An SSD is the better choice for The Sims 4 if you want shorter loading screens, especially with many expansion packs, mods, or custom-content files. An HDD can still run the game: EA’s published requirements specify free storage space, not an SSD. The key distinction is that an SSD can speed up file loading, but it usually will not meaningfully improve frame rate or fix slow simulation.

There is no universal number of seconds an SSD will save. Results depend on the drive and connection, the rest of the computer, the number of packs and files, background scanning or cloud syncing, and the amount of free space.
What an SSD improves—and what it does not
Where faster storage helps
The clearest benefit is time spent reading game files: starting the game, loading a household or lot, traveling between worlds, and accessing Build/Buy content. A large library of mods and custom content can mean more files for the game to handle, so placing both the active game and user data on an SSD is a sensible setup. This is practical guidance, not a guarantee of a particular loading-time reduction.
Why an SSD usually does not raise FPS
Frame rate and simulation speed depend much more on the CPU, GPU, RAM, graphics settings, and what the game is simulating. An SSD is not a substitute for a capable graphics card or processor, and it will not repair a broken mod. If the complaint is choppy camera movement, low FPS, or Sims taking too long to act, investigate those causes rather than buying a faster drive.

Is an HDD enough to run The Sims 4?
Yes. EA’s published PC and Mac requirements list storage capacity and other hardware, but do not require an SSD. For Windows, EA lists 64-bit Windows 10, at least 4 GB RAM and 25 GB free storage at minimum; its recommended configuration lists 8 GB RAM and 50 GB free storage. EA also asks for additional room for custom content and saved games. These are stated requirements, not a guarantee that a heavily expanded installation will fit in that space.
An HDD is a reasonable choice if it is healthy, has room, and your loading times are acceptable—particularly for a lightly modded game. It is a less appealing active-game drive if it is nearly full, old, externally connected through a slow interface, or busy running the operating system and other applications at the same time. Players with many packs or a large custom-content library are more likely to notice the benefit of moving to an SSD.

Where should the game and Sims 4 files go?
The installed game and packs are separate from your personal Sims 4 data. The EA App or Steam stores the program files where the game is installed. On Windows, user data normally lives at DocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 4; that folder can contain saves, Tray files, Mods, screenshots, and videos. EA community guidance explains this separation and notes that moving the game installation does not automatically move saves and mods: EA Forums: game files on an HDD.
For the best storage setup, keep the active game and, if practical, the user-data folder on an internal SSD. Moving only the program files can still help, but a large Mods folder left on a slow HDD may remain a source of loading delays. The folder location itself is not an EA-certified performance guarantee; it is a practical way to put frequently read files on faster storage.

Do not simply drag the user-data folder to another drive and assume the game will follow it. The game normally looks in Documents; if it cannot find the old folder, it may create a new, apparently empty one. Advanced Windows users can redirect the folder with a junction or other supported folder-redirection method, but should back up first and verify the result. Keep the program and user-data folders distinct. If Documents is redirected to OneDrive or another sync service, moving or linking the folder can also create duplicate folders or sync conflicts. Which SSD should you choose?
SATA SSD
A SATA SSD is often the practical budget upgrade for an older desktop or laptop that has a compatible 2.5-inch drive bay. Check the computer’s supported drive type and physical space before buying; a SATA drive will not fit every system.

NVMe SSD
An NVMe SSD is appropriate when the computer has a compatible M.2 slot. It is faster on paper than SATA, but for The Sims 4 the jump from an HDD to an SSD is generally more important than paying extra to move from a good SATA SSD to a premium NVMe model. That is a practical inference from the game’s file-loading workload, not a controlled benchmark comparison.

An external SSD can help when internal storage cannot be upgraded, including on some laptops and Macs. Its actual performance depends on the port, enclosure, cable, and drive stability; a slow USB connection or unreliable hub can bottleneck it. Keep it connected while playing. An internal SSD is the simpler default for active game files. EA community guidance also cautions that an external connection may limit performance: EA’s storage-location guide.

How much storage do you need?
Use EA’s stated 25 GB minimum and 50 GB recommended free-space figures as a baseline, not as a realistic ceiling for every installation. The requirements also call for additional space for saves and custom content. In an EA community guide, the installed program files were described as approaching 70 GB with the packs available at the time; that is a time-specific community estimate, not a permanent official requirement. Saves, mods, and custom content vary by player.
Leave practical room for the operating system, updates, other games, and the files you add over time. A 500 GB SSD can suit a tight budget or a computer mainly used for The Sims 4; 1 TB offers more breathing room, while 2 TB is more comfortable for extensive packs, custom content, and other games. These are planning suggestions, not EA capacity requirements. If choosing between a larger mainstream SSD and a much more expensive model bought for headline speed, capacity is usually the more useful priority.
Choose the upgrade that matches the problem
- Choose an SSD if long loading screens are the problem, your game runs from an HDD, or you have a large library of active content.
- Keep the HDD if it is healthy, you have little custom content, and you are satisfied with loading times. An HDD is also useful for backups and files you rarely access.
- Look at RAM, CPU, GPU, and settings if the main issue is low FPS, choppy movement, or slow simulation. EA recommends 8 GB RAM for its Windows configuration, but more RAM is not automatically the answer if another component is the bottleneck.
- Check mods and game files if errors, freezes, or missing content began after adding custom content or an update. Faster storage cannot make incompatible content work.
Before replacing a drive, confirm that the computer meets EA’s current system requirements and that the proposed SSD matches its connection and physical slot. Mac upgradeability varies by model; many modern Macs do not allow internal storage upgrades.

Move the game without losing saves or mods
- Back up the user data. Close The Sims 4 and its launcher. Copy the entire
DocumentsElectronic ArtsThe Sims 4folder somewhere safe, includingsaves,Tray,Mods, screenshots, and videos. Do not delete the original yet. - Move the program installation through its launcher. In the EA App, choose a new install location when installing; if the current app offers a Move option in its storage settings, use the launcher rather than dragging the game folder manually. Interface labels can change. For Steam, use Steam’s library-management tools.
- Leave user data in its expected place unless you are deliberately redirecting it. Changing the game-install location does not move Documents data. If you need to relocate that folder, use a documented folder-redirection method and test with a backed-up copy first.
- Test before removing the old copy. Launch the game, confirm existing saves appear, check that mods and custom content are enabled, load a test household, and verify that Library or Gallery content is present. Use the launcher’s repair or verify function if it reports damaged or missing program files.
What to check if the move does not help
- Loading is still slow: Check whether the Mods folder remains on the HDD, the external connection is slow, the drive is nearly full, or antivirus or cloud-sync software is scanning files. CPU or RAM limits and script mods can also affect startup.
- A blank save folder appears: Exit the game and launcher, restore the backup to the expected Documents location, and verify that saves return before attempting redirection again.
- Mods disappear: Confirm the folder is in the expected user-data path, the copy completed, and the game’s custom-content and script-mod options are enabled. Test without mods if needed to distinguish a path problem from incompatible content.
- The game will not launch: Confirm that the launcher recognizes the installation, the drive is connected and accessible, and permissions are correct. Repair or verify the installation before deleting old files.
- FPS or simulation remains poor: Storage is unlikely to be the fix; check graphics settings, CPU/GPU load, RAM, and mod compatibility instead.
