Linux is better than Windows for some people, but Windows remains the safer default when compatibility matters most. Linux offers more control, strong development tools and a way to keep some older PCs useful. Windows 11 is usually the easier choice for commercial desktop software, games, specialist hardware and workplaces built around Microsoft.

The practical question is whether your specific apps, games and devices work on the system you want to use—and how much troubleshooting you are willing to do. You can also keep Windows and add Linux through WSL, a virtual machine or dual boot.

Linux vs. Windows at a glance

Area Linux Windows 11
Cost Most desktop distributions are free to download and use; paid support and some software are extra. Often included with a new PC; a separate license may cost extra.
Ease of use Many distributions are approachable, but hardware or software problems can take more research. Familiar to most PC users, with broad vendor and application support.
Software Excellent for development and open-source tools; some commercial apps are missing or unsupported. Strongest choice for mainstream commercial desktop apps and Windows-only utilities.
Gaming Many Steam games work through Proton, but compatibility is title-specific. Broadest game, anti-cheat, launcher and peripheral support.
Hardware Works well with many devices, but support varies by exact model and component. Manufacturers usually prioritize Windows drivers and utilities.
Control and customization More choice over desktop, software sources and system behavior. More centrally managed and integrated, with less freedom to change some defaults.
Privacy and security Offers substantial control, but security depends on updates, configuration and apps. Includes integrated security tools and connected Microsoft services; settings and account choices matter.

These are tendencies, not guarantees. “Linux” includes many distributions and desktop environments, and either system can be configured in ways that change the experience.

What does “Linux” mean?

Windows 11 is a commercial product family from Microsoft. Linux desktop systems are assembled as distributions, or “distros,” that combine the Linux kernel with software repositories, system tools and a desktop environment. Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Fedora, Debian, openSUSE and gaming-focused Bazzite are examples. Their defaults, release schedules, hardware support and interfaces differ.

The desktop matters too: GNOME, KDE Plasma, Cinnamon and Xfce each have different layouts and resource needs. A lightweight Xfce desktop may suit an older computer, while a modern desktop environment can require more memory and graphics capability. Do not assume that every Linux system is lightweight or that instructions for one distribution apply unchanged to another.

For a general-purpose trial, choose one maintained distribution with documentation and a desktop you like. Ubuntu Desktop describes its 26.04 release as free to download, use, modify and share, and lists common software such as browsers, Steam, OBS Studio and IDEs among supported desktop uses (Ubuntu Desktop documentation). The best choice still depends on your hardware and needs.

Where Linux is better

Development and technical work

Linux is a natural fit for programming and systems work. Shell tools, Git, SSH, compilers, languages, databases, containers and web servers are readily available, and Linux is widely used on servers. Developers can use a package manager to install and update many tools from distribution repositories rather than hunting for separate installers.

That does not mean Windows is a poor development platform. Windows plus the Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) gives developers Linux command-line tools and environments while retaining Windows applications. Microsoft documents support for Linux distributions, common utilities, programming languages, services and graphical Linux applications in WSL (Microsoft’s WSL overview).

Control, customization and open-source software

Linux gives users more choice over the desktop, software sources, background services and system configuration. Many components are open source, which allows inspection and modification, though it does not mean every component is continuously audited or easy to change. Distributions typically provide curated software repositories and update tools; other formats and sources, such as Flatpak or third-party repositories, may also be available.

Older computers

Linux can be a practical way to keep a usable PC running if it cannot officially move to Windows 11. Windows 11 lists requirements including a compatible 64-bit processor, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage, UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability, TPM 2.0 and DirectX 12-compatible graphics with WDDM 2.0. Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; check its Windows 11 specifications and compatibility guidance for current details and the PC Health Check tool.

A lighter Linux desktop may run acceptably on hardware that feels constrained under a newer Windows installation, but results depend on the machine and chosen distribution. Check whether the browser, video-call software and other apps you need still support the system you plan to install.

Where Windows is better

Commercial software and work requirements

Windows is the safer primary system if your work depends on Microsoft 365 desktop apps, Adobe Creative Cloud, specialist accounting or engineering software, CAD, medical or educational tools, Windows-only plugins, or hardware-control utilities. Some vendors provide web apps or Linux alternatives, but those may not preserve every feature, workflow or support commitment.

Using Microsoft 365 in a browser on Linux is not the same as running the full Windows desktop applications. Complex Excel workbooks, VBA macros, add-ins, Outlook integrations, enterprise management features and formatting fidelity can matter. Adobe’s Creative Cloud desktop-app information does not make Linux a normal, officially supported desktop platform for the suite.

Before switching, verify the exact application and version you rely on, including plugins, file formats, licensing, hardware acceleration and vendor support. A program that launches through Wine or another compatibility layer may still fail after an update or lack a feature you need.

Games, peripherals and vendor support

Windows remains the most compatible choice for PC games, especially new releases, competitive multiplayer, kernel-level anti-cheat, proprietary launchers, VR, mod managers and vendor overlays. The same compatibility advantage applies to unusual peripherals, fingerprint readers, printers, scanners, docks, firmware tools and manufacturer utilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Manufacturers commonly publish drivers and support instructions for Windows first. Linux supports many common devices out of the box, but a laptop’s Wi-Fi chipset, suspend behavior, hybrid graphics, function keys or fingerprint reader can be the deciding detail. Check the exact computer and device model, not just the brand.

Is Linux good enough for gaming?

For many Steam games, yes. Valve’s Proton compatibility layer lets many Windows games run on Linux, and Steam Deck development has helped make Linux gaming more practical. Some games also have native Linux versions. But Proton is not a promise that every game works: anti-cheat, launchers, DRM, mods, VR and updates can change the result.

Windows remains the better default if you expect every major PC game to work without research. Linux may be an excellent fit if your library is mostly single-player Steam titles or games with strong current compatibility reports. Before switching, check each must-play game’s reports on ProtonDB, the game’s anti-cheat and launcher requirements, multiplayer status, mods, controller support and performance on your specific GPU.

Steam’s July 2026 Hardware & Software Survey recorded Windows at 93.67% and Linux at 4.01% among participating Steam users. The survey is optional and anonymous, so it is a snapshot of Steam respondents—not a census of all PC owners or a direct measure of which games work (Steam Hardware & Software Survey).

Is Linux faster than Windows?

There is no universal performance winner. Linux may feel more responsive on an older PC when paired with a lighter desktop, but a particular game or application may run better on Windows because its vendor targets Windows directly. GPU drivers, power management, desktop environment, background services, game API, storage and application versions all affect results.

Also distinguish idle memory use from what matters to you: game frame rates and frame-time consistency, battery life, application launch time, suspend reliability and the amount of work completed. A system that uses less RAM while idle is not automatically the faster or more productive choice. Compare the workload you actually run, and include time spent troubleshooting.

Privacy, security and updates

Linux generally gives users more control over system components and software sources, and many distributions rely on repositories that reduce the need to download random installers. Some users also prefer its reduced dependence on a single vendor’s account and cloud ecosystem. But Linux is not automatically private or secure: distributions and applications differ, malware and supply-chain risks exist, and an unpatched or poorly configured system can be vulnerable.

Windows includes substantial security features, including Defender and protections involving Secure Boot, TPM and signed drivers. Microsoft describes Secure Boot as helping ensure that the PC starts with trusted software. Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro for personal use require internet access and a Microsoft account during initial setup according to Microsoft’s current specifications; organizational deployments and other circumstances can differ. Windows also integrates connected services and diagnostic data, so review settings and account choices if those are concerns.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Privacy depends on the whole setup: operating system, browser, apps, cloud storage, accounts, extensions and behavior. Linux does not erase telemetry from a browser or cloud service you continue to use, and Windows is not automatically insecure simply because it is proprietary.

Both systems need regular security updates. Windows centralizes updates, which can make patching straightforward, though updates may require restarts or change features. Linux updates typically come through distribution repositories; long-term-support releases favor stability, while rolling releases deliver newer software and may require more care. More control over update timing is not the same as not needing updates.

Which should you choose?

  • Choose Windows 11 if you depend on Microsoft 365 desktop features, Adobe Creative Cloud, specialist business software, competitive games, unusual peripherals or an employer’s Windows management and support.
  • Choose Linux if your workflow is browser-based, development-focused or built around open-source apps, and you value control, customization or keeping an older PC useful.
  • Try Linux first, but keep Windows available if you mostly play Steam games, need one uncertain app, or are still learning how the system fits your workflow.
  • Consider Windows plus WSL if you want Linux development tools without giving up Windows applications and games.
  • Stay with the system your organization supports if school, work, accessibility tools, VPN, smart-card authentication or security policy depends on a managed platform.

Linux’s lack of an operating-system license fee does not make every Linux setup cost-free. Commercial support, proprietary apps, cloud services and troubleshooting can all add cost. Canonical offers paid Ubuntu Pro security and support services; these are options for users and organizations that need them, not a requirement for an ordinary desktop installation. Conversely, Windows may be included with a PC, while a standalone license or a hardware replacement can affect its total cost.

A useful comparison is total friction: which system lets you do your work, play your games and maintain your computer with the least combined cost, setup and disruption?

How to test Linux without committing

  1. List your non-negotiables. Include applications, games, plugins, file formats, VPNs, accessibility software, printers, scanners, webcam and work or school policies.
  2. Back up important files. Keep a separate copy before changing partitions or installing an operating system.
  3. Choose a distribution and make a bootable USB. Follow that distribution’s official instructions.
  4. Boot the live environment. Ubuntu documents trying its desktop from USB without making permanent changes (Ubuntu Desktop documentation).
  5. Test your actual hardware. Check Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, audio, display scaling, webcam, touchpad, suspend and resume, external monitors, dock, printer and any essential special keys.
  6. Verify the applications and games. Test real files, macros, plugins, launchers and multiplayer—not just whether an icon appears.
  7. Pick a reversible path if uncertain. WSL or a virtual machine suits occasional Linux use; dual boot suits regular use of both systems but requires care with partitions, encryption and boot configuration. Installing Linux on a second drive can reduce the need to repartition the Windows drive.

Do not erase Windows until you know how you will handle any application that does not work. Options include dual boot, a Windows virtual machine, remote Windows access or keeping a separate Windows computer; each has trade-offs in rebooting, graphics performance, hardware access, latency, security and cost.
