Taxpayers filing a 2025 federal return can still file free through IRS Free File, Free File Fillable Forms, VITA, TCE, or MilTax, depending on income, experience, and eligibility. Start at IRS.gov/freefile, rather than a provider’s ordinary commercial website, so you see the IRS-sponsored offer and its actual conditions.
What happened to IRS Direct File?
Direct File was an IRS-operated online filing experience for eligible taxpayers in participating states. It guided users through a federal return and, in some states, connected them with state filing options. It was offered for 2024 returns filed in 2025, but IRS officials told participating state tax administrators that it would not be available for Filing Season 2026, according to Associated Press reporting.
This does not mean the IRS stopped offering free electronic filing. The replacement choices are different programs:
- Direct File: an IRS-operated interview-style filing tool.
- IRS Free File: an IRS gateway to participating private tax-software companies and IRS fillable forms.
- Free File Fillable Forms: electronic versions of IRS forms for people who can prepare their own return.
For clarity, the return being filed now is the 2025 tax-year return, filed during the 2026 filing season.

IRS Free File Guided Tax Software
For Filing Season 2026, the IRS says taxpayers with 2025 adjusted gross income (AGI) of $89,000 or less can find a free guided federal-filing offer. That figure is an eligibility ceiling for the program, not a guarantee that every provider accepts every taxpayer under it. Providers can add restrictions based on age, state, military status, income, or tax forms.

VITA and TCE
Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) generally serves qualifying low- and moderate-income taxpayers, people with disabilities, and taxpayers with limited English proficiency. Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) focuses mainly on people age 60 and older. Use the IRS locator for current sites and schedules; local services are not uniform.
MilTax
Eligible members of the military community can use MilTax through Military OneSource. It is designed for qualifying service members and military households and may handle military-specific situations more appropriately than a general consumer product.

Free File Fillable Forms are electronic IRS forms, not a full question-and-answer tax interview. They can suit someone whose income exceeds the guided-software limit and who understands which forms and schedules apply. They are a poor substitute for Direct File if you are unsure whether you need Schedule C, Schedule D, Form 8889, itemized deductions, or another schedule.

Commercial alternatives worth comparing
FreeTaxUSA
FreeTaxUSA advertises free federal returns. Its pricing page observed in August 2026 listed state returns at $15.99, with optional Deluxe Support at $7.99, Pro Support at $64.99, and Audit Defense at $19.99. These are time-sensitive commercial prices, not IRS program terms.
It can be useful when you need broad federal form support and a clearly stated low-cost state option. It is less suitable if you require free state filing, extensive professional advice, or a highly guided beginner interface. Its ordinary site is not automatically the same as its IRS Free File offer.
Cash App Taxes
Cash App Taxes advertises $0 federal and state filing for all users, including many returns with deductions, investments, and digital assets. That is the provider’s current claim; verify supported forms and terms before filing. You need Cash App access to log in, which may not suit taxpayers who do not want a financial-services account connected to their tax filing.

TaxSlayer
TaxSlayer’s Simply Free product is limited to Form 1040 and specified credits, with eligibility restrictions. Its ordinary product pricing can differ from an IRS Free File offer reached through IRS.gov. Do not assume the basic free tier covers self-employment, investments, itemized deductions, or other non-basic forms.
TurboTax and H&R Block
TurboTax and H&R Block remain options for familiar interfaces, importing, paid expert help, or in-person assistance. They are not among the eight providers listed in the IRS announcement for the 2026 Free File program. Their ordinary “free” editions should not be treated as the same thing as IRS Free File.
When a professional preparer is the safer choice
Consider a CPA, enrolled agent, or other qualified preparer for rental property, business income, foreign income or accounts, complex stock or digital-asset activity, multiple states, estate or trust issues, IRS notices, audits, or delinquent returns. A low-cost software tier is not automatically the safest or cheapest solution for a complicated return.
Why a federal free return may still cost money
Separate these prices before you submit:
- Federal preparation and e-file: may be free under IRS Free File or a provider’s own terms.
- State preparation and e-file: may be free, income-limited, discounted, or separately priced.
- Additional states: often cost extra when you moved or earned income in multiple states.
- Premium forms: Schedule C, investment sales, rental income, HSA information, and itemized deductions can trigger an upgrade.
- Add-ons: paid support, audit defense, refund-transfer services, and expedited options can raise the total.
If your state has its own free filing service, compare filing the state return directly through the state revenue department rather than paying a software fee.

- Instruction sheet/checklist and preprinted labels included
- 12 pockets plus one large pocket in back provides ample storage
- Protective flap and elastic cord closure

Forms and situations that commonly change the price
Self-employment
Check support for Form 1040, Schedule C, Schedule SE, business expenses, and estimated-tax calculations before entering data. These features frequently sit outside the simplest free tier.
Investments and digital assets
Ask whether the product supports Form 8949, Schedule D, brokerage imports, cryptocurrency transactions, and wash-sale reporting. “Free investment filing” claims can depend on the exact transactions and import method.
HSA, education, and itemized deductions
Health savings account reporting, education deductions, mortgage interest, charitable deductions, and other less-basic forms may require a paid level. Confirm support before you commit to a provider.
Prior-year and amended returns
IRS Free File generally targets the current filing season. Prior-year returns, amended federal returns, and state amendments can have separate rules and fees. Verify Form 1040-X support if you need to correct a filed return.

Deadlines, extensions, and payment
The regular deadline for a 2025 federal return was April 15, 2026. A taxpayer who properly requested an extension generally has until October 15, 2026 to file. The IRS explains filing and payment dates at IRS individual tax filing.
An extension postpones paperwork, not the tax payment. If you owed money, pay as much as possible by the original deadline to limit interest and penalties. State extension rules can be different. Anyone who did not request an extension should file as soon as possible.
Prepare before switching from Direct File
Direct File data should not be assumed to transfer automatically to a new provider. Gather your prior-year federal return, W-2 and 1099 forms, IRS notices, dependent information, bank details, and records supporting deductions and credits. You will also need a valid taxpayer identification number, usually a Social Security number or qualifying ITIN, and may have to complete identity verification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to avoid surprise charges
- Begin at IRS.gov/freefile when seeking an IRS-sponsored offer.
- Confirm whether the displayed price covers both federal and state returns.
- Check every required form, schedule, state, and amendment before entering extensive data.
- Watch for upgrades after adding self-employment, investments, HSA information, itemized deductions, or another state.
- Decline optional refund-transfer, audit-defense, or premium-support products unless you specifically want them.
- Review the final price immediately before e-file authorization.
Which path should you choose?
For a straightforward return and 2025 AGI of $89,000 or less, IRS Free File Guided Software is the closest practical replacement for the former Direct File experience. Use Fillable Forms only if you can work confidently from IRS instructions. Choose VITA or TCE for qualifying in-person help, and MilTax for eligible military households. Compare FreeTaxUSA or Cash App Taxes when commercial features, state pricing, or investment support matter. For genuinely complex returns, use a full-featured product or a professional preparer instead of assuming the cheapest advertised tier is adequate.
