Yes—on Windows, you can install CurseForge without Overwolf. CurseForge provides an official Download standalone option on its official app download page. The standalone client is intended to be lighter and does not install the Overwolf platform, but it supports fewer games and does not provide Overwolf-specific in-game features.
What “standalone CurseForge” means
CurseForge has two Windows distributions: an Overwolf version and an official standalone version. The standalone app is published directly by CurseForge, so it is not an unofficial workaround, modified installer, or third-party hack.
CurseForge describes standalone as its lightweight client, while the Overwolf version includes additional in-game features. “Lightweight” is product positioning, however; the official information does not establish specific RAM, CPU, startup-time, or performance differences.
How to install CurseForge without Overwolf on Windows
- Open the official CurseForge download page.
- Under the Windows options, select Download standalone.
- Do not select Download on Overwolf.
- Run the downloaded installer and follow the setup prompts.
- Open CurseForge and let it scan for installed games, or add a game manually.
- Choose a supported game, create a profile, and install a mod or modpack from the app’s Browse or Discover area.
Labels and menu placement can change between app versions, so use the download option names rather than relying on an old screenshot.

If CurseForge does not detect your game
In the app, open Settings, click the + button, and choose either Scan computer for games or Manually add a game. For manual setup, select the game’s main installation folder.
Manual detection will not fix every compatibility problem. CurseForge says Microsoft Store game versions are not supported because their file structures differ. The Xbox Game Pass version of Palworld is also specifically excluded from standalone support.

The standalone client is not a universal replacement. The two versions have different Windows game-support lists, and content being available on the CurseForge website does not guarantee that it can be managed through the standalone app.

Which Windows games work with standalone CurseForge?
CurseForge’s current support documentation lists these games for the Windows standalone client:
- Minecraft: Java Edition
- Palworld, excluding the Xbox Game Pass version
- Stardew Valley
- The Sims 4
- World of Warcraft
CurseForge may add or change supported games, so check the official support list before installing. The Overwolf version supports a broader selection, including games such as Hytale, Minecraft Dungeons, Rift, Runes of Magic, The Elder Scrolls Online, and World of Tanks.

Using standalone CurseForge for Minecraft
Yes, standalone CurseForge works with Minecraft: Java Edition. The app can create and manage profiles, mods, modpacks, and supported modloaders, including:
- Forge
- Fabric
- NeoForge
- Quilt
- Vanilla
By default, CurseForge stores Minecraft data in these locations:
Windows: C:Users[user]curseforgeminecraft
macOS: /Users/[user]/Documents/curseforge/minecraft/
Linux: /home/[user]/Documents/curseforge/minecraftThese are default locations, not mandatory paths. The app can use different directories depending on your setup.
CurseForge is not a replacement for owning Minecraft. You still need a legitimate Minecraft account and compatible game access. Modpacks can normally launch through the Classic/Mojang launcher. CurseForge also documents options for the Microsoft Store launcher or the CurseForge launcher in Minecraft settings. Skipping the standard launcher requires signing in with a Microsoft/Minecraft account.
Some CurseForge features require an account, including subscription benefits and World of Warcraft profile synchronization. Basic use may not require signing in in every situation, but anonymous access should not be assumed for every feature.

What about macOS and Linux?
The Windows standalone-versus-Overwolf choice should not be applied automatically to other platforms.

- macOS: CurseForge documents native support for macOS 11 and later rather than presenting the same two Windows installer choices.
- Linux: CurseForge provides native AppImage and Debian
.debpackages, with official support focused on Ubuntu distributions.
Linux users installing the AppImage may need AppImageLauncher for CurseForge website links to open the desktop app correctly.
Switching from Overwolf to standalone
There is no need to assume that an existing Overwolf installation will convert automatically into standalone. The safer approach is to install the official standalone client separately, verify that it works, and remove Overwolf only afterward.
- Back up important modpack profiles and custom files.
- Install standalone from the official CurseForge download page.
- Scan for your games or add them manually.
- Check that profiles, mods, and custom configurations appear correctly.
- Launch a profile and confirm that it works.
- Only then uninstall the old CurseForge and Overwolf components if you no longer need them.
Back up your config folders, shader packs, resource packs, screenshots, custom scripts, worlds, and manually added mods. Moving between clients can result in different profile directories or settings.
Will uninstalling Overwolf delete your mods?
CurseForge says uninstalling its app does not remove installed mods or content. That does not mean every file associated with Overwolf is preserved. Overwolf’s own uninstall documentation warns that its app data, settings, and recordings may be removed.

Therefore, treat installed game content and Overwolf data as separate categories. Back up custom profiles and user-created files before uninstalling anything.

You selected the wrong Windows download
If Overwolf appears in Windows’ installed apps or is running alongside CurseForge, you may have selected Download on Overwolf. Check Windows’ installed-apps list for both CurseForge and Overwolf. Install the standalone version separately, confirm it works, and then uninstall the unwanted installation.
Your game is missing from standalone
First use Settings → + → Scan computer for games. If that fails, use Manually add a game and select the main game folder. If the game is a Microsoft Store edition, or is not on the standalone support list, manual scanning may not help.
A website install link does not open the app
This is particularly relevant to Linux AppImage installations. Install AppImageLauncher if required, then retry the browser-to-app link.

Look for the previous profile directory and copy or import the needed content only after making a backup. Preserve configuration files, saves, screenshots, and custom additions rather than assuming the new client will discover every old profile automatically.

Does standalone CurseForge remove all advertising?
Do not assume so. CurseForge’s official Premium page markets ad-free access across the website and desktop client as a Premium benefit. The standalone installer should not be described as a guaranteed ad-free edition.
Premium is optional and does not replace the decision about whether to install Overwolf. Subscription pricing and benefits can change, so check the official page for current terms.
Alternatives if standalone is not suitable
Modrinth App
The Modrinth App is an open-source desktop app with Windows, macOS, and Linux downloads. It is a good choice for Minecraft players whose preferred mods and modpacks are available on Modrinth, but it is not a complete substitute for CurseForge’s catalog.
Prism Launcher
Prism Launcher is suited to Minecraft users who want detailed instance management. Its official documentation explains how to download content from both Modrinth and CurseForge services. It offers more configuration flexibility, but may be less guided for beginners and does not provide non-Minecraft CurseForge game support.
