Yes. Blender is free, open-source software, and you can use its core desktop features offline after downloading it. You will need an internet connection to get Blender initially and to download updates, extensions, or online assets. Some third-party add-ons also require online access or license checks.
Is Blender really free?
The Blender application is free to download and use, with no required subscription. It is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL), which also gives users freedoms to study, modify, and redistribute the software. Blender can be used for personal, educational, freelance, and commercial work.
The application’s license does not automatically cover everything you use with it. Models, textures, fonts, HDRIs, add-ons, and other project materials have their own terms. Paid add-ons, asset libraries, training, and cloud-rendering services are optional and separate from Blender itself. The Blender Manual explains the distinction between Blender’s license and artwork made with it.
Does Blender work without an internet connection?
Once installed or extracted, Blender’s core work can be done locally. That includes modeling, sculpting, UV editing, rigging, animation, Geometry Nodes, texturing with local files, compositing, video editing, Python scripting, and rendering with Eevee or Cycles. You can open and save local .blend files without being online.

The Blender project says its portable version can run without installation or an internet connection. Its production documentation also says Blender does not access the internet by default, although online access can be enabled. See the official system requirements and deployment documentation.

Blender itself being offline-capable does not mean every add-on or asset is. Check the add-on maker’s documentation for offline activation, dependencies, and compatibility with your Blender version.
How to prepare Blender for offline use
- Download Blender from the official Blender website while you have internet access. Avoid unofficial download mirrors.
- Select the build for your operating system and processor architecture. Windows x64, Windows ARM, macOS Apple Silicon, and Linux builds are not interchangeable.
- Choose a regular installer where available, or a portable archive if you want to run Blender from an extracted folder or USB drive.
- Install or extract it while online. Keep a copy of the installer or archive and note the Blender version used for the project.
- Download and install any required add-ons or extensions. Copy local assets, textures, HDRIs, fonts, reference images, documentation, and tutorials you will need.
- Disconnect from the internet and test the setup: launch Blender, open a representative project, check its external files and add-ons, and render a test frame.
For project portability, keep the .blend file together with its needed assets and caches. Pack files into the project where appropriate, or use documented relative paths. Missing textures are commonly a local file-path or packaging problem—not evidence that Blender requires internet access.

How to enable Blender’s offline mode
For a controlled workstation, Blender documents this command-line option:
blender --offline-modeIt prevents users from enabling Blender’s online access in its preferences. The preference is under Preferences → System → Network → Allow Online Access in the documented interface; labels or placement can change between Blender versions. See the Blender 4.5 System preferences documentation.
This is not a universal network firewall. Blender warns that third-party add-ons may not respect its offline setting. If the goal is security or guaranteed network isolation—not simply avoiding Blender’s online features—use operating-system or network-level controls as well.

Is the portable version genuinely portable?
Yes: Blender can be extracted to a folder or run from a USB drive without a conventional installation. The portable package can make it easier to carry a particular Blender build or keep several versions side by side. It does not automatically carry everything a project needs, however. Add-ons, asset-library paths, preferences, caches, operating-system permissions, and graphics drivers can still be separate. A USB drive may also be slower than an internal SSD.
Test the same portable folder on the target computer before relying on it. A different CPU architecture, unsupported operating system, missing GPU driver, or insufficient memory can prevent it from working properly. Portability does not bypass those requirements.

Blender lists x64 and arm64 support. Its requirements page also recommends a 1,920 × 1,080 display and a three-button mouse, though a two-button mouse or trackpad can work. Minimum specifications indicate what may run, not what will feel comfortable: complex scenes, high-resolution sculpting, simulations, and GPU rendering can need substantially more resources. Graphics drivers still matter offline, so obtain compatible drivers in advance if the computer cannot connect.

If a computer does not meet the current requirements, Blender keeps previous releases available on its previous versions page. Older releases may support older graphics APIs—for example, the requirements page cites Blender 3.6 with OpenGL 3.3 and Blender 2.79 with OpenGL 2.1. Treat those as compatibility examples, not recommendations: older software may lack current features, fixes, extension compatibility, and support for newer project files.

Keep the project’s version documented, preserve its matching installer, and test add-ons separately for each version. Avoid casually opening and saving the only project copy in a newer release. Blender’s deployment documentation recommends sticking with one LTS version for a production project; check its current schedule for supported releases.

Who should choose Blender for offline work?
Blender is a good fit for students, travelers, schools, and studios that need a capable local 3D tool without a recurring application license. It also suits restricted or air-gapped workstations when the software, add-ons, assets, and drivers can be prepared and tested ahead of time.
It is a weaker fit if you expect automatic updates, instant access to online assets, cloud rendering, or every add-on to work without an account or license check. Blender Studio is a separate subscription service for training, assets, films, and production knowledge; it is not required to install or use Blender. If you rely on its materials, arrange access and download what you need in advance.
