Yes—Google Photos analyzes photos you upload. Automated processing powers search, face grouping, suggested edits and other features. Gemini features such as Ask Photos add another layer of analysis. That does not mean Google employees routinely browse everyone’s libraries: Google describes limited human review in certain situations involving Ask Photos, feedback, or abuse and harm.
You can stop new uploads, switch off particular analysis features, or delete existing cloud copies. These are separate actions: turning off Backup does not remove photos already stored in your Google Account.
What “peeking” means in Google Photos
Several different things can happen when you use Google Photos. Keeping them separate makes it easier to choose the right privacy control.

Cloud copies and local photos are different
A photo kept only in a phone’s local gallery is not uploaded to Google Photos just because the app is installed. If Backup is enabled, photos on that device can be saved to the Google Account. Google says backed-up items are accessible on signed-in devices. Check Backup on every device that might upload; switching it off on one phone does not necessarily stop uploads from another. Ordinary photo analysis
Google Photos can use automated recognition to help users find people, places and things, and to make features such as automatic creations, memories and suggested edits work. For Face Groups, Google says it detects faces, creates numerical face models, estimates whether images show the same person, and groups likely matches. What Gemini adds
Google says Gemini features in Photos may use photos and videos in the library, face-group names and labels, Google Account information, user-provided relationship information, and saved facts in the Photos “Remember List.” The notice also describes inferred information, such as estimated age and locations of top face groups, and information about photos, albums and face groups studied to answer Ask Photos queries. Ask Photos is experimental and may give inaccurate or inappropriate results. Availability depends on factors including region, language, age, account eligibility and rollout; some features may require Face Groups and location estimates. What Google says about ads, AI training and human review
Google says personal data in Google Photos is not used for advertising. It also says it does not train generative AI models outside Google Photos with personal data stored in Photos. These statements do not mean that no analysis happens: automated processing still supports Photos features. They also do not cover a photo you deliberately share with Gemini Apps or another third-party service, which is subject to that service’s own privacy terms. Google does not describe routine employee browsing of users’ entire libraries. Its Gemini privacy information does describe limited human review possibilities connected to Ask Photos, such as when a user submits feedback or in rare situations involving abuse or harm. If you use Ask Photos but do not want queries available for improvement review, switch off the query-access setting below.
Quick privacy audit: choose the controls you need
- Stop future uploads: turn off Backup on every phone or tablet that could send photos to your account.
- Remove face analysis: turn off Face Groups if you do not want Google Photos creating or retaining those face groups and models.
- Disable Gemini in Photos: switch off “Use Gemini in Photos,” or turn off Ask Photos specifically if that is the control shown.
- Stop query review: if you keep using Ask Photos, turn off “Allow us to access your queries” under “Help us improve Photos.”
- Remove existing cloud copies, if wanted: first protect the copies you need, disable Backup, then delete the selected items at photos.google.com.
Steps 1–4 affect uploads or features; they do not erase your existing Photos library. Deletion is a separate step.
How to switch off the main controls
Google changes labels and menus across operating systems, account types and app rollouts. These are Google’s documented paths; if a label differs, look in Photos settings for the named feature.

Turn off Backup on Android
- Open Google Photos.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Photos settings, then Backup.
- Turn Backup off.
Turn off Backup on iPhone or iPad
In Google Photos, tap your profile picture or initial and open Photos settings. Find the Backup control and switch it off. The exact label or placement may vary by iOS app version.

- Android: Open Google Photos, tap your profile picture or initial, then tap Google Photos settings.
- Tap Privacy or, on some versions, Preferences, then Group similar faces.
- Turn Face Groups off.
On a computer, go to photos.google.com/settings, find Group similar faces, and turn it off. Google says this deletes Face Groups, the face models used to create them, and user-created face labels. It does not delete the underlying photos or videos; removing a photo from a group also leaves the photo in the library. Google Photos Help: Face Groups and your data
Turn off Gemini features or Ask Photos
- Open Google Photos and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Photos settings or Google Photos settings, then Preferences.
- Tap Gemini features in Photos.
- Turn off Use Gemini in Photos to disable Gemini-powered Photos features, or turn off Ask Photos or Search with Ask Photos if that is the displayed control.

Turn off Ask Photos query access
- Open Photos settings → Preferences → Gemini features in Photos.
- Open Help us improve Photos.
- Turn off Allow us to access your queries.
This setting concerns access to Ask Photos queries for improvement review. It is not a control for deleting the photo library. Google Photos Help: Gemini features in Photos

Take care here: a photo visible in the app may be a local copy, and deleting from a synced service can have consequences for copies you intended to keep. Verify your files before deleting anything.
- Download or export the originals you want to keep. Open a sample of the exported files and check that the dates, albums or other information important to you have been preserved.
- Turn off Backup on every phone, tablet or computer that could upload the files again.
- Check for additional backed-up folders and other devices signed in to the account.
- In a browser, open photos.google.com and delete the cloud photos and videos you have chosen to remove.
- Check that the files remain in your intended local or alternative backup location. Keep Backup off if you do not want them uploaded again.
Google documents disabling Backup before deleting backed-up items when you want local copies to remain. Do not assume switching off Backup deletes cloud data, or that deleting an item instantly removes every copy from every system. Google Photos Help: back up photos and videos

Remove Gemini-related saved information
If you have used Gemini features in Photos, review Ask Photos activity and any “Remember List” facts you saved. Google says Ask Photos activity can be turned off through Gemini features settings and that past activity may need to be deleted separately. Also consider removing face-group names or relationship details and reviewing feedback you submitted: an optional screenshot sent with feedback could show photos. Choose a setup based on your privacy goal
Keep Google Photos, but reduce personalization
- Keep Backup on if you rely on Google’s cloud copy and cross-device access.
- Turn off Face Groups and Gemini features in Photos; avoid adding face labels or relationship information.
- If you continue to use Ask Photos, turn off query access for improvement review.
- Review location information and metadata before sharing sensitive images.
You give up or reduce features that rely on face grouping or Gemini, while retaining cloud storage and other Photos functions. Location controls are separate from Backup.
Keep photos on your phone, not in Google Photos cloud storage
- Export and verify anything you want to keep before removing cloud copies.
- Turn off Backup on all possible upload devices, then delete the cloud copies.
- Keep at least one additional copy on an external drive or another backup service.
This removes automatic cross-device access and Google Photos cloud recovery for deleted items. A single external drive is not a complete backup strategy; a second independent copy helps protect against drive failure or loss.

Move to another provider or a local library
Make the switch in stages: inventory the library, export originals and metadata where possible, test-import a representative sample, and check dates, albums, motion photos, edited copies, shared albums and face organization. Keep two independent copies before deleting Google’s cloud library, and disable every backup source that could upload the photos again.
Alternatives involve different trade-offs, not a guarantee of zero processing. Proton Drive markets encrypted cloud storage and photo backup for people seeking a privacy-focused hosted alternative, though its Photos organization and ecosystem integration may differ. iCloud+ may fit Apple-device households, but moving providers is not the same as local-only storage or end-to-end encryption in every workflow. A local or external-drive library reduces routine cloud exposure but requires you to maintain reliable backups. Common cases that can complicate a cleanup
- More than one device: Check each device’s Backup setting; one still-enabled device can upload photos.
- Shared albums or partner sharing: Another account may still have access through sharing even if you delete an item from your own library.
- Face Groups unavailable: Face Groups is not available for every region, domain or account type.
- Gemini controls missing: Gemini and Ask Photos eligibility depends on region, language, age, account type and rollout.
- Work or school account: Administrator and storage controls may differ from a personal account.
- Local copy after cloud deletion: An item still visible in the app does not by itself prove it remains backed up online.
- Third-party sharing: If you send a photo to Gemini Apps or another service, that service’s own privacy terms apply.
