If your iPhone’s Apple-logo progress bar is still moving, wait; after a restore or migration, Apple says it can remain on screen for more than an hour. If it has not moved for at least an hour, or the iPhone is looping at the Apple logo, try a force restart and then Recovery Mode. In Recovery Mode, choose Update first. Restore erases the iPhone’s data.
First, identify what is loading
“Loading screen” can mean an app has frozen, iOS cannot finish starting, or the iPhone is already in Recovery Mode. The right next step depends on what you see.

These are practical troubleshooting categories, not a definitive diagnosis. Apple’s guidance specifically addresses Apple-logo startup problems and Recovery Mode; a spinner inside an app can have a different cause. See Apple’s startup and Recovery Mode guidance.
How long should you wait?
There is no single timer for every loading screen. If the Apple logo and progress bar appeared after restoring from a backup or migrating from another iPhone, Apple says the screen may remain visible for more than an hour. If the bar has not moved for at least one hour, proceed to Recovery Mode. If it is moving, let it continue rather than restarting just because it is taking a while. Apple explains when to wait and when to use Recovery Mode.

A spinner inside an app is different: you do not need to wait an hour. If the app will not respond, try leaving it or closing it if possible. If the whole phone is frozen, force-restart it.
Force-restart the iPhone
A force restart does not use the on-screen controls and normally does not erase your data. It may, however, interrupt an update that is genuinely in progress and leave you needing Recovery Mode. Use the sequence for your model and hold the buttons until the Apple logo appears.
iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation or later)
- Press and quickly release Volume Up.
- Press and quickly release Volume Down.
- Press and hold the Side button.
- Keep holding until the Apple logo appears, then release.
iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus
- Press and hold the Side (or Sleep/Wake) button and Volume Down together.
- Keep holding until the Apple logo appears, then release.
iPhone 6s or earlier, including iPhone SE (1st generation)
- Press and hold the Home button and the Side or top button together.
- Keep holding until the Apple logo appears, then release.
If the iPhone starts, back it up promptly and check its available storage. If it returns to the same screen, avoid repeating the same restart indefinitely; move to Recovery Mode.

Use Recovery Mode—and try Update before Restore
Recovery Mode lets a computer attempt to reinstall or update iOS when the iPhone will not start normally. It is the next official software step after a force restart fails. You need a reliable USB cable and a Mac or PC. Keep the iPhone connected while entering Recovery Mode.
- Mac with macOS Catalina 10.15 or later: Open Finder.
- Windows: Open the Apple Devices app. iTunes may apply on older Windows setups.
- Mac with macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier: Open iTunes.
Connect the phone, then enter Recovery Mode. The button combination is similar to a force restart, but keep holding until the Connect to computer screen appears:
- iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation or later): Quickly press and release Volume Up, quickly press and release Volume Down, then hold the Side button.
- iPhone 7 or 7 Plus: Hold the Side (or top) button and Volume Down together.
- iPhone 6s or earlier, including iPhone SE (1st generation): Hold the Home button and the top or Side button together.
When Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes offers the choice, select Update first. Update attempts to reinstall or update iOS without the explicit erasure associated with Restore, but it is not a guarantee that the phone or its data can be recovered. If the download takes more than 15 minutes
If the computer is downloading iOS for more than 15 minutes, the iPhone may leave the Connect to computer screen. Let the download finish. Then repeat the Recovery Mode button sequence and choose Update again if prompted. Leaving that screen during a long download does not, by itself, mean the recovery has failed.
If the computer does not recognize the iPhone or the update fails, try a known-good cable and a different USB port; connect directly rather than through a hub. Make sure Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes is current, and check that the computer has enough free storage and a working internet connection. Record any displayed error code before trying again. Do not assume an error means Apple’s servers are down; check Apple’s system status if you suspect a service issue.
When is Restore a reasonable choice?
Restore is a last software option when Update fails and you are willing to erase the phone. It may be reasonable if you have a recent backup, your important data is already synced elsewhere, or you accept losing the local data to try to make the iPhone usable again. You can then set up the device and restore from a backup, if one is available.

If the phone contains irreplaceable data and you do not have a recent backup, do not choose Restore casually. Record the error, stop before erasing, and contact Apple or a reputable repair professional to discuss options. Recovery outcomes depend on the device’s condition and the available backup; no service can be assumed to recover data from a damaged or inaccessible iPhone.

A frozen Apple logo is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Possible causes include an interrupted or corrupted iOS update, a migration or backup restore that did not complete, critically low storage, or a repeated boot loop. Physical problems—including liquid exposure, impact, bending, electrical damage, or a faulty button—can also prevent normal startup. iFixit’s troubleshooting overview discusses software, storage, and logic-board possibilities.

None proves the cause. A logo freeze alone does not prove that storage is full, the battery is defective, or a particular iOS release is at fault.

If you had a low-storage warning but the iPhone boots after a restart, back it up first, then go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage and remove files or apps you no longer need. If the phone will not boot, you may not be able to free space through Settings; avoid treating Restore as a harmless way to clear storage, because it erases local data.
When to stop troubleshooting and get service
Contact Apple Support or a qualified repair provider if Recovery Mode cannot update the phone, the computer never recognizes it after you have checked the cable and port, a required button is broken or stuck, the phone repeatedly boot-loops, or there is evidence of physical or liquid damage. Repeated attempts are unlikely to fix a hardware fault and can complicate a data-preservation decision. Repair or replacement options and costs depend on the model, region, coverage, and damage.
If preserving data matters more than getting the phone working quickly, say so before authorizing an erase, replacement, or repair. Avoid relying on third-party software claims that promise “no data loss”; those claims are not a guarantee.

After the iPhone starts
- Back it up immediately to iCloud or a computer before making other changes.
- Check Settings > General > iPhone Storage and free space if it is nearly full.
- Note what happened just before the failure: update, migration, restore, low-storage warning, drop, or liquid exposure.
- After confirming a backup, check for a pending iOS update and install it if appropriate.
- If the issue returns, photograph the screen and record any computer error code before another recovery attempt.
