Normal iPhone use is not known to permanently damage healthy eyes. Long, uninterrupted close-up viewing can, however, cause temporary digital eye strain—such as dryness, tired eyes, headaches or blurred vision—and bright screen use late at night may interfere with sleep. The useful first steps are better viewing habits and display adjustments, not buying “eye-protection” glasses.
What “bad for your eyes” can mean
| Concern | What is established |
|---|---|
| Permanent retinal damage | Ordinary iPhone viewing has not been established as a cause of permanent retinal injury in healthy eyes. The American Academy of Ophthalmology’s EyeWiki says there is no scientific evidence that light from computer screens damages the eyes: Computer Vision Syndrome / Digital Eye Strain. |
| Dryness, tired eyes or discomfort | These are recognized symptoms of digital eye strain after prolonged device use. Symptoms generally ease with rest, though recurring discomfort may have another or additional cause. |
| Blurred vision or headaches | They can occur during or after extended near work. A prescription issue, dry eye, migraine or other condition can also contribute. |
| Sleep disruption | Bright, blue-rich light in the evening may affect circadian timing or make sleep harder. That is different from evidence of retinal damage. |
| Myopia in children | Near-work habits and time outdoors are relevant to children’s eye health, but an iPhone alone has not been established as the cause of nearsightedness. |
Why an iPhone session can cause eye strain
Digital eye strain, also called computer vision syndrome, can follow sustained use of phones as well as computers. It describes symptoms associated with visual tasks; it does not mean the screen has injured the eye. The American Optometric Association and the American Academy of Ophthalmology describe digital-device-related symptoms and contributing factors (AOA guidance; AAO EyeWiki).
- Less or incomplete blinking: Concentrating on text or a game can reduce blinking, allowing the tear film to evaporate and the eyes to feel dry or gritty.
- Prolonged near focus: The eyes keep focusing at a short distance, while both eyes converge inward. A phone is often held closer than a desktop display.
- Glare and reflections: Reflections can make text harder to see and increase visual effort.
- Brightness mismatch: A bright screen in a dark room, or a dim screen in bright surroundings, may feel uncomfortable.
- Small text and posture: Squinting, leaning toward the screen or holding the neck in one position can add eye, head, neck or shoulder discomfort.
- Other contributors: Dry air, contact lenses, dry eye, light sensitivity and an uncorrected prescription can make symptoms more noticeable.
A 2022 review describes digital eye strain as a combination of symptoms and contributing visual demands, rather than evidence of a single screen-caused injury: Digital Eye Strain—A Comprehensive Review.

Does iPhone blue light damage the retina?
Typical consumer phone exposure has not been shown to damage the human retina. Findings from experiments using intense, concentrated light should not be treated as proof that ordinary phone viewing causes the same harm. The AAO’s screen guidance does not recommend special eyewear solely to protect eyes from computer-screen light (AAO EyeWiki).

Do blue-light glasses reduce screen strain?
They are not a proven fix for ordinary digital eye strain. A Cochrane review published August 18, 2023, included 17 randomized controlled trials; its evidence, searched through March 22, 2022, found blue-light-filtering lenses probably make little or no short-term difference to computer-related eye strain and found no evidence that they protect the retina. Sleep effects were uncertain (Cochrane review; Cochrane summary).
Can screen light affect sleep?
Bright, blue-rich light in the evening can influence circadian signaling and may make it harder to fall asleep. Consider reducing brightness and winding down without stimulating screen use before bed. This sleep concern does not show that an iPhone has injured the retina.
Which iPhone settings can make viewing more comfortable?
Settings are comfort tools, not treatments for eye disease. Menu labels and availability may vary somewhat by iOS version, language and iPhone model. Apple’s current guidance for display controls is at Adjust brightness and color temperature.

Match brightness to the room
Adjust brightness so the display is comfortable in the surrounding light; avoid using maximum brightness in a dark room or making it so dim that you strain to read.
- Control Center: Drag the brightness slider.
- Settings: Open Settings → Display & Brightness and adjust the brightness control.
- Auto-Brightness: Open Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Auto-Brightness.
Try Night Shift for evening comfort
Night Shift shifts display colors toward warmer tones. It may feel less harsh at night, but it is not proven retinal protection and does not replace breaks or sleep habits.
- Open Settings → Display & Brightness → Night Shift.
- Turn on Scheduled, then select Sunset to Sunrise or choose a custom schedule. Adjust Color Temperature if you prefer.
You can also touch and hold the brightness control in Control Center to access Night Shift. Consult Apple’s Night Shift instructions and iPhone display guide for version-specific details.

Use Dark Mode, True Tone or Reduce White Point if they help
- Dark Mode changes the interface to a darker color scheme. It may feel more comfortable in dim surroundings, but readability depends on the task, contrast, text size and personal preference.
- True Tone adjusts display color and intensity to match ambient conditions; it aims for a more natural appearance, not prevention of eye disease.
- Reduce White Point tones down the intensity of bright colors. Find it under Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Reduce White Point. Apple notes that settings can vary by iOS release: Display colors and Reduce White Point.
Consider Display Pulse Smoothing only if low-brightness flicker bothers you
Some iPhones use pulse-width modulation (PWM) to control brightness, and some people may notice flicker when the display is dim. Where available, Apple’s Display Pulse Smoothing accessibility option is intended to provide smoother dimming at low brightness. It can affect low-brightness performance. Treat it as a comfort setting, not an eye-health safeguard; symptoms alone cannot diagnose PWM sensitivity. The setting is documented in Apple’s iPhone display guide.

Distance, breaks and other habits that help
Hold the phone farther away and enlarge the text
Avoid bringing the phone close to your face to read. The AOA gives approximately 13–20 inches as general viewing-distance guidance for small devices such as smartphones, tablets and laptops (AOA screen-time guidance). This is a practical range, not a medical minimum for every person. Increase text size instead of moving the screen closer.
Use Screen Distance as a reminder
Apple’s Screen Distance feature uses the TrueDepth camera to detect when a supported iPhone or iPad has been held closer than 12 inches for an extended period. It puts an alert over the screen until the device is moved farther away or the user taps Continue. It is available on devices with a TrueDepth camera and iOS 17 or later; it is a prompt for healthier viewing habits, not a proven way to prevent myopia.

Apple says it is on by default for children under 13 in a Family Sharing group, though the age threshold may vary by country or region. See Set up Screen Distance for compatibility details.
Take breaks and blink
Try the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something about 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Also blink deliberately and take longer breaks during extended reading or gaming. This is a practical way to ease visual effort, not a guarantee against myopia or eye disease (AOA guidance; AAO EyeWiki).

- Change your position or lighting to reduce glare on the screen.
- Increase text size and use comfortable contrast rather than squinting.
- Use enough room light to avoid a bright display standing out in an otherwise dark room.
- During long sessions, pause rather than relying on a filter or accessory to compensate for uninterrupted close viewing.
Children, phones and myopia
Children may hold devices close or spend long stretches doing near work, but current pediatric guidance does not establish an iPhone alone as the cause of myopia. Near-work patterns, time outdoors and other factors matter; the American Academy of Pediatrics and AAPOS discuss these issues without making a phone-only causal claim (screen time and children’s eyes; myopia in children and teens; AAPOS myopia guidance).

Encourage children to avoid very close viewing, take breaks and spend time outdoors. Screen Distance can remind a child to move a device farther away, but it does not manage total screen time, sleep, outdoor activity or content. A child who squints, holds devices unusually close or has trouble seeing at a distance should have their vision assessed.
Can using an iPhone in the dark cause blindness?
Ordinary use in a dark room is not known to cause permanent blindness. Rare reports describe transient smartphone blindness: temporary, usually painless vision loss after one eye has adapted to darkness while the other is exposed to a bright phone screen—for example, while someone lies on one side. Vision typically returns as the eyes readapt. This uncommon effect is not evidence of permanent screen damage. See AAO EyeWiki’s overview.
When should you get an eye examination?
Do not assume every symptom is screen strain. Arrange professional evaluation for persistent blurred vision after putting the phone away, recurring headaches or eye pain, double vision, significant redness, discharge or light sensitivity, or symptoms that affect reading, work or driving. An eye-care professional can check for issues such as an outdated prescription or dry eye.
Seek prompt medical care for sudden vision loss or new flashes, many floaters, or a curtain or shadow in your vision. Sudden, persistent, painful or one-sided vision changes should not be attributed to screen use without evaluation.
