No—not according to Google’s current documentation. As of September 27, 2026, Google’s Chromebook Help page still lists “Cameras aren’t yet supported” under the Linux development environment’s unsupported features. Google documents Linux microphone access, limited USB sharing and ChromeOS camera permissions separately, but none of those documents announces Linux webcam support or a release date.
What Google officially supports today
Google’s Set up Linux on your Chromebook guidance explicitly places the sentence “Cameras aren’t yet supported” in its list of limitations. That applies to Linux on ChromeOS, also known as Crostini: the environment used to run command-line and graphical Linux applications alongside ChromeOS.
This is a current support statement, not a forecast that camera support is about to arrive. The documentation does not provide a camera-specific preview, experimental switch or rollout schedule.

Why microphone access does not mean camera access
Linux microphone capture is a separate capability. Google’s setup instructions include a setting that lets Linux use the Chromebook’s microphone, and the Crostini FAQ says audio capture was supported in the ChromeOS M84 release. That historical statement concerns microphone input only; it does not extend to video cameras.

| Hardware or permission | Documented Linux-on-ChromeOS status | What the evidence means |
|---|---|---|
| Microphone | Supported with an explicit Linux setting | Google’s FAQ dates audio-capture support to ChromeOS M84. |
| Camera | Not supported | Google’s setup page says, “Cameras aren’t yet supported.” |
| USB devices | Case-by-case sharing | USB sharing is not documented as a webcam or camera-passthrough path. |
Can USB sharing or an external webcam work around the limit?
Google says some USB devices can be shared with Linux on a case-by-case basis. Neither the Crostini FAQ nor the Linux setup page identifies webcams as a supported device category for camera access. Selecting a USB device in ChromeOS therefore does not establish that a Linux application will receive a usable camera stream.
Buying a UVC webcam, a USB-C adapter or a different cable is not a documented fix for Crostini camera access. Google’s webcam compatibility specification describes external webcams for ChromeOS use—such as video conferencing and the ChromeOS Camera app—and says compatible models should support USB 2.0 or later and UVC 1.0 or later. Those requirements address host-side compatibility, not passthrough into the Linux environment.

What ChromeOS camera privacy controls actually do
ChromeOS has device-wide and per-application camera controls. Turning off global camera access blocks camera use at all levels and services. The permission pages also cover Chrome and web apps and Android applications.
Recommended Free Tools
Those controls govern ChromeOS-hosted software. They do not install a Linux camera driver or create a camera device inside Crostini. A camera can work in Chrome or an Android app while remaining unavailable to a Linux application, and that combination is consistent with Google’s documented support boundaries.

What to check when a camera works in ChromeOS but not Linux
- Identify the application environment. Confirm whether the video app is a Chrome/web app, Android app or Linux application. Only the first two use the ChromeOS permission paths described by Google.
- Check the host privacy setting. In ChromeOS camera privacy controls, make sure global camera access is enabled and that the relevant Chrome or Android app has permission.
- Do not treat USB selection as camera support. USB sharing may expose some peripherals, but Google does not document it as webcam passthrough for Linux.
- Do not expect Linux troubleshooting to add the feature. Restarting the container, updating packages or changing Linux application settings can fix ordinary software problems, but Google’s generic troubleshooting guidance does not say those actions enable cameras.
Is there a public release date?
No public camera-support date is documented in Google’s official materials. Google’s Crostini FAQ says, “We are not currently publishing any information beyond this document,” in its discussion of device support and says it has no device-support roadmaps to share. That is general roadmap context, not an announcement of a forthcoming camera feature.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What this means for choosing a workaround
- Need video calls in ChromeOS? Use a built-in or compatible external webcam with ChromeOS-supported apps and check the host privacy permissions.
- Need a Linux application to capture video? There is no documented Crostini camera path to enable today. Consider running that application in a ChromeOS or Android environment when an equivalent exists, or use a separate Linux computer where the webcam is directly attached.
- Considering new hardware? A webcam or adapter may improve native ChromeOS use, but official documentation does not establish any accessory as a way to expose a camera to Crostini.
Bottom line
Google has not, in its current public documentation, brought camera access to Linux on ChromeOS. Microphone support, host privacy switches and case-by-case USB sharing are distinct features. Until Google changes the Linux support list or publishes a camera-specific announcement, a Linux app that cannot see the Chromebook’s camera is behaving as the platform documentation predicts.
