If your iPhone opens a menu when you touch and hold an app instead of making the icons jiggle, app deletion probably has not stopped working. iOS 13 changed the long-press gesture: tap Remove App, then Delete App, and confirm. If Delete App is missing, check Screen Time and device-management restrictions before treating it as a software problem.
Delete an app from the Home Screen
- Find the app and touch and hold its icon.
- When the quick-action menu appears, tap Remove App.
- Tap Delete App, then confirm by tapping Delete.
On iOS 13, the first menu was a change from the older press-and-wait interaction many iPhone owners knew, especially those used to 3D Touch. It can look as though the familiar delete control has vanished, but the menu is a normal part of the updated gesture—not proof that iOS 13 disabled deletion. Apple’s current instructions use a similar flow, though labels can vary by iOS version. See Apple’s app deletion instructions.
Choose carefully: Delete App removes the app and its related local data from the iPhone. Remove from Home Screen only removes its icon from that page; the app stays installed and can be found in the App Library. Deleting an app does not cancel a subscription billed through it.

If you want the icons to jiggle
You can still enter Home Screen edit mode:
- Keep holding an app: Touch and hold its icon, ignore the quick-action menu, and continue holding until the icons move.
- Hold an empty area: Touch and hold an unoccupied part of the Home Screen until the icons move.
In edit mode, tap the app’s delete or minus control, then choose the deletion option and confirm. The control’s appearance and wording differ across iOS releases; you may see older “x” terminology in instructions for iOS 13 and newer Remove App wording on later versions.

If “Delete App” is missing
Work through these checks in order. A missing deletion choice is more often a restriction or a special app type than a gesture failure.
1. Allow app deletion in Screen Time
On an iOS 13-era iPhone, open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > iTunes & App Store Purchases > Deleting Apps and select Allow. Menu names may differ on newer iOS versions; Apple’s guide explains Screen Time restrictions.

Change only the deletion permission you need, rather than turning off all parental controls. A Screen Time passcode may be required. On a child’s iPhone, a parent or Family Sharing organizer may control the setting.

Some Apple apps have special deletion rules, and some cannot be deleted. The list has changed over time, so do not assume an old iOS 13 list applies to the current iPhone. Check Apple’s current app-removal guide for the installed iOS version. A third-party app would normally offer Delete App unless a restriction applies.

Removing some built-in apps can also affect related features. Apple’s documentation for iOS 12 and iOS 13, for example, noted effects involving Watch pairing, CarPlay, or Control Center for certain apps. Those historical examples are not a guarantee of how every later iOS release behaves; check Apple’s guidance for your version before removing a built-in app. See Apple’s built-in app information.
3. Look for a school or work management profile
Open Settings > General > VPN & Device Management and look for a management profile. An employer or school may prevent app removal or reinstall a managed app. Contact the organization’s IT administrator to ask about its policy. Do not remove a work or school profile casually: doing so can remove associated settings, apps, accounts, or data. Apple explains profiles and device management.

4. Check restriction or parental-control apps
Third-party apps can restrict app use or device changes. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance gives examples such as Screen Zen, Cape, Opal, Freedom, and Refocus; that is not a complete or permanent list. Swipe down from the middle of the Home Screen to open Spotlight, search for restriction or focus apps, and check their settings for app-deletion or device-lock controls. If the setting is unclear, contact the app’s developer. See Apple’s troubleshooting guidance.

If the app is no longer on a Home Screen page, swipe left past your pages to open the App Library. Find the app or use App Library search, touch and hold its icon, tap Delete App, and confirm. If you choose Remove from Home Screen elsewhere, the app remains available in the App Library.

Use iPhone Storage if Home Screen controls fail
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Tap the app.
- Tap Delete App, then confirm.
Do not confuse this with Offload App. Offloading removes the app but keeps its documents and data on the device so they can be restored if you reinstall it. Deleting removes the app and related local data. A Screen Time, management, or profile restriction may also block deletion in Settings, so this route is not a way around those controls. More detail is in Apple’s iPhone storage guidance.
Before you delete
- Local data: Deleting may remove documents, settings, and other data stored by the app on the iPhone. Data synced to an account or included in a backup may be recoverable, depending on the app and its policies; do not assume it will be.
- Subscriptions: Removing an app does not stop recurring billing. Cancel an unwanted subscription separately in Apple’s subscription-management controls.
- Managed apps: An organization may reinstall an app or require its presence. Ask the administrator rather than repeatedly deleting it.
- Built-in apps: Removing one may affect associated Apple features. Check the current guidance before proceeding.
If deletion still fails
After checking the restriction and management settings, restart the iPhone and install the latest iOS update compatible with it. Apple recommends updating as part of troubleshooting app deletion. Then try the iPhone Storage method again. If the delete control remains unavailable, or the phone has other software problems, contact Apple Support; a paid repair or factory reset is not a sensible first response to a missing app-delete option. Back up the iPhone before any broader troubleshooting that could affect data.
