captured.
Delete existing snapshots
Use the deletion controls in Recall & snapshots or within Recall itself. Microsoft says previously saved snapshots are deleted when Recall is removed.

Turn Windows features on or off
Uncheck Recall and restart the PC.

Disable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName "Recall" -RemoveRestart Windows after running the command. Avoid registry hacks and unofficial debloating scripts as the default solution.
Enterprise controls
Organizations should not rely on each employee to discover and configure privacy settings manually. Microsoft documents policy controls that can:
- Remove Recall from managed devices
- Prevent users from enabling it
- Prevent snapshot saving
- Set storage limits
- Set retention limits
- Define application and website filters
The documented policy names include AllowRecallEnablement and DisableAIDataAnalysis. The relevant Group Policy path includes:

Organizations handling legal records, health information, financial data, trade secrets, source code, or journalistic material should decide whether local screen-history archives are compatible with their data-retention and endpoint-security requirements.
What this means for people sending sensitive messages
The sender cannot technically control every copy made on a recipient’s device. A privacy-focused messaging app can protect transmission while offering no guarantee against screenshots, cameras, malware, screen readers, or screen-history software on the recipient’s endpoint.
For particularly sensitive communications:
- Ask recipients not to use screen-history tools for the conversation.
- Use disappearing messages where appropriate, while recognizing that screenshots remain possible.
- Avoid sending information to devices or accounts you do not trust.
- Assume that anything displayed on a recipient’s screen may be copied.
- Organizations should use managed-device policies and clearly communicate endpoint requirements.
This is not a reason to abandon end-to-end encryption. It is a reminder that encryption protects a communication channel, not every endpoint that eventually displays the message.
Should you keep Recall enabled?
Keeping Recall enabled may make sense if you value a searchable history, personally control the PC, understand that visible content may be archived, and have configured strong Windows Hello, disk encryption, malware protection, and application or website exclusions.
Disabling or removing it is the safer choice if the computer is shared, often unattended, used in public, handles confidential work or sensitive personal information, or receives private messages from people who did not consent to local archival.
The central trade-off is convenience versus a new secondary record. Recall can help find something previously seen on-screen, but it can also preserve information after the original message disappears and create a valuable target for anyone who compromises the PC.
Verdict
The viral claim is not literally true as a description of Microsoft secretly collecting everyone’s private messages. Recall is a local Windows screen-history feature, and Microsoft’s current documentation says saving snapshots is opt-in, encrypted, and processed on the device.
But the warning is substantially true in a narrower sense: Recall can turn a private message displayed on a participating Windows PC into a searchable local archive without the sender knowing. It does not defeat end-to-end encryption; it demonstrates the unavoidable privacy limits of any message after it reaches the recipient’s device.
