Yes—if you download it from CurseForge’s official site, the standalone app is a legitimate application and is generally safe to install. But that does not guarantee that every mod you download through it is harmless. CurseForge suffered a real Minecraft malware incident in 2023, and any platform distributing user-created software carries some residual risk.
What “standalone” means
On Windows, CurseForge offers a standalone app as a separate option from the version that runs through the Overwolf client. Choosing standalone is intended to let you use CurseForge without installing the Overwolf client. It does not make the app unrelated to Overwolf: CurseForge is part of the Overwolf ecosystem, and the standalone app still connects to online services.

Standalone also does not mean offline, ad-free, or independently security-audited. Nor does it mean every game listed on the CurseForge website is supported by the desktop app. Check the current supported-platform and game information before installing. As of the support information updated January 27, 2026, Windows standalone support includes Minecraft: Java Edition, Palworld (not the Xbox Game Pass version), Stardew Valley, The Sims 4, and World of Warcraft; availability can change.
Is the app itself malware?
The evidence in CurseForge’s official materials supports a qualified no: the standalone app is an official download option, not an unofficial repack. The CurseForge download page presents separate app choices, and the official Overwolf listing identifies CurseForge as its app. That establishes legitimate distribution, not proof from an independent audit that the software is risk-free.

Malware, privacy, and advertising are different questions. A legitimate app may include ads, account features, or data collection without being a virus. Conversely, a trusted launcher cannot make every file it distributes safe.
What happened in the 2023 malware incident?
In 2023, attackers uploaded infected Minecraft files to CurseForge. The company reported that the malware was designed to evade commercial antivirus tools and estimated that the infected files were downloaded about 6,500 times before removal. CurseForge described a response involving automated checks, manual moderation, and additional review by security experts for suspicious files. Its incident report says the files were removed and the app and website were safe to use after its response.

That last assessment is CurseForge’s own statement, not an independent guarantee of future safety. The incident does not mean every current CurseForge download is dangerous; it does show that malicious content can get through a moderated repository and evade detection. The practical lesson is to treat the app and each mod as separate trust decisions.
Can a mod downloaded through CurseForge be dangerous?
Yes. Mods are third-party software, and depending on the game and file type, they may include code or scripts that affect the game or system. CurseForge says it uses automated antivirus, file-structure, and compliance checks, followed by manual moderation and extra security-expert testing when something looks suspicious. Those are useful safeguards, not a promise that every file is harmless. A clean scan also does not establish that a mod is trustworthy, compatible, or respectful of your privacy. - Check the author and project’s history. A known maintainer and an established record can reduce uncertainty, but popularity is not proof of safety.
- Read recent comments, issue reports, release notes, and the file’s date.
- Confirm the game version and mod loader match your installation. CurseForge’s Minecraft guide lists Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt, and Vanilla support.
- Be cautious if a mod asks you to run a separate executable or script, redirects you to an unfamiliar installer, or includes unexpected files.
- Take unexplained credential prompts, browser changes, unusual network activity, or antivirus alerts seriously.
Is standalone safer than the Overwolf version?

Standalone is a reasonable choice if you want CurseForge’s catalog and convenience but do not want the Overwolf client installed on Windows. It is not inherently safer against malicious mods. On the official download page, select the standalone option deliberately rather than assuming the most prominent download button is the one you want.
Privacy and ads are separate considerations
Overwolf’s privacy options documentation describes controls for categories including system and performance information, CPU and GPU details, FPS, ping, crashes, apps and games used, video-capture preferences, experiments, and customization data. Its GDPR/CCPA installation guidance discusses consent for ad-related data in applicable jurisdictions.

These disclosures concern Overwolf-related privacy controls; they do not establish that the standalone app collects exactly the same data. If minimizing telemetry is important to you, review the current privacy policy and app settings rather than assuming standalone means no data collection. Advertising or telemetry concerns may affect whether you want the app, but they are not by themselves evidence that it is malware.

- Go directly to the official page. Use curseforge.com/download/app or the official CurseForge download site. Avoid file-hosting sites, download portals, shortened links, and unofficial “portable” or repackaged installers.
- Choose the intended build. On Windows, select Standalone if you want to avoid installing the Overwolf client. On Linux, CurseForge documents AppImage and Debian (
.deb) packages and officially supports Ubuntu distributions; see its Linux troubleshooting guide. - Check before running the installer. Confirm the download domain and scan the file with updated security software. A single antivirus detection can warrant investigation without proving malware; multiple independent detections, an unexpected publisher, or a mismatched download source are reasons not to proceed. No antivirus scanner or public scanning service can certify a file as safe.
- Pay attention during setup. If you selected standalone, pause if the installer unexpectedly asks to install Overwolf. Be wary of unrelated bundled software, unexpected browser extensions, or prompts that do not fit the installation.
- Keep backups and update carefully. Do not disable antivirus to make an installation work. Back up saves and profiles before major modpack changes, and avoid running unknown mods on a computer that holds sensitive work or personal data.
For Minecraft, CurseForge lists these default modding folders: Windows C:Users[user]curseforgeminecraft, macOS /Users/[user]/Documents/curseforge/minecraft/, and Linux /home/[user]/Documents/curseforge/minecraft. Backing up the relevant profile or save data before a major update makes recovery easier.

If antivirus flags the installer or a mod
Do not automatically whitelist the file just because it appears to come from CurseForge. First confirm where you downloaded it and whether the detection is isolated or repeated by other security tools. If the source or publisher looks wrong, do not run it; delete the file, obtain a fresh copy from the official page, and scan again. A public scanning service can provide additional signals, but it cannot conclusively certify a file, and uploading a file may expose its hash or metadata.
If you already ran a file and have evidence of compromise, disconnect from the internet, close the game and launcher, and quarantine or remove the suspicious file. Run a full scan with updated security software. From a separate trusted device, change potentially exposed passwords, revoke active sessions, and review multifactor-authentication settings. Check for unexpected browser extensions, startup programs, scheduled tasks, or recently modified files, then restore saves or profiles from a known-good backup.
If the issue appears related to CurseForge itself, contact its support team with logs. The app has a Create logs zip option under the question-mark/help menu; on Windows, standalone logs are also under %AppData%CurseForge, including the agent and logs folders. See CurseForge’s log instructions.
Should you use CurseForge or an alternative?
CurseForge Standalone is a good fit if you want CurseForge’s catalog, integrated modpack installation, and updates, and accept its account, advertising, and moderation model. It may be a poor fit if you want minimal launcher software, prefer manual control, or want a different project repository. A different launcher changes the workflow and source ecosystem; it does not eliminate the need to evaluate mods.
- Modrinth App is an alternative launcher and project ecosystem, especially for Minecraft. It is not automatically malware-proof; it also distributes third-party projects.
- Prism Launcher offers Minecraft instance management and more direct control over separate installations, loaders, and profiles, at the cost of more hands-on setup for some users.
- ATLauncher is another Minecraft launcher and modpack option; its fit depends on the packs and workflow you use.
None of these alternatives should be treated as a guarantee that every mod is safe. Choose based on the projects you need, the control you want, and the amount of manual management you are comfortable with—not on an assumption that another launcher removes supply-chain risk.
