Yes, but only as a targeted, temporary fix. Uninstall a Windows update when a clearly identifiable recent update causes a serious, repeatable problem such as crashes, boot failure, or broken hardware. Do not remove updates routinely or simply because you dislike a change: removing a security update also removes protections against the vulnerabilities it fixed.

Microsoft documents update removal for troubleshooting, while warning that some updates cannot be removed and that users should understand the risks before removing a security update. See the official uninstall guidance.

What “uninstalling an update” actually does

The correct recovery action depends on what changed:

Update type What removal means
Quality update Removes the latest removable cumulative/monthly update. Because quality updates are cumulative, one removal can remove several fixes.
Feature update Rolls Windows back to the previous operating-system version, if rollback files remain. This is different from removing a monthly KB.
Driver update Often best handled in Device Manager with the device’s Roll Back Driver option rather than removing the entire Windows update.
Microsoft Store or app update Uses that app’s own repair, reset, or rollback controls—not Windows Update removal.
Reset or reinstall Windows A much broader recovery operation, not an equivalent to removing one update.

Quality updates generally contain recurring security and reliability fixes; feature updates are larger version upgrades. Microsoft explains the distinction in its Windows Update FAQ and Windows lifecycle FAQ.

When uninstalling is justified

Removal is reasonable when all of these are substantially true:

  • A serious problem began soon after a particular update installed.
  • The update’s KB number and installation date match the change.
  • The symptom is repeatable, or disappears in Safe Mode or a clean boot.
  • The impact justifies temporarily losing the update’s fixes.
  • No newer corrected update or safer workaround solves it.

Examples include blue screens, repeated restarts, a failed boot, a broken Wi-Fi adapter, printer, graphics device, VPN or storage controller, or a business application that became unusable. Timing alone does not prove causation: failing hardware, third-party security software, drivers, disk errors and corrupted system files can change at the same time.

When you should keep the update

  • There is no actual malfunction.
  • You only dislike a visual or interface change, a restart, or disk usage.
  • You cannot accept exposure to the vulnerability the update fixes.
  • The computer is managed by an employer, school, domain, endpoint-management system or compliance policy. Ask the administrator first.

Removing a security update can expose the machine to actively exploited flaws, reliability fixes and compatibility improvements. Treat removal as a short bridge to a workaround or replacement, not a permanent configuration.

Prepare before removing anything

  1. Back up important files. Microsoft recommends backups before recovery operations; see Recovery options in Windows.
  2. Record the KB number, installation date, Windows edition/build, and the exact symptom.
  3. Create a restore point if System Protection is enabled.
  4. Save work, connect a laptop to power, and locate the BitLocker recovery key before entering recovery tools.
  5. Check for a newer update, application release, or device-driver fix.
  6. Try a restart, affected-driver or app update, removal of recently added hardware, and Windows Update troubleshooting.

For system corruption, an elevated Command Prompt can run the Microsoft-documented checks:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
sfc /scannow
chkdsk /f C:

These may require administrator approval and a restart. Guidance is in Microsoft’s update troubleshooting article.

Uninstall a quality update in Windows 11

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update, then Update history.
  3. Under Related settings, select Uninstall updates.
  4. Match the KB number and date to your notes; do not choose the first entry blindly.
  5. Select the update, choose Uninstall, follow the prompts, and restart.

Labels can vary by build, language, edition and administrator policy. The current Microsoft path is documented here.

Uninstall a quality update in Windows 10

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security > Windows Update.
  3. Choose View update history > Uninstall updates.
  4. Select the verified update, choose Uninstall, and restart if asked.

Ordinary Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, removing an update does not return a standard Windows 10 installation to a fully supported security state; long-term-servicing and eligible extended-security arrangements are different. See Microsoft’s install-updates page and lifecycle FAQ.

If Windows will not start: use Windows Recovery Environment

  1. Enter WinRE by holding Shift while selecting Restart, allowing Automatic Repair after interrupted starts, or booting Windows installation/recovery media.
  2. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates.
  3. Choose Uninstall latest quality update for a monthly update, or Uninstall latest feature update for a version upgrade.
  4. Follow the prompts and restart.

WinRE may request the BitLocker recovery key. The option can be unavailable when the package is non-removable or rollback data is gone. Removing the latest cumulative update may not remove an older problem if a newer package superseded it. If it fails, try System Restore, Startup Repair, Windows recovery media, or the appropriate reinstall option described in Microsoft’s recovery guidance.

Rolling back a feature update

The normal feature-update rollback period is 10 days, provided the previous-installation files (commonly Windows.old) remain. Administrators can configure the window from 2 to 60 days; values outside that range revert to the 10-day default.

DISM /Online /Get-OSUninstallWindow
DISM /Online /Initiate-OSUninstall
DISM /Online /Set-OSUninstallWindow /Value:30

These commands roll back a previous Windows installation; they do not remove an ordinary monthly KB. Details are in Microsoft’s DISM uninstall documentation.

Advanced command-line removal

Use an elevated terminal only when you understand the package involved.

DISM /Online /Get-Packages
DISM /Online /Remove-Package /PackageName:<package-name>
wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:<KB-number>

DISM requires the exact package name; an .msu file cannot simply be supplied to /Remove-Package. WUSA supports only packages that permit that operation—for example, wusa.exe /uninstall /kb:5101650 is a format, not a guarantee. Microsoft has documented combined servicing-stack/cumulative packages for which WUSA uninstall does not work. Consult the DISM package documentation, WUSA switches and the KB5087420 notes. Do not guess package names.

Why the uninstall option may be missing

  • The package is marked non-removable, such as some servicing-stack or WinRE updates.
  • It has been superseded and its uninstall files were cleaned up.
  • Component cleanup or image integration removed the older package version.
  • The feature rollback window expired, or an enablement package/managed configuration is in use.

For example, Microsoft says the June 2026 WinRE update KB5098815 cannot be removed once applied to a Windows image. Also, using DISM with /ResetBase removes the ability to uninstall existing packages; Microsoft documents that warning in its WinSxS cleanup guidance.

After the uninstall

  1. Restart and reproduce the original failure.
  2. Record whether it disappeared; success suggests the change mattered, but does not prove root cause.
  3. Check Microsoft release-health and the update’s support page for a corrected release.
  4. Install the replacement or newer cumulative update as soon as it is available.
  5. If the symptom remains, reinstall the update and investigate drivers, applications, hardware, storage and system corruption.

Windows may offer or reinstall a removed update if it remains applicable. Pausing updates buys time but is temporary: Microsoft allows up to 35 days, after which Windows checks for applicable updates again. See Pause updates in Windows. Managed devices can use approved Windows Update policies or Intune; see Windows Update client policies.

Practical decision guide

Situation Best next step
Minor cosmetic change Keep the update and adjust supported settings.
No problem exists Keep it.
Severe, immediate failure after a removable update Back up, verify the KB, uninstall and test.
Security update conflicts with a critical app Prefer a vendor fix, workaround or containment before removal.
PC will not boot Use WinRE’s latest-quality-update rollback.
Major version upgrade is incompatible Use feature rollback while files remain.
Managed business device Contact IT before changing servicing state.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will uninstalling an update delete my personal files?

Removing one quality update is intended to change system components, not personal documents. Back up first because broader recovery actions such as Reset or reinstalling Windows can have different data-loss consequences.

Can Windows reinstall an update I removed?

Yes. If it remains applicable, Windows Update may offer or install it again. A pause of up to 35 days is temporary, not a permanent block.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is it safe to uninstall a security update?

It can be justified to restore a severely broken system, but the machine loses that update’s protection. Reinstall a corrected or replacement update promptly.

Should I remove a driver update or the whole Windows update?

If Device Manager offers Roll Back Driver for the affected device, that narrower action is usually preferable to removing an entire cumulative update.

What if the uninstall button is missing?

The package may be non-removable, superseded, integrated into the image, cleaned up, or outside the feature rollback window. Use the documented recovery alternatives rather than forcing an unknown package removal.
